I back ordered an issue of Goldmine from February 11, 2000 that listed 25 artists that should be in the Hall. In the 4 years since, 5 acts have gone in! Pretty good! Thought I'd share the list here and my thoughts. So this is a sort of a Music Discussion. *NOTE* I am not listing other acts that I think should be in-that will be a separate post tomorrow. 1. America-I'd love it, but I don't see it happening. People accuse them of being a CSNY rip off. 2. Blood, Sweat & Tears-Again, I don't see it. Once Al Kooper left, I think they lost respect. 3. Chicago-Well we all know this one. Probably only the Moodies deserve it more. 4. Dave Clark Five-I think the argument is they wrote pop ditties that didn't say much. But there were many who thought they would give the Beatles a run for their money at first! 5. Neil Diamond-I'm not a big fan, so I'm not one to ask. Maybe as a writer?? 6. Donovan-I said this years ago. I realize he's not respected like say, Van Morrison, but he had a good string of unique psychedelic hits. 7. ELO-I'd love it. I think they deserve it. The argument would probably that they played "too much". 8. Guess Who-I think there is whole websites dedicated to getting them in. Probably even more up by you Ken. 9. Hall & Oates-They may do it. The number one duo in rock. 10. Jay & the Americans-They may go in late, like similar artists, like Gene Pitney. 11. Brenda Lee-Has since gone in. 12. Lovin' Spoonful-Has since gone in, I believe the first of the 5 on here. 13. Moody Blues-The article simply says, "Everyone but the Hall's electors seem to realize The Moody Blues should be inducted." That says it all. 14. Gene Pitney-Has since gone in. 15. Paul Revere & the Raiders-I said they should go in awhile ago. But their comedy may keep them out. 16. Righteous Brothers-They have since (FINALLY) gone in. 17. Johnny Rivers-Lots of people clammoring for him too. His covers may keep him out. 18. Linda Ronstadt-See Johnny Rivers. Wonderful voice though. 19. Todd Rundgren-I think the respect for him is more for his work with others. 20. Jack Scott-It said he was the inspiration for the article. I have never heard of him-never even seen his name before!! 21. Searchers-A good argument could be made for them, but not before the DC5. 22. Bob Seger-Just went in. 23. Ventures-Sure, talented musicians. 24. Dionne Warwick-The guy called this "the ultimate exclusion". Ok, she had lots of hits, but come on! There are way more to go in before her! 25. Mary Wells-I only know the one hit. So what do you think?

Great post, Adam!
1. America-They performed some very good music, but IMO they're a notch below Hall quality.
2. Blood, Sweat & Tears-They had that ONE great album....
3. Chicago- Absolutely deserve to go in! Really the LEADERS of one of the definitive sub-genres (there's a new word!) of pop/rock music of the last 40 years.
4. Dave Clark Five- Definitely not Hall material. A fairly talented B.I. band, but not at the top level. -- But I agree with you, Adam. I remember when back in the mid 60s, people thought they'd overtake the Beatles.
5. Neil Diamond- He did some good folk rock in his early days. But he has become a club singer. Is Tony Bennett in the Hall, how about Wayne Newton?
6. Donovan- Some definite talent, but a lower tier.
7. ELO- Wouldn't mind seeing them get in.
8. Guess Who- I kinda put them in the same category as America -- only I think they're better. If America gets in, The Guess Who should certainly get in.
9. Hall & Oates- They were OK, but I never saw what all the excitement was about.
10. Jay & the Americans- Why would they go in? Besides there were two different Jays.
11. Brenda Lee-Has since gone in. - and deservedly so.
12. Lovin' Spoonful-Has since gone in, - ditto
13. Moody Blues-Absolutely deserve it. Don't know why they haven't made it yet.
14. Gene Pitney - I still think he's underappreciated, even being IN the Hall.
15. Paul Revere & the Raiders-Good group, but I always thought them to be one dimensional.
16. Righteous Brothers-They have since (FINALLY) gone in. - Thank God!
17. Johnny Rivers- Good singer - but not of that calibre.
18. Linda Ronstadt- I can't see it at all.
19. Todd Rundgren- A fine talent, but it would be a shock to me if he ever made it.
20. Jack Scott- He's a country singer. Sounded like a poor man's Johnny Cash. Like his music, but the Hall? No.
21. Searchers- I think they were better than the DC5, but had no staying power.
22. Bob Seger-Just went in. - I can't see why.
23. Ventures- For several years they were the instrumental leaders. Why not?
24. Dionne Warwick- Great singer, but the wrong genre.
25. Mary Wells- maybe......

