Closer and closer to the top!!!
900. BECAUSE I LOVE YOU (THE POSTMAN SONG)-Stevie B(90)(#1-4 wks-B'board, #14-DJD)
One of those tender love ballads that struck a nerve in many people. Primarily a Latin/freestyle artist, the Miami man (full name-Steven Bernard Hill) had recorded a few slower things, none as monstrous as this. Beautiful piano.
899. THE RUBBERBAND MAN-Spinners(76)(#2-B'board, #2-DJD)
One of the Detroit group's biggest, and deservedly so.
Fine instrumentation, supreme producing of Thom Bell.
"Guaranteed to blow your mind!" Sho 'nuff funky!
898. SMOKIN' IN THE BOYS ROOM-Brownsville Station(73/74)(#3-B'board, #3-DJD)
Classic rock anthem that doesn't seem to get quite enough radio airplay today. For a long while, I liked the Crue's remake just as much, but this original now is considerably better--it never seems to age. Awesome spoken intro! But 2 things still mystify me--I usually know the group as a trio, but I've heard and read they were also a quartet. And THE lead singer of this--all my books say Michael Lutz is the lead singer of the group, but I've also read Cub Koda not only wrote this with Michael, but sang the lead as well. Ken or someone else--was this song done as a trio or quartet, and is Cub indeed the lead singer? Still, one of the 70's best rockers! RIP, Cub.
897. 19-Paul Hardcastle(85)(#15-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD)
What a record of contrast! FIERCE dance beat, maybe the 80's best beat of any song. Yet, I've known very few people who like this, simply because the record talks about the grim reality of the Vietnam War (The title refers to the average age of the Vietnam soldier). Certainly made the summer '85 so great! #1 UK smash for a month by the British keyboardist .
896. 867-5309/JENNY-Tommy Tutone(82)(#4-B'board, #4-DJD)
One of the great tunes that made the early MTV era happen! San Francisco GROUP (not a solo artist) led by Tommy Heath, and the biggest hit with a phone # in the title. Contrary to popular belief, Tommy Tutone are NOT one top 40 hit wonders--in fact their other top 40 hit tune came before 867-5309--"Angel Say No", a #38 song from 1980.
895. SHE'S JUST MY STYLE-Gary Lewis & the Playboys(66)(#3-B'board, #2-DJD)
One of the best 60's groups, one of their best hits! After "Diamond ring", the tune I next knew of them, around 1981. Of all their tunes, their most Beach Boys-soundalike tune (at least the way I hear it).
894. MIDNIGHT BLUE-Lou Gramm(87)(#5-B'board, #2-DJD)
Foreigner's lead singer, originally from Rochester, New York. Even though his second solo album was better, I've always liked this the most of his solo songs--man it ROCKS! One of my fave tunes from my HS junior year.
893. BATDANCE-Prince(89)(#1-1 wk-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD)
The movie was so overhyped from the beginning, it wasn't funny. At least Prince composed a rather decent soundtrack, this tune just HAD to be a smash--of course, I haven't heard it on radio since the 1989 countdown. Cool sampling from the movie!
892. THE CISCO KID-War(73)(#2-B'board, #2-DJD)
The L.A. latin/soul/jazz outfit's biggest Billboard hit, great instrumentation as usual. LOVE the bridges with the "Whoopee!" shouts! Definitely one of the best 70's-only groups. RIP Papa Dee and Charlie.
891. SISTER GOLDEN HAIR-America(75)(#1-1 wk-B'board, #2-DJD)
I NEVER get sick of this! In fact, I almost love this more than ever before! One of the mid 70's best #1's in every way, the super production by George Martin, fine guitars (especially the slide), super lyrics and vocals, and topped off with one of the best #1 endings ever! uh 1-2-3-4! WOOO!
890. YOU'VE GOT A FRIEND-James Taylor(71)(#1-1 wk-B'board, #3-DJD)
Super ballad composed by Carole King--both versions are outstanding. Hardly a month goes by when I don't hear this. My like for James, like many 70's soft rock artists, has only increased the past few years. James' lone song in the top 1000.
889. A BOY NAMED SUE-Johnny Cash(69)(#2-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD)
One of the best country crossover hits ever. Fine silly story song recorded at San Quentin prison, catch the edit of "son of a b!tch"--originally I thought the expletive was even worse!
888. GOODY TWO SHOES-Adam Ant(83)(#12-B'board, #1-3 wks-DJD)
Yet another chick magnet, especially in the UK, where he later became an actor. LOVED this right outta the box, the fierce drumming is KILLER! Another Indian-styled tribal dance to go! BOOM! BOOM!
