You've been waiting a whole year! Now it's time to reveal...
[glow=purple,2,300]DJ Dave's CRAZY Top 1000, 1955-1994!!![/glow]
1000. EASIER SAID THAN DONE-Essex(63)(#1-2 wks, B'board, #1-1 wk-DJD)
Simple #1, no strings attached. Female lead by Anita Humes, based at NC's Camp LeJeune AFB. Always a pleasure to listen to. Follow-up was a virtual clone, "A walkin' miracle".
999. GET OUTTA MY DREAMS, GET INTO MY CAR-Billy Ocean(88)(#1-2 wks, B'board, #9-DJD)
High-powered tune, all over top 40, R & B, and adult radio in the spring '88. First of Billy's 3 in the "elite circle", the CRAZY top 1000.
998. GIMME SOME LOVIN'-Spencer Davis Group(67)(#7, B'board, #1-1 wk.-DJD)
Man, what a song! Cool tambourine/bass intro! Perhaps one of the UK's best tunes of the 60's, featuring 18 year old Stevie Winwood. Although it lost to "A hard Day's night" in my "Jolly Good" tourneys, the follow-up "I'm a man" is in my Elite 8! Rock on!
997. DON'T BRING ME DOWN-ELO(79)(#4, B'board, #4-DJD)
As close as they got to the idiom of the time--DISCO! VERY close 2nd today behind "Telephone Line" as my fave, but this is their lone entry in my top 1000, their biggest Billboard hit. From their great "Discovery" album (that seer holding that spaceship!), noticiably absent from all their past efforts was the violin/cello section.
996. WELCOME BACK-John Sebastian(76)(#1-1 wk, B'board, #3-DJD)
The Lovin' Spoonful's former lead singer singing the title from the great "Welcome back Kotter" TV show. Sweatin' with the Sweathogs (included John Travolta as Vinnie Barbarino). Another great tune, huge on radio then, hardly played today. "Yeah, we tease him a lot, 'cuz we got him on the spot!"
995. FATHER FIGURE-George Michael(88)(#1-2 wks, B'board, #2-DJD)
Nice, wonderful ballad, more memories as a senior in high school. First of 4 from the "Faith" album in my top 1000. Although I like "One more try" today, this peaked higher on my list.
994. COME SOFTLY TO ME-Fleetwoods(59)(#1-4 wks, B'board, #1-1 wk-DJD)
Pretty tune--these days, I'd much rather hear thir other biggie "Mr. Blue" (#1158). Typical to their hits, Gary Troxel fronts two ladies singing in nice, close harmony.
993. THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE FREE-Luther Vandross with Janet Jackson, Ralph Tresvant & Bell Biv DeVoe(92)(#10, B'board, #2-DJD)
If you listened to top 40 radio, especially "rhythm/crossover", in the summer '92, this tune could not be silent for less than every hour. This is SERIOUS "new jack", from the film "Mo money". Luther never sounded in such upbeat form! "And I'mmmm freeeeeeeee....yeah"
992. I STILL HAVEN'T FOUND WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR-U2(87)(#1-2 wks, B'board, #7-DJD)
First of 2 biggies from "The Joshua Tree" in my top 1000. I didn't like this as much as "With or without you", but it's all right every now and then. File this one today in the "Classic Rock" category.
991. SUMMERTIME-DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince(91)(#4, B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD)
DRUMS, PLEASE!
Hot on the heels of the TV show "Fresh Prince of Bel Air", came this great song of many people's fave season. It's their first of 2 in my top 1000, and their biggest national hit as a duo. DIG that sample of Kool & the Gang's "Summer madness"!
990. WHY CAN'T WE BE FRIENDS-War(75)(#6, B'board, #5-DJD)
One of the LA Latin/R & B's best known tunes, the song's strongest feature is that each of the 7 members take turns singing a verse. You'll find it on both the "Have a Nice Decade:70's" box set and the "Can you dig it: 70's soul" box set. Fave line: "I know you're waiting for the CIA, they wouldn't have you in the Ma-fie-AY!"
989. I GOT YOU (I FEEL GOOD)-James Brown(65)(#3, B'board, #1-1 wk-DJD)
The Godfather of Soul's most legendary, memorable, and biggest hit. This is really one of those "feel-good" tunes, some website said this was "my song"--pretty true! Dig not only the raucous voice, but those horns, bass and rhythm!
