If you could only list 3 bands that defined the 70's for you...what would they be?
Here are mine:
1. Paul McCartney and Wings: One of the first albums I ever bought was Paul McCartney. Maybe I'm Amazed, Band On The Run, Jet, Junior's Farm, Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey, Live And Let Die, With A Little Luck and Coming Up are some of my favorites.
2. Elton John- It seems like in the 70's he came out with a new album every month. I love Tiny Dancer, Your Song, Madman Across The Water, Bennie and The Jets, Someone Saved My Life Tonight, Levon and Blue Eyes.
3. ABBA- Hello, my name is athompsen, and I'm an ABBA fan. I saw the musical "Mama Mia" when it was in town last weekend and I had had so much fun...it really took me back. I was singing along to every song! Some of my favorites are; Knowing Me Knowing You, Take A Chance On Me, Voulez Vous, Does Your Mother Know, and SOS.
Honorable mention: The Bee Gees... I had a hard time between them and ABBA. Saturday Night Fever is one of my all time favorite soundtracks.

I would probably say Wings, Bee Gees and ELO. They are the groups I heard the most in the 70's.
I'd add a punk band, but I didn't know punk rock in the 70's (didn't get into it until my late teens).

Paul McCartney - I'd have to agree - his solo stuff especially from Ram, Band on The Run and Venus and Mars were heard almost everyday it seemed at our house . Faves include - Hi Hi Hi , Helen Wheels , Listen To What The Man Said , Too Many People ,Every Night , Live and Let Die and Maybe I'm Amazed

DAMN, if you don't come up with good topics, Andrea!
My list is similiar to Pete's. In fact, I thought about including the Bee Gees, but changed my mind. There is a better rep for me, plus it gives a little variety here. (BTW-it's the pre-disco love songs from the Bee Gees that speak the 70's to me)
Paul McCartney-This guy was everywhere. Has to be the most successful solo act of the 70's. My dad had the McCartney album, Wings Over America, plus a slew of singles. Wonderful memories, even singles as late as With a Little Luck and Goodnight Tonight. Remember playing the latter 45 often on Saturday nights.
E.L.O.-I have stated numerous times that we had A New World Record, and it got more airplay than anything in our house. Very haunting record, I used to love it and fear it at once! Of course, throw Evil Woman, Sweet Talkin' Woman and Turn to Stone in there for good measure.
Chicago-Again, we had the CTA album. Lots of play as well. The singles bring back memories of summer. Just You-n-Me, Wishing You Were Here, Call on Me, etc.
Honorable mentions-Bee Gees, Bread Seals & Crofts. For whatever reason, these lighter acts hold more memories than super group artists like Fleetwood Mac, Doobies and Steve Miller.

1. Fleetwood Mac - During the 70s, one of my favorite groups. Would buy anything Fleetwood Mac.
2. Waylon & Willie - Loved the outlaw country. Again, if I saw Waylon or Willie albums or cassette, I got them.
3. Abba - Yes I was an Abba fan as well. Probably one the most commercially successful bands of the 70s.

I would choose:
1. Paul McCartney/Wings - He had an incredible string of hits throughout the 70s, and so many of those songs take me back to a specific time when I hear them.
2. Bee Gees - Another group I heard quite a bit of back then, and I love practically all of their music. I bought a number of their 45s back then (I remember I had to wait a little while to get 'Stayin' Alive' - the store kept selling out of them), and their Greatest album in 1979, which is still one of my favorite albums of all time.
3. Chicago - No question, this group made some outstanding music in the 70s. The radio stations here in the late 70s-early 80s concentrated mainly on the top 40 and didn't often play older hits, but Chicago seemed to be an exception. Lots of memories of their songs.
Some other artists: ELO, Bread, Seals & Crofts, Elton John, Firefall, Captain & Tennille, Doobie Brothers, Fleetwood Mac.

A great, but hard to answer question for me. My list is similar to everyone elses too.
The Bee Gees - A quintessential key part of my musical childhood.
Steely Dan - Another group that I can't imagine the 70s without.
Wings - A staple in the house of my youth and their songs always make me nostalgic.
It was hard narrowing it down to just 3 - other contenders are: Elton John, Journey, Barry Manilow, Boz Scaggs, Fleetwood Mac
