Here we go again!
925. MY LIFE-Billy Joel(78/79)(#3-B'board, #2-DJD)
Today, it's my personal fave of his. Great, midtempo groove! Made 52nd Street such a great album. Later used as the theme from TV's "Bosom Buddies". "Leave me alone!"
924. HE'S A REBEL-Crystals(62)(#1-2 wks-B'board, #1-1 wk-DJD)
One of Phil Spector's best productions. Flawless in every way, but the real billing should have been "Darlene Love and the Blossoms". Still, it's wonderful.
923. TUSH-ZZ Top(75)(#20-B'board, #4-DJD)
Always a concert crowd pleaser! Originally from their great Fandango album. The "digital" mix on the Greatest Hits doesn't compare. Rock on, Texas boys!
922. CREAM-Prince & the New Power Generation(91)(#1-2 wks-B'board, #1-6 wks-DJD)
My all-time personal fave of this. The Purple One can do wrong! Great guitar blending in with the synth. "Sh-boogie bop"!
921. GO AWAY LITTLE GIRL-Donny Osmond(71)(#1-3 wks-B'board, #2-DJD)
My sister definitely went Osmond-crazy throughout the 70's, and now it's me that appreciates their talent. At least they looked (and still look) good! Steve Lawrence's original may be more classic, but this remake has more sentimental value to me.
920. SOMETHING ABOUT YOU-Level 42(86)(#7-B'board, #5-DJD)
Boy, did I LOVE many of Spring 86's music! This was no exception. A British synth pop outfit that leaned a little jazzy. Very overlooked today, their 3 albums from 1985-1989 are great! Mark King's good on vocals.
919. YOU SEND ME-Sam Cooke(57)(#1-3 wks-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD)
This one will rank higher next list. One of the great tunes that successfully transcended the line of pop, rock, and R & B. One of the best soul singers ever. RIP, Sam.
918. I GO CRAZY-Paul Davis(78)(#7-B'board, #5-DJD)
One of the great, timeless soft rock classics. Will never grow out of it, forever will be in my top 1000. Super keyboards, passionate vocals. 40 weeks on the HOT 100, a record at the time.
917. DEVIL INSIDE-INXS(88)(#2-B'board, #1-3 wks-DJD)
First of the 2 in the top 1000 from the Aussie sextet. Even more groovy than "Need you tonight"! One of my fave groups in my HS senior year. Super guitar hook!
916. CAN'T GET ENOUGH-Bad Company(74)(#5-B'board, #2-DJD)
The British group's first, biggest, and best! Solid rock! Really, for 70's quality rock, this one's hard to top, yet the even better "All right now" by Paul Rodgers' earlier group, Free, is up higher. Love that ending! Oh, just discovered BC have yet one more up higher!
915. TRUE-Spandau Ballet(83)(#4-B'board, #3-DJD)
After 20 years, this ballad's still hard to shake off. Best part-the sax solo! Unforgettable use at the end of "The Wedding Singer". Easily, the biggest of their five on my whole list--they should have at least 10 songs on my next updated list.
914. DANGER ZONE-Kenny Loggins(86)(#2-B'board, #6-DJD)
One of the many movie hits in the 80's for Kenny, this is the best tune from "Top Gun"! Makes you wanna get ready for action! Giorgio Moroder's always been a great producer! "The further on the edge, the hotter the intensity".
913. DEVIL WITH A BLUE DRESS ON/GOOD GOLLY MISS MOLLY-Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels(66)(#4-B'board, #2-DJD)
It's not a 60's party without this! Remakes of 2 tunes, an obscure '64 Shorty Long number, and Little Richard's '58 classic. Every instrument's dead on! Killer vocals! I have 2 different versions of this on CD, BTW.
912. HAIR-Cowsills(69)(#2-B'board, #2-DJD)
Version of the groovy love tribal rock musical theme song, done bubblegum style. Clever lyrics, nice slow intro building up to an upbeat anthem. "And spaghetti'd!" "Then my hair's too short..." And they have one more coming up higher. Peace!
911. LOVE HER MADLY-Doors(71)(#11-B'board, #2-DJD)
Their best later-era song, peaking just a couple months before Jim's tragic death. Cool "All year long" bridges, and one of the best organ solos EVER! You go, Ray!
910. DON'T WALK AWAY-Jade(93)(#4-B'board, #7-DJD)
Yes, I was still actively listening to top 40 music in '93. And was this overplayed. 3 gals from L.A., nice hip-hop/pop groove. Nothing overly special, it's ranked as one of Billboard's all-time biggest non-#1's.
909. THE WAH-WATUSI-Orlons(62)(#2-B'board, #1-1 wk-DJD)
Not to be confused with the Vibrations "Watusi". 3 woman, 1 man Philly group whose name was inspired from the Chiffons. They had a good run of hits for a little over a year. And when is that Cameo/Parkway box set gonna be released? ;D
908. THAT'S ROCK AND ROLL-Shaun Cassidy(77)(#3-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD)
Absolutely LOVED this around the time of my 8th birthday. Follow-up to "Da Do Ron Ron", didn't know Eric Carmen's original till the late '80's. "Get with it!"
907. BROWN EYED GIRL-Van Morrison(67)(#10-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD)
Timeless rock/oldies classic. Finally got it on CD a few months back; up from #1669 (1987 list). Ticked to hear the edited version--MUST say "Making love in the green gr@ss"! Curiously, the original album it came from "Blowin' your mind" barely scratched the Billboard Top 200 albums. "Sha la la la!"
906. HEARTACHE TONIGHT-Eagles(79)(#1-1 wk-B'board, #3-DJD)
The last of their 5 #1's, great vocal from Glenn. This really rocked many people's worlds! Don't forget that drum outro! Man, that great fall '79 music...
905. THE POWER-Snap!(90)(#2-B'board, #5-DJD)
Original hip-hop, tough to copy. One of the many female-sung, male-rapped hits of the time. "It's gettin' kinda hectic!"
904. HERE COMES THE RAIN AGAIN-Eurythmics(84)(#4-B'board, #4-DJD)
One of their biggest, first release from their "Touch" album. So many great tunes, so many good videos. Perhaps Annie's most passionate vocal. "Shoo-ay!"
903. JUST THE WAY YOU ARE-Billy Joel(77/78)(#3-B'board, #6-DJD)
A timeless pop standard. There's nothing wrong with it whatsoever, except I'd much rather hear the longer version (includes a second verse "Don't change the color of your hair"). The electric piano is awesome, the ending is breathtaking. And another great sax as well. Billy Joel at his most sincere.
902. THE WANDERER-Dion(61/62)(#2-B'board, #1-1 wk-DJD)
Fine artist, but I'll probably move this down a little next list. Not to be confused with Donna Summer's song! (#930) What's with these great sax solos?
901. DO WAH DIDDY DIDDY-Manfred MannDion(64)(#1-2 wks-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD)
Perhaps a little overplayed, but still a fun party tune. Originally a minor hit earlier in '64 for the Exciters. Made the British invasion still swingin'!
More to come...
