Ok, usually certain types of music appeal to certain kinds of people. And with metal, if you listen to it, you're usually always a metal head.
But I think their were periods in the 80s where metal was "cool" so everyone was listening to it! Just like in the early 80s it was cool to dress like a burnout (feathered hair, black concert shirt, jean jacket) whether you were or not.
Well I definitely did. When I first was getting into music, I listened to my parents stuff like the Beatles, eventually moving onto the pop stuff of the day like Hall & Oates. But then like all teens, I moved onto music my parents would hate. In around 6th grade, me and all my buddies got into Van Halen, Def Leppard, Quiet Riot, Twisted Sister and Ratt. (Ok these bands are pretty tame by today's standards, but back then they were considered metal).
Eventually, I just moved onto classic rock: Journey, Petty, back to the Beatles, etc.
So did the rest of you have a METAL phase?

Oh, Yeah!!! Back in the mid-80's I was totally into metal. I still like to hear it again from time to time. In fact, lately I've been listening to a lot of old metal (or, at least what was considered metal back then).

Sure did! It was during my senior year of high school. Up until then, I had always listened to top 40 and country. But I had a boyfriend at the time who was into metal and southern rock, and his tastes rubbed off on me. I started getting into groups like Def Leppard, Ratt, Van Halen, Molly Hatchet, etc.
I still like some of that music, but like you, I eventually moved away from it somewhat and listened more to oldies and classic rock. That's still what I listen to mostly today.

What I was playing loud in the late 60's/early 70s (my teen years) was Doors, Led Zep, Hendrix, Grateful Dead, Steppenwolf, The Band, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Stone, Who, Humble Pie, Iron Butterfly, etc. Don't know if they are metal (pretty tame stuff for today) but my mother could never understand why I needed to blast the radio when I was sitting virtually right next to it.
It's funny that it was mentioned listening to "music are parents hate." I had always wondered what kind of parent I would be when my kids made that switch from kids records to developing their own musical tastes. While I've help my son become a dedicated classic rocker, my daughter remains stuck in top 40 land. While I don't dislike all the music of today, in my opinion, much of it isn't worth listening to.

I know you are on a Rush kick right now! But to me they were equal parts metal and prog. Yeah, they kind of eased into Prog as time went on. The first album (which Neil Peart did not play on) was straight ahead metal (at least by 1974 standards). They got less and less metal and more and more Prog as time went on. My guess is that if Peart hadn't came along, they wouldn't have lasted two more albums. Not that the first album was bad, it just lacked direction.

Oh boy, did I!!
I guess it started the summer between 8 and 9th grade, I started to hang out with my sister's boyfriends' sister (got that? LOL!), she was a couple of years older than me and all of her friends listened to Metal. I started to listen to AC/DC, Twisted Sister, Def Leppard, and a few others. The beginning of 9th grade I even dated a guy in a band!! My parents hated him!! I guess it was the long hair and leather jacket.
Of all the bands I listened to then, the only one I still like is AC/DC.

I had a bunch of musical phases, just as I had several phases during high school when I was trying to find a group to "fit in" with. Once I reached adulthood I just sort of merged all my musical tastes into one broad spectrum... early childhood to 4th grade: Pop 5th grade to 7th grade: Disco 8th and 9th grade: Pop (again) 10th grade: Rap (now known as Old School) 11th grade: Metal 12th grade: New Wave and Punk Once I got to college I finally realized that it's okay to be yourself and that it's also okay to enjoy many different types of music. My metal phase was brief and I certainly wasn't hardcore. I preferred bands like RATT, Motley Crue, Iron Maiden, Twisted Sister and The Scorpions over the heavier stuff. Speed metal I was never able to appreciate. There are finally some good metal-type bands appearing on the scene again. I especially like Disturbed ("Down With the Sickness") and Drowning Pool ("Let the Bodies Hit the Floor") and Metallica and Rob Zombie are consistently worthy of thrashing my head around like in the old days....only I don't have as much hair now to really pull off the effect

I, the Alpha Twin, do hereby confess, that I was a metal head. I also confess that I occasionally listen to it still. Thank you.

I loved that music then and I love it still. Unfortunately I didn't see many of those groups. The few I did see were W.A.S.P., Vinnie Vincent Invasion, Frehley's Comet, White Lion and Slaughter.

I don't think I went through a metal phase. I don't know...when I think of metal, I think of bands like, Quiet Riot, Ratt, Motley Crew (sp?), Twisted Sister and Iron Maiden. I didn't really like any of them, the one exception is Iron Maiden's "Run To The Hills", that's a good song!
But like bands like Journey, Def Leppard, Yes, Van Halen and Rush. Which I consider those rock bands.
What's the difference between metal and rock and roll?