1. America-One of my favorite groups, but I can't say if they're Hall material or not.
2. Blood, Sweat & Tears-Put the Buckinghams in before these guys! THEY were the first group to do the horn section thing.
3. Chicago-Absolutely!
4. Dave Clark Five-No
5. Neil Diamond-He WAS the leader in the Singer-Songwriter movement of the early 70's.
6. Donovan-Maybe....
7. ELO-Why not? Like Chicago was with horns, they were with strings.
8. Guess Who-Absolutely!
9. Hall & Oates-Yeah, I can see it..
10. Jay & the Americans-No, I can't see it..
13. Moody Blues-They will eventually... They HAVE to!
14. Gene Pitney- ::Hiccup:: no....
15. Paul Revere & the Raiders-In a perfect world...
17. Johnny Rivers-Just like Three Dog Night, It's the cover stigma that's probably keeping him out.
18. Linda Ronstadt-She DID give a LOT of big musicians their start..
19. Todd Rundgren-One of the most deserving on this list IMO!
20. Jack Scott-You've got to be kidding!
21. Searchers-I'd like to see it, maybe one day..
23. Ventures-I've been saying this for YEARS! They influenced more guitar players than practically anybody in the pre-Hendrix years! First group to use effect pedals, too!
24. Dionne Warwick-Eh...
25. Mary Wells-Absolutely!

1. America-I'd love it too. I never understood the comparison to CSNY. I know they've been on the ballot in the past who knows what the years may bring.
2. Blood, Sweat & Tears- I think they deserve it personally. Al Kooper and David Clayton Thomas both deserve the recognition.
3. Chicago- A given. Seriously if they don't make it in the next couple of years something is wrong.
4. Dave Clark Five- This is one I don't see happening.
5. Neil Diamond- He should go in at least for songwriting like Carole King did.
6. Donovan- I have to say that I don't think he deserves it, at least not before a lot of other acts.
7. ELO-I'd love this too. It's quite possible we'll see them go in before the decade's out.
8. Guess Who- ditto.
9. Hall & Oates- I wouldn't be surprised at all about these two going in.
10. Jay & the Americans- Don't see them in
13. Moody Blues- Did Justin Hayward run over an Acadmey member's dog or something? I don't even really like this band all that much and I think they deserve to go in.
15. Paul Revere & the Raiders-I don't enough about them to comment on their chances.
17. Johnny Rivers- I don't think he'll go in but I've been surprised before.
18. Linda Ronstadt- her "cover song" reputation is going to keep her out.
19. Todd Rundgren- Absolutely deserves to go in. I know he's been on the ballot before.
20. Jack Scott- Country singer? I've heard the name.
21. Searchers-A good argument could be made for them, and I think they have a good chance.
23. Ventures- Hmmm, maybe. I think other groups deserve it more.
24. Dionne Warwick-I can think of about 25 other artists that deserve it more than her.
25. Mary Wells- see above. This is one of the artists that I was thinking of.

1.America - It would be great - and they did have some great tunes. 2.Blood Sweat and Tears - They had some great music and helped to pioneer the jazz/ rock genre along with Chicago , even though they didn't have the staying power Chicago had. It's a tough call though. 3.Chicago - Yup they deserve it . 4. The Dave Clark Five - They sure accomplished alot in their career - 18 or so appearances on Ed Sullivan (and not one of them are available on video or DVD(??), chart topping singles etc. Maybe one of these days. 5.Neil Diamond - His 60's / early 70's stuff was great. I'm actually quite suprised that he's not "in" as a songwriter. 6.Donovan - He had some great songs I agree but I can't see him going in very soon. 7.ELO - It sure would be nice - Jeff wrote some wonderful songs. It's hard to say really why one artist or group is inducted ahead of another. 8.Guess Who - Most definitely Up here they have recieved their share of awards for different accomplishments over the years. Honestly I'm suprised they aren't already in. 9.Hall and Oates - Yeah I can sort of see them going in. 10.Jay and The Americans - They had some good tunes - but I can't really see it. 11.Brenda Lee - Right on. 12.Lovin Spoonful - Woo Hoo! 13.The Moody Blues - They really do deserve it. 14.Gene Pitney I also think he's underappreciated. 15.Paul Revere / Raiders - I'm sure they'll make it in 16.Righteous Bros - It's amazing how long it takes them to induct some . 17.Johnny Rivers - I think him doing too many covers (although I like him) may hurt his chances. 18.Linda Ronstadt - I agree 19.Todd Rundgren - Very deserving 20.Jack Scott - Did he really have that much impact? 21.Searchers - I love these guys so much but like Johnny Rivers they build their career on outside writers so that could hurt them. 22.Bob Seger - I really like Bob alot but for some reason was stunned he went in. 23.Ventures - I can see it. 24.Dionne Warwick - Couldn''t agree more. 25.Mary Wells - The only tune I ever knew was My Guy - I can't really see her going in anytime soon.

