At the encouragement of Sat, I've decided to start a new little feature.
Last year I started burning cds that I called Childhood Soundtrack Volumes. I basically started in 1975 and did a cd filled with 20 or so songs that were an important part of my life/childhood memories that specific year. My plan was to burn cds all the way through 1989. So far I've only done cds through 1980.
Now my idea is to do a list of 40 songs a week for each year and have people comment on them. Here’s the first installment. The songs are ranked by favorites, how much I heard them during that year, and how important a role they played in my life at the time. I grew up in a musical family (my mom was in a cover band that played in the DC area) and so there was always someone singing, evenings spent around the piano in front of the fire with everyone performing etc. I'll be mentioning a lot of this in these posts - so be warned (I hope it's not boring).
I'm starting from the bottom of the list for 1975. Expect 2 more installments for this year tomorrow and Friday. I appreciate all comments and feedback.
43. “Pack’d My Bags” – Rufus & Chaka Kahn – From the great album Rufusized. I have vivid memories of this album’s cover; a great b&w photo of the band where they look like they’re having the best time! This song is one that my mom would sing around the house.
42. “Shades of Scarlett Conquering” – Joni Mitchell – From the infamous Hissing of Summer Lawns album. Joni was massacred by critics for this offering and if you’re not a die-hard Joni fan it’s hard to get into. But this song has always been one of my favorite melodies from her.
41. "Listen To What The Man Said" – Wings – I have strong memories of this always being on the radio in my house.
40. "Low Rider" - War - This could be heard from all of the cars that drove through my neighborhood.
39. “All By Myself" - Eric Carmen – This sounds kind of annoying to me now, but back then my grandma loved this song and would play it on the piano all the time.
38. "Only Yesterday" - Carpenters – A really gorgeous song that I never hear anymore but it was sung a lot around the house.
37. “Sailing” – Rod Stewart – From the Atlantic Crossing album. One of the first songs that I learned the notes and words to play/sing on my own.
36. “Still Crazy After All These Years” – Paul Simon – From the album of the same name which my parents loved.
35. "How Long" – Ace – I remember hearing this one in the car a bunch. Why didn’t this band have more hits?
34. “This Will Be" - Natalie Cole – Another one that my mom and grandma would sing.
33. “Bad Sneakers” – Steely Dan – From the classic Katy Lied album. This band was a fixture in the household.
32. "Songbird" - The Bee Gees – A lesser known ballad by them that my mom liked to sing as a sort of lullaby for me.
31. "It's A Miracle" - Barry Manilow – Did anyone else dance around their living room in their pajamas to this tune?

Cool feature! Let's see... 43. Don't recall this. 42. I like Joni's music, but can't place this. 41. First 1975 memory here we share! 40. Don't recall this one much back then, but it's good stuff today. 39. Earthly pretty. 38. Like most Carpenters tunes; LOTS of AM radio play that even lite FM stations hardly play today. 37. HUGE UK hit that I've hardly ever heard. 36. Great album, great song. 35. Don't remember this one TOO much from 1975, but it's aged nicely; even lots of oldies play in my area! 34. Great one! My mom dislikes it, and I've hardly ever heard it on the radio (then and now). 33. The Dan! They never had a bad one! 32. I should look into this. 31. Great upbeat selection from Barry! Hmmm...who might be coming up...Captain & Tennille, Glen Campbell, Silver Convention ;D, Morris Albert!?!

Alright, lemme see......There are several I don't know, but that is what makes it so interesting and different from my list! 43-42. Don't know em, but I like the artists! 41. Love it. Quite possibly, Paul's best number 1. Love the spoken intro on Venus and Mars. 40. A classic I am a bit tired of. 39. A good one, better than the cover version. 38-37. Know em by title only. 36. Great title, better than the song itself. 35. One of several reasons 1975 is one of the top years of the rock-n-roll era! Can Carrack do any wrong? "But I can't help but have my suspicions, cuz I'm not quite as dumb as I seem." Great line. 34. Actually a good song! 33. A classic from Steely. Katy Lied is such a great album! 32. Don't know it. 31. My second fave from Barry. SUCH childhood memories! So far, so good!

The title of the thread caught my attention right away so I had to check this out! Excellent post 43. Don't know it . The only Rufus tune I've ever heard is Tell Me Something Good. 42. Album title is familiar and so is Joni But I' m not familiar with the album. 41.Among Sir Paul's best. Great saxaphone solo by Tom Scott. Bought the single and played it regularly back in '75 and recieved the Venus and Mars album that December for my birthday. 40. Loved it then and love it now. One of their very best . My classic rock station plays it often. 39.I'm a huge fan of The Raspberries and love Eric's vocal. Why oh why did Mariah have to cover this ? 38. I'm more famliar with the early stuff - We've Only Just Begun etc. 37. Can't remember where I first heard this. It might have been from my neighbor back then she really liked Rod at that time. I have this on his box set. Pretty tune. 36. One of my big faves of Paul's 35.Had this on a Ktel album at the time (still own it, and I have it on CD as well) my brother's band did a cover of this in the late 70's - I remember my brother asking me if he could borrow the album. Superb tune - Paul can sing anything 34. I actually didn't mind this. Another 70's tune I first heard courtesy of the fine people at K-tel 33.My oldest brother was a huge fan of "The Dan" and bought every album as soon as it was released so I heard and enjoyed Donald and Walter's music very much. 32. Yeah this is a good one! 31. I bought two Manilow 45's as a kid Mandy and this one. I really liked it. it was catchy!