988. GET UP AND BOOGIE (THAT'S RIGHT)-Silver Convention(76)(#2, B'board, #5-DJD)
Rather simplistic in lyrics, the song's entire lyrics are the title! Though the name "Silver Convention" may not be too well known today, the German studio disco outfit left the world 2 memorable classics: This one, and "Fly robin fly", both in my top 1000.
987.DON'T STOP-Fleetwood Mac(77)(#3, B'board, #4-DJD)
Notoriously best known as Bob Dole's '96 campaign song, and then had to be "yanked". One of Rumours' standout tracks, perhaps the best Buckingham/C. McVie composition. Great song of thinking of the future, and never having to "look back".
986.RIGHT HERE WAITING-Richard Marx(89)(#1-3 wks, B'board, #39-DJD)
I play most of the other songs on my countdown, but I can't bear to hear this. Overplayed and dedicated to the point of no return. If I hear this ONE more time in a "Long distance dedication", I'll bust! I'd MUCH rather hear "Satisfied" and "Too late to say goodbye" from the same album, "Repeat offender".
985.SUNDOWN-Gordon Lightfoot(74)(#1-1 wk, B'board, #2-DJD)
Ahh...that's better LOL. Gord's lone US #1, and his only entry in my top 1000. The stuff fine music's made of. I SWEAR the bluesy guitar in this inspired Tracy Chapman's "Give me one reason".
984.THE HAPPENING-Supremes(67)(#1-1 wk, B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD)
Just about my fave from Diana, Mary and Flo! How could Dave Marsh POSSIBLY rank this as one of the worst #1's ever? NO WAY! Title tune from an obscure movie, this song has that instrumentation and rhythm! Flo's last hit with the group, replaced by Cindy Birdsong.
983.DESIRE-U2(88)(#3, B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD)
Great tune from Rattle and Hum! My all-time fave of theirs, the rhythm sound like a Native American Indian dance. One of my fave songs I enjoyed playing in my first year of college. And the harmonica's WAYYYY cool!
982.BURNING LOVE-Elvis Presley(72)(#2, B'board, #5-DJD)
The King's biggest hit of the 70's, and one of his best known of all. And funny, most people get confused when I say Elvis had a #1 in '59 with "A big hunk o' love", and people think it's THIS song! Nope, 2 entirely different songs.
981.DOWNTOWN-Petula Clark(65)(#1-2 wks, B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD)
One of my early childhood faves, and still a great fave of mine. The British lass was already over 30 when she came to America with this, and many hits followed for 3 1/2 years. Lost to "Nights in White Satin" in my "Jolly Good" Sweet 16.
980.TWO PRINCES-Spin Doctors(93)(#7, B'board, #15-DJD)
After getting much pop and rock airplay its first three months out, all I could say every time in my head the percussion intro came on right on up till about '97 was "MAKE IT STOP!!!" I've heard the song virtually nil in the last 5 years. Maybe I might have the courage to play it again, after all, the Spin Doctors were one of the 90's best rock groups!
979.BLUE VELVET-Bobby Vinton(63)(#1-3 wks, B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD)
My fave song of "The Polish Prince", remake of a top 20 Tony Bennett song from 1951. Nothing special, this and "Mr. Lonely" have always been my top 2 of his since childhood.
978.ICE ICE BABY-Vanilla Ice(90)(#1-1 wk, B'board, #3-DJD)
Billboard's first #1 single by a rap artist, let alone a white rapper. This song is always a fun listen, sampled from Queen and David Bowie's "Under pressure". And out flew 7 million copies of "To the extreme", none of which were on vinyl. 3 albums followed, much to Ice's liking (all with a rougher ragga/alternative sound), but very poor in sales. Just about the most interesting person ever to hit #1...
977.HONEYCOMB-Jimmie Rodgers(57)(#1-4 wks, B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD)
Great pop tune with a country/R & B feel to it, a fave of my parents as well of mine. The first of his many hits, he's still one of the rock era's top 200 biggest artists. Originally from Camus, Washington, he named himself after the "Father of Country music".
976.ENDLESS LOVE-Luther Vandross & Mariah Carey(94)(#2, B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD)
I could get flack for saying this; I like this version better than Diana Ross and Lionel Richie's original, which is up higher in the list. I loved Mariah's music so much in the last few years, that this song had to be a "natural smash" for me. Nice.
More on the way!
P.S.-What? I could only post 10,000 characters? Lame.
