(Nashville, Tennessee-AP) -- A successful Nashville songwriter who recorded a big pop hit in the late 1970's has died.
Randy VanWarmer died Monday night in Seattle, where he was being treated for leukemia. He was 48.
VanWarmer's song "Just When I Needed You Most" reached number four on Billboard's pop chart in 1979.
He wrote "I'm in a Hurry (And Don't Know Why),'' a number one hit by the country group Alabama in 1992, and "I Guess It Never Hurts to Hurt Sometimes,"number one by the Oak Ridge Boys in 1984.
A close friend says VanWarmer had an "angelic'' voice.
He recently recorded a duet with country singer Razzy Bailey, "Sandcastles,'' due to be released this spring.

That's terrible! Someone had to be "first" for 2004. In a GREAT year chock full of disco, arena rock, and soft pop/rock, this super ballad set apart from the pack that year. It was one of BeatleAnt's all time faves, back in the days of YL. Heard a few other tunes, but "Most" was just magnificent.
RIP Randy.

I remember hearing Just When I Needed You Most all the time back in '79 - good tune! I had no idea he wrote "In a Hurry" for Alabama - it's one of my favorites from them . RIP Randy

Sad news, even though I had never heard of the guy until the news of his death came over the radio airwaves.
