Good post, John!
Let's see...
Christina Aguilera-Possibly. Better than most of the other young chicks (
!!).
Tori Amos-Yes. Not much thought about, but I feel this lady does have potential.
Beyonce-With the way the entertainment industry treats today's "Music" scene, this would not shock me in the least, providing she'll still be on the charts in 2020. I can't count her out.
Sheryl Crow-Absolutely, without question.
Eminem-For a rapper, sadly, yes. But not before the Sugarhill Gang, Run DMC, the Beasties, and maybe a few others. But the Hall people certainly won't want that cheese like Hammer!
Jewel-YES. ABSOLUTELY. Can't say enough.
Dave Matthews-Unfortunately, yes, they'll make it not long after first nomination--2020?
Sarah McLachlan-You betcha! Too bad she's not had more albums; I like her style.
Alanis Morissette-Yeah, I guess. Paved the way for the more "radical" female singer/songwriter era that proliferated in the 2nd half of the 90's.
Nirvana (I know they're inactive, just thought I'd throw it out there)-A given. By 2016.
Red Hot Chili Peppers-yup. And their first album was in 1984, so they could make it in sooner than people think--2010 would not surprise me.
Britney Spears-
NO!!!! Just no. Golddigger.
Justin Timberlake-Actually, a
slightly better chance than Britney. But Christina will be in first, if anyone from that youth pack of today.
Robbie Williams-I know you like this singer, John, but he sadly hasn't had much impact in the states. If for some reason US critics can get a hold of his music and rate it positive, he could have a shot. Just
could. But he'll need to keep recording... If there's a UK pop music Hall of Fame, he'd go in MUCH easier.
Let me add some more:
R.E.M.-a given by 2006.
Boyz II Men-a welcome-back to the great, sweet soul sounds of the earlier 70's. Unstoppable from 1991-98. I hope they're in by 2020.
R. Kelly-One of the great singer/songwriter/producer/multi-instrumentalists around in recent years. A wider range of tunes in his repertoire than you might think. I think he'll be in by 2025.
Puff Daddy- (I will NOT call him by his current stage name--I HATE it)For a modern rapper, I feel he should stand as much of a chance as Eminem. Multi-talented through and through.
Mary J. Blige-Defined today's hip-hop soul urban sound that doesn't let up today, yet it seemed fresh for 1992. For female R & B performers hot on the chart today, the one with the best chance. Definitely by 2025.
Toni Braxton-a modern R & B diva, and I can honestly say she's not quite as conceited as Whitney. And won a well-deserved New Artist Grammy. Definitely by 2020.
En Vogue-The female equivalent of the Boyz. I can't say much else--incomparable, close harmony. Definitely in by 2020 or the world will be in trouble.
Babyface-Much the same as R. Kelly, but started a few years before. Hot property from 1988-98, and he's still recording. Should be considered by 2015.
Aaliyah-don't count this late songstress out. As much of an "original" recent female performer as Brandy and Monica.
Matchbox 20-As overrated as I think they are, I still feel they'll have quite a good shot, one of the better shots for a newer band. Definitely by 2030.
No Doubt-defined a retro sound for the 90's, and yet staying a fairly original outfit. Most definitely by 2025.
Will Smith "Fresh Prince"-all right, so some may say he's in the same "cheese club" as Hammer. But gave the world a no-nonsense stay-clean rapping style, many raps done in a brilliant story fashion. Got into a tougher style of rap at times, yet certainly not pushing the envelope. No wonder he's my and my mom's all-time fave rapper. I'm really crossing my fingers for him to be in by 2020!
Metallica-A given by 2010.
Pearl Jam-will get in on their first try, in 2016.
Can't think of any others right away...
Keep on rockin' in the free world!
