Onward, DJ Dave sayeth!
975. I RAN (SO FAR AWAY)-A Flock of Seagulls(82)(#9-B'board, #3-DJD)
A most quintessential song of the times, part of the MTV British invasion of the 80's. Played this and "Space Age love song" LOTS in college, always picture that record spinning with the Jive "note" logo. All that crazy hair!--I know one member looked more "ordinary". Oh, those saucers are getting closer!!!
974. BAD BOYS-Inner Circle(93)(#8-B'board, #1-3 wks-DJD)
Yes, that theme song from the Saturday evening FOX show, "Cops". Still going strong after nearly 12 years. Worldwide popular Jamaican group who were a small blip on the map with this and "Sweat" in '93. Cool!
973. INTO THE NIGHT-Benny Mardones(80/89)(#11-B'board, #1-1 wk-DJD)
Originally from Cleveland, raised in Savage, MD. Popular love song from the last 25 years, it hit the top 20 two times at opposite ends of the 80's. After the SMASH success of this in Syracuse, Benny resided there the remainder of the decade and came up with local hits like "Sheila C". Love the piano!
972. RAMBLIN' MAN-Allman Brothers(73)(#2-B'board, #2-DJD)
A most classic Southern rock track, Dickey Betts' guitar really shines. In fact, every instrument's right on the money, complete with dual drumming. "Rollin' down Highway 41"! RIP Berry and Duane.
971. HANGIN' TOUGH-New Kids on the Block(89)(#1-1 wk-B'board, #1-1 wk-DJD)
Although the kids had been charting for a year, this was the tune of theirs that got me REALLY liking them. Nowadays, this one song is dismissed by non-fans as total schlock. But boy this cheesy track grooves-single mix, anyway! We're ROUGH!!!
970. MELLOW YELLOW-Donovan(66)(#2-B'board, #2-DJD)
Some of rock music's more unusual lyrics, you can tell this tune's about a drig trip. Even heard this recently in a Red Lobster! The Scottish born singer/guitarist's only entry in the top 1000, with those memorable whispers from Sir Paul.
969. DO ANYTHING-Natural Selection(91)(#2-B'board, #2-DJD)
File this under "Lost 90's" hits! Big on Top 40 radio then, haven't hardly heard it since. A minneapolis duo with strong influences from Prince. "Just can't get enough"
968. I'M HENRY VIII, I AM-Herman's Hermits(65)(#1-1 wk-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD)
Their first tune I remember, very juvenile in its lyrics, a sort of Old-time British dance hall song that was not a UK single. Fun to spell along! Cool ending--all in 1:49!
967. ROCKIN' ROBIN-Bobby Day(58)(#2-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD)
R & B singer born Robert Byrd, another boppin' childhood memory! These days, I like this even better than MJ's remake. Great whistles! Flip side's the original "Over and over", later remade by the DC5 into a #1 hit.
966. HAVE YOU NEVER BEEN MELLOW-Olivia Newton-John(75)(#1-1 wk-B'board, #3-DJD)
Despite the song's obviously dated quality, this has always been my fave early tune of hers. Not quite as country as "Let me be there", and certainly more cheerful than "I honestly love you".
965. HOLD ON-En Vogue(90)(#2-B'board, #13-DJD)
A hip hop groove combines with wonderful harmonies! So much confusion in the spring '90 when this was riding high on the charts at the same time as a different "Hold On" by Wilson Phillips. Platinum single.
964. TAKE MY BREATH AWAY-Berlin(86)(#1-1 wk-B'board, #9-DJD)
SUPER song writing and producing by synth legend Giorgio Moroder! Previously, Berlin were a more agressive synthish band, and this "Top Gun" ballad was easily the LA band's biggest. Terri Nunn, a great singer and actress, is HOT!
963. HELP ME RHONDA-Beach Boys(65)(#1-2 wks-B'board, #1-1 wk-DJD)
One of 4 #1's from California's premier surf/rock group, the single version's so much better than the sloppy album version. Sounded great on all those beaches in the summer '65! "Get 'er outta my heart!"
962. MOTHER-IN-LAW(61)(#1-1 wk-B'board, #2-DJD)
One of the early 60's best R & B #1's, song's a lot like something Fats Domino would have done, piano and all--and both New Orleans guys! LOVE it! RIP.
961. TOM DOOLEY-Kingston Trio(58)(#1-1 wk-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD)
The legendary folk trio's first and biggest. Based on the real life story of an 1860's man named Tom Dula. Sold more albums from 1958-1963 than anyone else.
960. OUT OF THE BLUE-Debbie Gibson(88)(#3-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD)
One of my fave tunes in my HS senior year, as well as my fave artist. Deb pretty much did everything with the song (as well as on the album). Great guitar in the bridge!
959. OH GIRL-Chi-Lites(72)(#1-1 wk-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD)
One of the great, understated soul trios of the early 70's--one of only 2 that radio still seems to play. But what a classic! Great piano, strings and harmonica! "Have you ever seen such a helpless man..."
958. QUEEN OF HEARTS-Juice Newton(81)(#2-B'board, #6-DJD)
Pop/country selection originally done a few years before by Dave Edmunds. Heard this lots in the summer '81, especially at summer camp. Great memories!
957. I LIKE IT-Dino(89)(#7-B'board, #5-DJD)
Pop/dance singer, also a Las Vegas DJ (last name-Esposito). Stayed over 9 months on my chart, still love it today. Energetic little number, wished I heard this more often on "retro shows".
956. TOO MUCH-Elvis Presley(57)(#1-3 wks-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD)
Nothing overly special, this is one of his lesser known #1's. A slower midtempo tune, haven't heard the tune a whole lot to remember much of the words!
955. RICH GIRL-Hall & Oates(77)(#1-2 wks-B'board, #4-DJD)
Perhaps my fave earlier one of them; one of the 70's shorter-timed #1's (2:24). Thom-Bell like arrangement with its strings. Always a winner, remember its use on K-tel's "Stars" TV ads.
954. RAMBLIN' GAMBLIN' MAN-Bob Seger System(69)(#17-B'board, #1-1 wk-DJD)
His first hit, and still my fave of his! Man, talk about rockin' rhythm! The "live" version's not even half as good. Great percussion tied in with organ!
953. SHOP AROUND-Miracles(61)(#2-B'board, #3-DJD)
Motown's first top 10 pop hit, became one of the label's biggest classics. Smokey's really showing off that vocal power!
952. IT'S SO HARD TO SAY GOODBYE TO YESTERDAY-Boyz II Men(91)(#2-B'board, #18-DJD) A capella song originally done in 1975 by G.C. Cameron from the film "Motown Philly". that mourned the loss of people gone by, one version mentioned singers like Sarah Vaughan. Very chilling, fits even more today with the loss of YesterdayLand. No changing the past...
951. CAUSING A COMMOTION-Madonna(87)(#2-B'board, #4-DJD)
Perplexed why I still have it up this high. I think when I originally did a big list back in '87, the song was then current and it ranked #793. I only moved this song down proportionately with some other songs. Man, this won't even be in my top 3000 next time! Not even one of my faves of hers today, from the film "Who's that girl".
More to come. I have a VERY busy schedule, and this project DOES take me some time.
See you 'round!
