Thought this might be fun...let's see if we can match a song title to each of the 50 states. If you can't locate a song with the name of the state in the title, a city/town in the state will work also.
Here are the 50 states in alphabetical order:
Alabama Alaska Arizona Arkansas California Colorado Connecticut Delaware Florida Georgia Hawaii Idaho Illinois Indiana Iowa Kansas Kentucky Louisiana Maine Maryland Massachusetts Michigan Minnesota Mississippi Missouri Montana Nebraska Nevada New Hampshire New Jersey New Mexico New York North Carolina North Dakota Ohio Oklahoma Oregon Pennsylvania Rhode Island South Carolina South Dakota Tennessee Texas Utah Vermont Virginia Washington West Virginia Wisconsin Wyoming I'll start it off with: Utah - Osmonds

Not wanting to go all Dave-ish on you, Pete, but Dawn did say that the reference to state or city/town/area should be in the title. That doesn't happen in your songs for Wisconsin or Maine. BTW, I was trying to think of a Maine song myself, and the first thing I thought of was "Tombstone Every Mile" When I lived in Bangor back in the late '60s/early '70s, Dick Curliss was probably their most famous native son - of course that was before Stephen King started getting his books published.

Sorry, Ed... Didn't realize. I was just wasting time at work (since they wasted my time for the past month!) As for "Tombstone", One of my best friends is a HUGE Dick Curless fan, that's how I know the song. He's actually met Dick's widow/family, and performed in Dick Curless tribute shows. Wasn't sure if anyone here knew of Dick Curless or not, but I'm glad you do!

As Ed mentioned, ideally the state or city/town should be in the lyrics, but I'm thinking we may have trouble coming up with titles for some of the states (I'm drawing a blank on Oregon) and will need to go to lyrics. So, we'll go with your suggestions for Wisconsin and Maine, and can add more songs later if needed. As it stands now, we have: Alabama Alaska - North to Alaska - Johnny Horton (Ed) Arizona - Arizona - Mark Lindsay (Pete) Arkansas California - L.A. Woman - Doors (Alan) Colorado - Rocky Mountain High - John Denver (Pete) Connecticut Delaware Florida - Florida Room - Donald Fagen (Dawn) Georgia - The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia - Vicki Lawrence (Alan) Hawaii - Hawaii Five-O - Ventures (Ed) Idaho - Idaho - Four Seasons (Ed) Illinois - Illinois Enema Bandit - Frank Zappa (Adam) Indiana - Indiana Wants Me - R. Post by Laura--I wuv u all :) on Jan 17, 2008 12:51:42 GMT -5
I'll see how many of these I can fill in:
Alabama (skipping the all-too-obvious Lynyrd Skynyrd song)-"My Home's in Alabama"-Alabama
Arkansas-"Arkansas"-Glenn Campbell
Delaware-if we're going by lyrics: "Level Head"-Bruce Carroll (contemporary Christian singer) ("a one-night stand up in Delaware")
Iowa-"Iowa Stubborn"-from the musical "The Music Man"
Kansas-"Lonely Boy in Kansas"-Wendell Burton (another contemporary Christian guy)
Nevada-"Viva Las Vegas"-Elvis (I'm surprised no one else came up with this one already)
New Jersey-again going only by lyrics-"Convoy"-C.W. McCall ("well we laid a strip for the Jersey shore"--I'm assuming the Jersey shore is in NJ, right?)
Oregon-"Don't Take Me Alive"-Steely Dan ("well I crossed my old man up in Oregon, don't take me alive") I googled this to make absolutely sure this was the right lyric!
Pennsylvania (I'm surprised no one filled this in yet; there are lots of them either with PA or Philadelphia)-"Pennsylvania 6-5000"-Glenn Miller (ok, that's a phone number, but so what?)
South Carolina-"Charleston"-standard ("made in South Caroline") Sorry I don't know who recorded this; I've got the music in a Reader's Digest book and that's how I know the song.
Texas (there are a lot of songs with this one also)-"God Blessed Texas"-Little Texas
Vermont-"Moonlight in Vermont"-standard (I'm pretty sure I've heard at least one recorded version of this, but I don't know who recorded it)
Virginia-"Carry Me Back to Old Virginny"-folk song (this would be considered "politically incorrect" nowadays)
Washington-"Seattle"-Perry Como
Wyoming-"Git Along Little Dogies"-folk song ('you know that Wyoming will be your new home")
Sorry I can't give any artists on some of the really old songs. Dawn, I don't know the Osmonds' song "Utah", but since they are from there, it doesn't surprise me that they have a song w/that name. I was gonna say "Ford Econoline" by Nanci Griffith ("he was a Salt Lake City rounder"), but then I saw you had already filled Utah in.
BTW, I went back and changed my answer on Alabama--I did have "Stars Fell on Alabama" but didn't know who had recorded it (that's another one I know from one of those Reader's Digest music books). So I went with one where I knew who had recorded it. And as I said before, I didn't put "Sweet Home Alabama" because that is way too obvious (I'm surprised no one put "Sweet Home Chicago" for IL).
