OH Leese! That's the time! As in 25 minutes to 4:00! LOL!
I don't know what it means, must be the time Pete Cetera wrote it!
And most appropriate the first post should be about Chicago, since Questions 67 & 68 is by them!

Well, I've asked myself before if it had to do with time, but I still don't get it? 25 OR 6 to 4:00....which is it?

Somebody, ANYBODY, please explain what this Chicago tune is about..........What the heck is 25 or 6 to 4? Hey Lisa. I've wondered about that myself for many years, but never tried to find out. Apparently, a lot of other people have wondered also. Anyway, I did I google search and gottons of hits. Here's one: "Reference your question, the Chicago song is a description of an ACID trip. The "manic" and confused music style here actually is a reasonable approximation of the experience! The "25 or 6 to 4" line is actually "25 or 624", referring to two types of LSD available at the time, based on their chemical composition. They were LSD-25 and LSD-624. I was there; good thing my kids don't ask me about those days......" I picked that up by searching on +"25 or 6 to 4" +explanation
If that has any basis in reality or not, I haven't a clue. Although I was of age in the 60s I never did acid.

The lyrics (other than the title) fit nicely with the idea that the song's about not being able to write ( a song? a novel?), and it's killing the singer. I don't know what the title would mean. LSD is also known as LSD-25; there's no LSD-624 or any other number but 25.
I suppose the title could refer to time, but people don't talk that way, really. You might say 25 to 4, or 20 or 30 to 4, but not so specific as one minute or the other (if you were that specific, you'd just say 25 to 4).

Just to throw my 2 cents on the table... I heard an interview with Cetera once and he said that the song was inspired by a night where everyone in the band was tripping on acid and he had a particular bout of writer's block. He decided to just write a song about not be able to write a song...or something like that.
Anyway, the most important thing is that it has a kickin' horn section!

Somebody, ANYBODY, please explain what this Chicago tune is about..........What the heck is 25 or 6 to 4? According to Casey Kasem sometime back in the 80's: It's shorthand for 25 or 26 (6) minutes before 4 o'clock. CASE CLOSED!

It IS a song about writer's block...but Robert Lamm wrote the song...Cetera mere;y sings it (and sings it very well!)

Anyway, the most important thing is that it has a kickin' horn section! Don't forget the kick-@$$ guitar solo! ;D As an aside, when I was still working at our neighborhood Burger King a few years back, I had a co-worker who was one of those "if-it's-not-gospel-it's-trash" types, and he and I were going at it for about twenty minutes--he swore up and down that "it's about LSD" and even stated that the members were still using drugs. I mean, the remaining original members have been upfront about their past drug use, but I highly doubt they're still doing them. Oh, and "Their guitarist killed himself." Like I'm gonna run off and blow my brains out because he did? It was definitely one of those "quit while you're behind" moments...