America - I can see it. Great music, good chart success. Blood, Sweat, & Tears - Maybe not. Great band, great music, just didn't do anything after their first three hits. Chicago - Gotta wonder what the Rockhall is thinking by keeping these guys out. DC5 - I could see it. Again, Pretty good music, and pretty good chart success. Neil Diamond - Sorry, I like Neil. He belongs in the hall. Donovan - Merits consideration, but there are others who deserve induction before Donovan. ELO - Definately Guess Who - What else do they need to do? Hall & Oates - Great 10 year run of hits. Should get in. Jay & the Americans -Not sure they did enough to get into the hall. Moody Blues - A very glaring omission. Paul Revere & the Raiders - Never gave these guys much thought, but I guess they deserve consideration Johnny Rivers - I'm not sure we should keep someone out of the hall simply because they did a lot of covers. Quality of the music should count more. Rockhall quality music. Linda Ronstadt - See Johnny Rivers. Will probably get in before Johnny Rivers Todd Rundgren - Deserves to be in as a writer or contributor or something, but not as a singer Jack Scott - Who? Searchers - I don't know, probably not Ventures - IMO, the Ventures were one of the kings of the early 60s instrumentals. For that influence, they belong. Dionne Warwick - Despite the fact I'm not a fan, she does have a 20+ year chart history and some pretty good songs. Maybe another glaring omission. Mary Wells - maybe not
I'd like to add my personal glaring omission, the Fifth Dimension. Great music and successful chart history. Every bit deserving as say the Mamas & Papas. I somethimes wonder if not being cool by VH1 standards has anything to do with some artists being left off. Just an opinion.

1. America - I think they deserve it.
2. Blood, Sweat & Tears - Eh. Maybe someday, but not anytime soon.
3. Chicago - I'd say they'll go in within five years. Just a guess though.
4. Dave Clark Five - They made a big impact, but it's gonna take a while for them to get in too I think.
5. Neil Diamond - As a writer, definitely. As an artist, he annoys me so I would say a big NO there.
6. Donovan - He's got a really good shot at it.
7. ELO - They will definitely make it in.
8. Guess Who - Another definite.
9. Hall & Oates - I think they'll get in, although I'm not personally sure that they deserve it.
10. Jay & the Americans - No.
11. Brenda Lee - Deserved it!
12. Lovin' Spoonful - Also deserved their spot.
13. Moody Blues - Probably the closest to a sure thing on this list.
14. Gene Pitney - I don't see what the big deal is here...but he's already in so that's no longer an issue.
15. Paul Revere & the Raiders - They may get in.
16. Righteous Brothers - I can't believe how long they had to wait to get in!
17. Johnny Rivers - I don't think he deserves it.
18. Linda Ronstadt - A must!
19. Todd Rundgren - He should make it in eventually.
20. Jack Scott - Country, yet me nor Adam have heard of him? He's not going in.
21. Searchers - If they're extremely lucky...
22. Bob Seger - I knew he'd get in. I just didn't think it would be this soon!
23. Ventures - I don't think so.
24. Dionne Warwick - In the rock hall, no. Although she is majorly talented.
25. Mary Wells - I only know the one too.

1. America - I'd also love to see them in, but it will probably be quite a while, if ever.
2. Blood, Sweat & Tears- I can't really see them in there.
3. Chicago- Most definitely! They should have been in years ago.
4. Dave Clark Five- Good songs, but not Hall material.
5. Neil Diamond- I agree with him going in as a writer, possibly as a performer.
6. Donovan- I'd like to see him in eventually, after some other acts.
7. ELO- Absolutely!! The sooner, the better!
8. Guess Who- Yes, they should go in as well.
9. Hall & Oates- Another deserving act - they had an incredible string of hits.
10. Jay & the Americans-No
11. Brenda Lee-
12. Lovin' Spoonful-
13. Moody Blues-I couldn't agree more. Would love to see them in next year's class.
14. Gene Pitney-
15. Paul Revere & the Raiders-I think they should be in, but I can't really see it happening.
16. Righteous Brothers-
17. Johnny Rivers-Possibly in a few years - there are quite a few acts more deserving.
18. Linda Ronstadt-I'd like to see her in.
19. Todd Rundgren- Should be there as well.
20. Jack Scott-No, no, no.
21. Searchers-Good group, but not sure they're Hall worthy.
22. Bob Seger-
23. Ventures-Yes, they deserve a spot.
24. Dionne Warwick-No
25. Mary Wells-Good singer, but can't really see her in the Hall.
Another act not listed here that would be a good candidate for the Hall is Three Dog Night. It probably won't be for a while, if ever, but they definitely deserve a nod.

