Here goes... PRONOUN USAGE! Three first person possessive/declarations-- I NEVER CRY--Alice Cooper (close--#12) I AM, I SAID--Neil Diamond (top 10) I GOT A NAME--Jim Croce (top 10) And one negative (a question) AM I THE MAN?--Jackie Wilson First of all, welcome to the game, Gremm You are one of the people that I see as someone who's going to play this game well. Unfortunately, your answer is incorrect. -- But a guess made like a true teacher. I hadn't seen your response before I posted my latest clues. And your guesses does not change the clue about only one person getting one correct song one time. In pother words, none of your songs are correct. -- But it probably eliminates some songs that peoople may have been considering. Anyway ... the game continues. SHAZBOT! Well, back to the drawin' board...

OK. Enough already! We're getting nowhere fast, and I have to lower the maximum point total for one person to 4 (total of six points are still available)
Here is a cliew revue - uh - clue review:
1. First of all, of all the people who have made guesses so far, only ONE person got ONE song right (but for the wrong reason, so it's not worth a point.) -- But all it says is one of the correct songs has been mentioned.
2. Of the four songs, two are top 10 songs (and one more is pretty close though)
3. The theme is a phrase/cliche/saying.
4. A component of the theme shows up in three titles (twice on the positive side, and one that has to be used in a negative way.) The other occurence of the positive component is in the lyrics.
****************
and here are a couple more clues:
5. The top 10 songs both have the inclusive part of the theme. One in the title, the other in the lyrics. The song that just missed the top ten has the other side of the theme - the part that doesn't fit with the other two - the part that is excluded. The song that was nowhere near the top 10 also has the inclusive part of the song in the title.
6. Most of us need and participate in the inclusive part, but would really prefer like the part that was excluded - at least sometime.
Now I hope I gave you enough to work with.
Name that theme!!

OK "Alanski" , I'll try to be clearer. However, I think if you read the whole thread, it'll make sense. OK. Two things: First: People have made a variety of guesses for themes as well as for songs. All of the theme guesses made so far by Woody, Pete, Juggie and Grem have been incorrect. However, ONE person did guess ONE right song ONE time. By applying some logic, using the clues I gave about number of top ten songs etc., and using the rules of the game (no songs that are not top 40, etc., one should be able to narrow down the choices. For instance, two people (Woody and Pete) both chose Solitary Man as the Neil Diamond song. So that cannot be the right song. Second: Maybe you are confused about the three positives and a negative (or three included and one excluded) nature of the theme. Here's an example of what I mean (maybe this will make it clearer for others also): Let's say that the theme were: "Everybody likes to speak loudly; nobody whispers." (I know that's not a common cliche, but lets pretend it is) And the artists were: Tears for Fears The Beatles James Brown The Dell Vikings. The songs would be: Shout Twist and Shout Say It Loud (I'm Black and I'm Proud) Whispering Bells Make sense?

Well, we're down to three points -- and I'm wondering if there's anybody alive out there. Earlier on, we had some attempts. Lately, nothing. Anyway, here are some more clues. -- and don't forget to look at the earlier clues and earlier today I gave an example as to how this theme is structured. OK. Only one song is Top 5 - and barely. Another just makes it into single figures. One of the artists (or lead singer) on these two songs has passed on. The other two songs, I think I already said that the one that just missed the top ten is the song that represents the negative part of the theme. The other is top 40/bottom ten. One of the artists (or lead singer) on these two songs has passed on. Okay, now ... quit playin' around and ..... Name That Theme !!

Ed, I have been working with this ALL weekend and now that it's Thursday, I STILL don't have an answer. this is one of the HARDEST Name That Theme threads ever! Well, Pete, for a while I was worried that the problem might have been that the theme was an old-fashioned saying that you younger folks might not have ever heard. But I googled it, and while it's been around for a long time, it's still apparently used. I got nearly one million hits on the phrase. I also think that some of those clues that narrowed the number of songs should help. Well ... there will be another clue tonight. If that doesn't do it, the last clue will come Friday night. And the later clues give more information.

OK. We're down to 2 points. I don't think this has ever happened before. Maybe Pete is right and this is the most difficult NTT game ever -- and over 3+ seasons, we have played over 100 games (I think)
So two new clues coming up -- and go back and look at the other clues - you'll need them.
The first new clue:
Of the four songs, the highest ranked song has the key word in the title. (it may appear as a compound word of which only part is used)
The second ranked song has the same key word in the lyrics
The third-highest ranked song has the OPPOSITE word in the title
The lowest ranked song has the key word in the title (it may show up as a different form of the word)
Of the two highest ranked songs: IN NO SET ORDER, One is done by Alice Cooper, and the other is done by Jackie Wilson. (remember one living, one dead? , well that's who we're talking about.)
Here's the second clue. As in the past, I used the key words (both of them more than once) during my clues and other instructions. And, much to my surprise, Pete used one of them as well (but didn't know it. ;D )
Name That Theme!

Third swing, hope I don't miss Jackie Wilson - Baby Workout Alice Cooper - You & Me (When I come home from work) Neil Diamond - Play Me Jim Croce - Workin' At the Car Wash Blues Theme: All Work and no Play makes Jack a dull boy This one was hard. OK, Woody! It was indeed a difficult puzzle - even more difficult than I thought it would be. But you got all the songs right and the theme as well. I would have accepted just the "All Work and No Pay" part. In fact, had it gone down to one point my final clue would have been "Makes Jack a Dull Boy" So, that's two points for Woody, and no one else gets any points, although some good attempts from Pete, Juggie and Grem. So, Woody, you are still pitching a shutout. Since the time stamp for Woody's correct answer was 1:35 AM here in the east, the next game will start on Monday. Hopefully, more people see how the game is played - both the hard games and the easy games, and more people will participate. and the score: 55dodger 12 Laura 0 Pete 70s 0 Jughead 0 Gremashlo 0 Everybody else DNP
