After a brief pause, let's go 'round again!
875. I WANT YOU TO WANT ME (live)-Cheap Trick(79)(#7-B'board, #3-DJD)
Starting off today with one of the best ever! Even if I WASN'T a Trickie fan, I'd still LOVE this spirited rocker! This belongs at EVERY party and get-together I go to! 12,000 screaming Budakon fans can't be wrong! Wooooo!!!
874. WILD ONE-Bobby Rydell(60)(#2-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD)
Oh yeah! This sax-inflicted early pop-rocker's always a solid winner! Dig those chicks singing back-up! The teen idol's highest on the list.
873. STEP BY STEP-New Kids on the Block(90)(#1-3 wks-B'board, #1-1 wk-DJD)
This song proves my list has a lot of variety! Even more bubblegummy than Bobby Rydell. Remember their proposed endorsement for "Coke magic cans" in the summer '90? (It flopped because people drank the "bad liquid" in the winning cans.) Yes, you can breathe easier--the Boston guys' biggest of all in the list!
872. SHE BLINDED ME WITH SCIENCE-Thomas Dolby(83)(#5-B'board, #4-DJD)
A most quintessential 80's pop/synth tune, the song was all over top 40 radio and the video was all over MTV. The shorter remix, which appears on quite a few of my CD compilations, is the preferred version for me (over the original album and single version). This week 20 years ago, it was one of my faves, and it still is today.
871. CONTROL-Janet Jackson(86/87)(#5-B'board, #2-DJD)
Another 80's winner! That unforgettable video (CRASH!) was A1! One of my all-time faves of her, made me forget about Michael for a time... ;D One of the 80's best R & B albums as well.
870. BLACK WATER-Doobie Brothers(74/75)(#1-1 wk-B'board, #4-DJD)
Big classic from the "What were once vices..." album. Most important is the acapella near the end--SOOOOOO GROOVY! I love it. Their 3rd highest on my list (the highest 2 were both NON-top 10 hits!).
869. A HORSE WITH NO NAME-America(72)(#1-3 wks-B'board, #4-DJD)
Not my fave of theirs, yet I remember it well from my childhood. For some odd reason, I wanted to think the artist was Lobo. Now most music fans today say it sounded like Neil Young. One of the best debut albums in history as well.
868. BABY BABY-Amy Grant(91)(#1-3 wks-B'board, #7-DJD)
Another lite-rock staple, this from the First Lady of Christian music. Though a poppy tune through and through, there are definitely gospel influences. In honor of her newborn daughter Millie. My fave of hers!
867. YESTERDAY-Beatles(65)(#1-4 wks-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD)
"Scrambled eggs" LOL! Timeless-what else to say. Over 2000 versions have been recorded--maybe Paul's finest achievement in writing and singing. Although not my very biggest fave, and only two months in the top 40, this well deserves a top 1000 berth. Their first of THIRTEEN #1's in my top 1000!
866. A FIFTH OF BEETHOVEN-Walter Murphy & the Big Apple Band(76)(#1-1 wk-B'board, #4-DJD)
Discofied adaptation of one of the most popular classical music pieces. Big fave of most of my family. Also made it to the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack; this tune needed 16 weeks from its top 40 debut to reach the zenith; a record at the time.
865. PEG-Steely Dan(77-78)(#11-B'board, #3-DJD)
When this first came out, I had NO idea what this song was about (let alone the title), but I've always LOVED the groove! And today, it's my fave tune of theirs to listen to; hope to get the CD version of the box set (I have the cassette version) and several studio albums REAL soon!
864. BREATHE AGAIN-Toni Braxton(93/94)(#3-B'board, #15-DJD)
I thought this tune would NEVER go away in early '94. It was nice, but then it got tiring. Still, I like listening to her debut album in small doses today. Not many good talents since.
863. UP WHERE WE BELONG-Joe C*cker & Jennifer Warnes(82)(#1-3 wks-B'board, #11-DJD)
Oscar-winning tune from "An Officer and a Gentleman". Never a huge fan of the tune, but it's a nice listen every once in a while. My parents can't STAND Joe's voice!
