I've been thinking about that myself. My biggest problem is that I can never get a good SOUND out of my equipment. I'm not a bad player (not a great one, either), but I'd improve a lot more if I could sound better, because I'd be willing to practice more. Right now, I have a Squier Stratocaster (plan on getting something better when funds allow), a solid state Fender twin reverb amp, and a Zoom multi-effects pedal (can't remember the exact name). I've played around with the settings to no end, and EVERYTHING that comes out of it sounds like Kurt Cobain! I want a good clean hard rock/metal sound, not that garbage...
As for instructional videos, the only one I've ever watched was years ago, done by Brian May of Queen. He personally showed how to play his solos and licks. So after watching the video, I could play Queen songs, but that was about it...

I haven't bought any guitar DVDs, but for anyone interested in learning keyboards, I'd highly recommend the Piano for Life series. These are great for reviewing the basics and learning new techniques and chords without all the "Mary Had a Little Lamb" and "Blow the Man Down" tedium of some of the other methods.