i. America-Good to see them there soon.
2. Blood, Sweat & Tears-Should go in soon.
3. Chicago-Agreed.
4. Dave Clark Five-Long overdue.
5. Neil Diamond-Just because he's had a great, long career, I feel he's worthy.
6. Donovan-I think he should go in.
7. ELO-Who wouldn't want them in here?!
8. Guess Who-If the Lovin' Spoonful's in, they should be too.
9. Hall & Oates-Would love to see them make it in, but U2 will be overwhelmingly in before them next year.
10. Jay & the Americans-Would be nice to see them in.
11. Brenda Lee-Good goin', girl!
12. Lovin' Spoonful-Love their music, maybe influential to some voters for their unique "jug band" rock sound.
13. Moody Blues-Truth be told, the electors always merely overlook them. They'd rather listen to REM and Run DMC.
14. Gene Pitney-Powerful 60's pop performer, well-deserved.
15. Paul Revere & the Raiders-If the Monkees are in, they should be in too.
16. Righteous Brothers-Can't knock their unique sound at least.
17. Johnny Rivers-Would love to see him there.
18. Linda Ronstadt-She better make it in soon.
19. Todd Rundgren-Really would LOVE to see him there.
20. Jack Scott-H2 may have already agreed, but he had a great, unique rockabilly-ballad sound. Very forgotten today, I feel time has taken its toll on him. "What in the world's" just gets better every listen, should be in my future top 2000 CRAZY list.
21. Searchers-Give or take. Same level as Gerry & the Pacemakers; lower-second tier of UK acts.
22. Bob Seger-Well-deserved; he is one of 3 "All-American rockers", along with Bruce and Mr. Mellencamp, my top pick of all.
23. Ventures-People don't realize their TREMENDOUS 60's LP output, yet they're mostly remakes. Still, a GREAT guitar sound that is wonderful and can't be overlooked.
24. Dionne Warwick-ROCK Hall of Fame? PLEASE! Neil WILL go in before HER!
25. Mary Wells-Overlooked Motown artist; could make it there.

[glow=red,2,300]1. America-they're pretty good. It'll be cool if they made it on.
2. Blood, Sweat & Tears-same with these guys.
3. Chicago-you mean they aren't in the Hall already?!? They really deserve to be.
4. Dave Clark Five-they're all right.
5. Neil Diamond-I like a lot of his songs, but I don't think I see it happening, especially as a writer.
6. Donovan-he did a pretty cool song and I can't remember what it was right at the moment.
7. ELO-I can't believe they aren't in either!
8. Guess Who-I'm not sure about this one.
9. Hall & Oates-They really should be in.
10. Jay & the Americans-Not really familiar with them.
11. Brenda Lee-I'm not really familliar with her either.
12. Lovin' Spoonful-That's good that they are in. They did some good stuff.
13. Moody Blues-they have really been slighted.
14. Gene Pitney-not familiar.
15. Paul Revere & the Raiders-they're all right. I guess they should be in.
16. Righteous Brothers-That's good that they are in. They've done a lot of good music.
17. Johnny Rivers-He should be in too.
18. Linda Ronstadt-Never was big on her. I don't really see her being in it.
19. Todd Rundgren-Not familiar.
20. Jack Scott-Not familiar.
21. Searchers-Not familiar.
22. Bob Seger-Not familiar.
23. Ventures-Never was big on them, but they should still be in.
24. Dionne Warwick-Yeah, I think I will agree with the guy.
25. Mary Wells-Not familiar.

There are only 4 performers I'd want to see in the HoF.
Donovan
Moody Blues
Ventures
Dionne Warwick
The HoF oughta be special, and not just put someone in cuz they had a song two you liked. I'd go beyond pure RnR though, because especially in the 60s, the charts were a really interesting mix of styles, and R&B and Motown were just as much a part of rock listening as rock itself.
Jack Scott was a country singer who had 2 or 3 crossover hits in the early 60s. He was on one of the PBS shows. He did "What in the World's Come Over You", and I think "Burning Bridges", and also "My Own True Love".

It irritates me to no end that Prince and some others went in before many (Most) of these! Shouldn't longevity count for anything? And yes I know that just becauses someone's around a long time, it doesn't automatically make them "good"--but sometimes they just are!
(But at least a Doo Wop group--The Dubs--went in this year. ;D)
*Note*: I'll try to reply "later" about the individual artists..

...especially in the 60s, the charts were a really interesting mix of styles, and R&B and Motown were just as much a part of rock listening as rock itself.. Exactly! And that's why we LOVED radio then! (And miss it now). Stylistically, music is SO segrated these days. I am SO happy that between what I heard on the raqdio and at home (And church) when I was a kid, I learned to love ALL kinds of styles of music. And it's also nice that now days my kids and I share a love of mutual artists. (Tho they have a few I just don't "get"--and vice-versa. LOL! I suppose such as that is unavoidable. *sigh*)