43. “Pack’d My Bags” – Rufus & Chaka Kahn I don't know this, but I really like their hits from that period.
42. “Shades of Scarlett Conquering” – Joni Mitchell I'd be interested in checking this out. She has a very unique style.
41. "Listen To What The Man Said" – Wings I remember hearing this a lot that summer. Always loved it.
40. "Low Rider" - War Great one from them, very funky.
39. “All By Myself" - Eric Carmen One of my faves of Eric's - great piano and lyrics.
38. "Only Yesterday" - Carpenters One of their best, but I never hear this on the radio either.
37. “Sailing” – Rod Stewart I've heard this only a few times - can't quite place the melody.
36. “Still Crazy After All These Years” – Paul Simon – A song that's really grown on me. I think Karen Carpenter covered this when she was working on her solo album in 1979.
35. "How Long" – Ace Lots of memories of this one. GREAT 70s pop.
34. “This Will Be" - Natalie Cole My favorite of Natalie's.
33. “Bad Sneakers” – Steely Dan You can't go wrong with Steely Dan. A classic.
32. "Songbird" - The Bee Gees Love the Main Course album.
31. "It's A Miracle" - Barry Manilow My favorite Barry Manilow song.

39.I'm a huge fan of The Raspberries and love Eric's vocal. Why oh why did Mariah have to cover this ? Has Mariah done a version too? I know that Celine Dion did a really scary cover. Thanks for your comments!

Cool idea, Kat! Well, I was 12 years old in '75. Let's see how many memories I can conjure up. Pack'd My Bags--Don't think I know this one. Shades of Scarlett Conquering--For some reason, I was never into Joni much. I don't know this song. Listen to What the Man Said--Pretty good song. Low Rider--Love this one. Very cool song. All By Myself--Love the lyrics to this. Seems like everybody on the face of the earth has covered it. Only Yesterday--I'm a Carpenters fan from way back. This is a great song. Sailing--Wow! I had almost forgotten about this song. Absolutely bee-yoo-ti-ful. I like it a lot! Still Crazy After All These Years--I had a t-shirt that said that. I loved that shirt. Wore it to school all the time. I think people were beginning to think I WAS crazy. LOL! How Long--Haven't heard this song in a long time. This Will Be--Good song. I liked singing along to it, although I could never quite keep up with Natalie on the really fast part. LOL! Bad Sneakers---Not familiar with it. Songbird--Don't know it. It's a Miracle--A friend of mine was crazy about Barry, so I heard this, and a lot of other songs of his quite a bit. This is one that I can tolerate by him.

This sounds like a fun feature, but I don't know many of these songs!
43 - 41. Don't know them.
40. There's probably not another Low Rider song, so I'll assume this is the one our local radio station plays all the time in commercials for this car place. I like it!
39. Is the same song that Celine Dion covered? It's a very beautiful song, but one I don't hear all that much.
38. Wish I knew this one. I've heard a lot of good things about it, and I love The Carpenters.
37 - 35. Not familiar with these.
34. LOVE this one! Natalie Cole has a wonderful voice. It's obvious where she got her talent.
33 - 31. Never heard them.

Hey Kitty. Glad you're doing this feature.
OK.. let's see:
43. “Pack’d My Bags” – Rufus & Chaka Kahn – Don't know this
42. “Shades of Scarlett Conquering” – Joni Mitchell Don't know this either. In general, the only objection I had to some of Joni's music is her tendency to pack too many words into too few notes. Other than that I usually enjoy her music.
41. "Listen To What The Man Said" – Wings – Paul & Co. kept cranking out these unique hits. They certainly didn't suffer from the syndrome that other (shall we say less talented) bands had where every song sounds alike. I Like this one a lot.
40. "Low Rider" - War - Not bad, but not my fave.
39. “All By Myself" - Eric Carmen - I love Eric's voice both with the Raspberries and solo. This one dragged a little too much for me though. Of his solos I prefer Never Gonna Fall In Love Again and Make Me Lose Control.
38. "Only Yesterday" - Carpenters – I haven't thought of this song for a long time. It seems to have slipped behind their other hits. Good song.
37. “Sailing” – Rod Stewart – Not familiar with it..
36. “Still Crazy After All These Years” – Paul Simon – I'm not that crazy (no pun intended) about most of Paul's solo stuff. This is so-so.
35. "How Long" – Ace – I like this one. Good question, why no more hits? I remember hearing their album Five A Side a few times back then, and liked it - but never bought it.
34. “This Will Be" - Natalie Cole – Pretty good.
33. “Bad Sneakers” – Steely Dan – Don't remember this song.
32. "Songbird" - The Bee Gees – Don't know this one either. - But this one I will check out.
31. "It's A Miracle" - Barry Manilow – Don't really care for Barry's up-tempo songs (except for Copacabana).

This is a cool idea, Kat. I've been out of it - started working 50 hour weeks 2 weeks ago and it's only gonna get worse from here until Christmas.
Let's see.....
43) Not familiar. I know the artist but not the song. 42) Again, know the artist but not the song. 41) Great song! 40) Loved it once, but I'm tired of it. 39) I agree with you, but it's got a killer piano part. 38) I know Yesterday Once More, but not this one. 37) I know a Sailing but not this one. 36) Great song too! 35) Not too bad. 34) Not familiar. 33) I have the song, but haven't listened to it. 32) It's ok. 31) It's ok.