887. MY LOVIN' (YOU'RE NEVER GONNA GET IT)-En Vogue(92)(#2-B'board, #7-DJD)
Somehow, I always associate this smash with the early Jay Leno era of the Tonight Show. Solid hip-hop groove, excellent vocals as usual. "And I'm out the door!"
886. GLORY DAYS-Bruce Springsteen(85)(#5-B'board, #5-DJD)
Classic smash from the legendary "Born in the U.S.A." album. First heard this at summer camp a whole year before the single release, has always been one of my faves from the album. Love that organ!
885. WHY-Frankie Avalon(59/60)(#1-1 wk-B'board, #1-1 wk-DJD)
First of his 2 #1's in the top 1000. Rather fluffy, but I still love it. Usually quoted as Billboard's last #1 of the 50's (It was #1 on the December 28, 1959 chart), Casey Kasem played it on one show as the first #1 of the 60's (The chart was actually the week ending January 2, 1960). Love that female voice in the second verse!
884. MAKE IT WITH YOU-Bread(70)(#1-1 wk-B'board, #1-1 wk-DJD)
Their first hit, and only #1 hit. David Gates has one of the most pleasing vocals ever. Known this most of my life, super strings arrangement. Sometimes I like to pretend it has a false ending, and I love that "lip smacking" (or whatever it is) sound right before the fade!
883. JOHNNY ANGEL-Shelley Fabares(62)(#1-2 wks-B'board, #1-1 wk-DJD)
Unlike many people, I LOVE this one! This HOT actress (daughter of Nanette Fabray), of the Donna Reed Show fame really has a nice voice! Nice earthly chimes proliferate the tune, as well as another great string arrangement, complete with bow plucking. Sweet!
882. TARZAN BOY-Baltimora(86)(#13-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD)
I will NEVER get sick of this! It had been on the chart more than two months, but LOVED it when it hit the American top 40, and it's never looked back. Used in a Listerine commercial and one of the "Turtles" movies, it hit my top 3 again in '93, and because of 1999's "Tarzan" movie, it made my chart a third time in '99. Some tunes never die. Born Jimmy McShane in Ireland, he succumbed to AIDS in 1995--RIP.
881. SLOW HAND-Pointer Sisters(81)(#2-B'board, #2-DJD)
The trio's biggest Billboard hit, and more easy-going than most of their other hits. Much played in the summer '81 when went to summer camp for the first time--originally thought the current group was a quartet, learned from this hit they were only a trio (Bonnie left in 1978).
880. LITTLE JEANNIE-Elton John(80)(#3-B'board, #3-DJD)
One of the legend's biggest hits ever, nice light fare. The ending could have been shorter, otherwise a great tune. "I want you to be my acrobat..." HUH?
879. BAD MEDICINE-Bon Jovi(88)(#1-2 wks-B'board, #3-DJD)
First of the New Jersey rockers' 3 in the top 1000, and the biggest not from "Slippery When Wet". Again, I knew this would be a biggie when I first heard it. Long ending only, PLEASE! "I wanna do it again, Wait a minute!"
878. PLEASANT VALLEY SUNDAY-Monkees(67)(#3-B'board, #2-DJD)
First of their FIVE in my top 1000! Always loved listening to these guys' music, especially their hits. Written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin, they never sounded so psychedelic on a hit tune! Could be one of my theme songs, I love living in the suburbs! Cool ending!
877. BEGINNINGS-Chicago(69/71)(#7-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD)
Originally fron their debut album, it's another of their best! Of their 4 in the top 1000, the only one with Peter Cetera not on lead vocal. No single edit, in fact the FULL percussion outro is HIP to the MAX! WOO!!!! Oh yeah, and WAY COOL horns!
876. OUR DAY WILL COME-Ruby & the Romantics(63)(#1-1 wk-B'board, #1-1 wk-DJD)
What a song! As klong as I can remember, one of my all-time faves I've always called an "oldie". Fab singing by Ruby Nash, fine backup from four guys. OUTSTANDING bossa nova rhythm with an unmatched organ and a chiming keyboard instrument called a "celesta".Forever in my top 1000--Hip hip Hooray!!!!
Yes indeed, more is to come!
900. BECAUSE I LOVE YOU (THE POSTMAN SONG)-Stevie B(90)(#1-4 wks-B'board, #14-DJD)