862. WHATCHA GONNA DO?-Pablo Cruise(77)(#6-B'board, #3-DJD)
Ahh...more AM radio memories! One of my earliest REAL top 3 songs ever, that pop/rock groove is so wonderful! And today, I LOVE those guitar solos! Cory Lerios, Dan Jenkins and Co. are some of the best 70's soft rockers (Palm tree logo!) Have their 2 biggest albums on vinyl, and hope to get them on CD soon. The San Francisco group's lone top 1000 entry.
861. HOLD ME-Fleetwood Mac(82)(#4-B'board, #3-DJD)
Though not their best-remembered tune today, it's still on their 2-CD set of hits, and one of their biggest. Cute piano intro, another fine Buckingham-C. McVie singalong!
860. TO SIR WITH LOVE-Lulu(67)(#1-5 wks-B'board, #7-DJD)
Until recently, not a big fave of mine. A long time ago, this always showed up on the big all-time countdowns, but since it's not really big on today's oldies stations, I never hear it on countdowns any longer. Still, a real nice movie tune with charm.
859. TO KNOW HIM IS TO LOVE HIM-Teddy Bears(58)(#1-3 wks-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD)
Phil Spector was still a teenager when he wrote and produced this wonderful love ballad. Group consisted of Phil, Marshall Leib, and DARLING Annette Kleinbard (later "Rocky" songwriter Carol Connors).
858. BILLY, DON'T BE A HERO-Bo Donaldson & the Heywoods(74)(#1-2 wks-B'board, #4-DJD)
A tune that many people would love to forget! Simple story line of Civil War times--man forgets woman's pleas of not going to war, dies for his country, and woman thows the "hero" letter away. But that cheese is still a guilty pleasure--now and then!
857. GIRL YOU KNOW IT'S TRUE-Milli Vanilli(89)(#2-B'board, #2-DJD)
You've heard the story a lot. But who REALLY knew besides Arsenio in '89? The song had a KILLER modern "hip hop" groove, and didn't even know what "Rob and Fab" looked like till I got out of Ohio college in May '89! As far as the countdown goes, cheese led to CHEESE! So bad it's good!
856. STUCK WITH YOU-Huey Lewis & the News(86)(#1-3 wks-B'board, #5-DJD)
Known to many as "Happy to be stuck with you". Not monstrously crazy over it on release (just starting 11th grade), but still one of the band's best releases, hearing all their tunes today. At least a couple more of their songs coming!
855. MAGIC MAN-Heart(76)(#9-B'board, #1-1 wk-DJD)
One of my fave rock tunes in my pre-teen years, heard this a lot on FM (top 40 and rock), not much on AM. It's always been my fave from the Seattle band! "Try to understand!"
854. 99 LUFTBALLONS-Nena(84)(#2-B'board, #3-DJD)
The song that got me wanting to take high school German! Seriously! The title means "air balloons", not "love" or "red" (as many people thought, hearing the English version). Fierce rockin' pop beat, Nena (the lady Gabrielle Koerner) was quite hot! One of my top 1-hit wonders on the list (only HOT 100 appearance).
853. IN THE YEAR 2525-Zager & Evans(69)(#1-6 wks-B'board, #8-DJD)
One 1-hit wonder leads to another! The all-time biggest one on Billboard, in fact. And a song of nuclear war leads to a pessimistic look into the future. The Nebraska man both sang and played guitar. Not great, but listworthy!
852. HEAVEN MUST HAVE SENT YOU-Bonnie Pointer(79)(#11-B'board, #6-DJD)
One of my all-time fave disco songs (70sChild will agree!), it's a remake of an obscure Elgins song. This Pointer sister went solo on Motown and had a great slice of AM pop pleasure. Didn't even know there was a slower "jazzy" version until 1987; that version appears on Rhino's "Radio Daze" series (out of print). Made my top 20 in both 1979 and 1987.
851. 9 TO 5-Dolly Parton(81)(#-2 wks-B'board, #4-DJD)
Popular movie, popular song! What much else to say? Lots of plays at roller skating parties!
More on the way!
875. I WANT YOU TO WANT ME (live)-Cheap Trick(79)(#7-B'board, #3-DJD)
