The music community lost powerhouse drummer TOny Thompson on Wednesday. He was diagnosed with renal-cell cancer not more than a week ago. He was only 48. While he may not have been a household name, his talent was heard many album and tours.
He was the drummer for the short lived Power Station ("Some Like It Hot")...his grooves for Chic and just about everything else Nile Rogers and Bernard Edwards produced were legendary...and just a sampling of his better known work included Robert Palmer's "Riptide" album, David Bowie's "Let's Dance", Madonna's "Like A Virgin", plus albums by Rod Stewart, Mick Jagger, and many others. He also backed Page/Plant and Jones at Live Aid and might have been Bonzo's replacement had they decided to go on from that point.
A sad day in music indeed!

WOW!! Isn't it strange how we've pretty much lost that entire "Power Station" collaberation recently!?? I mean, I hope only the best for the other members - they've got a big tour with Duran Duran coming, complete with all five original members. RIP Tony....

Tony was very talented, with a very unique, energetic drumming style. I've always especially enjoyed his work with Chic, one of the finest disco/dance acts of the late 70s.

How sad! Several years ago, we lost another Chic member, bassist/producer Bernard Edwards. For the 3 male genius forces behind Chic, that now only leaves Nile Rodgers. Sure hope Chic get into the Hall only sooner for their most unique original disco sound. And ironically, I came across one "Tony Thompson" earlier today for 1995 hitmakers, but that one was Hi-Five's former lead singer "I like the way, the kissing game". How weird RIP Tony...
