Man, this post get buried FAST!
Stumbled on this by accident, I was gonna continue my critique on my top 25 artists, then came across this!
1. LED ZEPPELIN - STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN
On rock stations, this should ALWAYS be #1.
2. EAGLES - HOTEL CALIFORNIA
This should always rank top 10.
3. DEREK & THE DOMINOS - LAYLA
Seems a little high, but usually in the top 50.
4. BEATLES - HEY JUDE
No question this should be their biggest.
5. LYNYRD SKYNYRD - FREEBIRD
Another strong winner, even if all the stations play the 10 minute version.
6. QUEEN BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY
Freddie's death has only made this even bigger.
7. JOHN LENNON- IMAGINE
A little high, but great.
8. ROLLING STONES- SATISFACTION
Of 60's tunes, this and Light My Fire should always be way up.
9. BEATLES- YESTERDAY
Timeless and pretty.
10. BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN- BORN TO RUN
Found in most top 25's, and still my fave Boss tune.
11. DON MCLEAN- AMERICAN PIE
Not through-and-through rock, but this is always up high for those who play it on coundowns.
12. BEATLES- LET IT BE
Not one of my top 10 of theirs, but still great.
13. ELTON JOHN- FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND/LOVE LIES BLEE
Sorry. Yuck. This always bored me to tears, and the only one from "GYBR" I don't rave over.
14. ROLLING STONES- SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL
Too high. That "woo woo" can get annoying.
15. BILLY JOEL- PIANO MAN
Great classic, though won't ever quite place in my top 1000.
16. PINK FLOYD- WISH YOU WERE HERE
THIS is their biggest? NO WAY! Higher than "Money", "Brick", or "Numb"? Man I'm shocked.
17. ROLLING STONES- YOU CAN'T ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU WANT
Great, but not top 1000 worthy for me.
18. KANSAS- CARRY ON WAYWARD SON
Yeah!
19. MEATLOAF- PARADISE BY THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS
Too high. But cute ditty.
20. AEROSMITH- DREAM ON
This always belongs up high.
21. BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD- FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH
Wonderful tune.
22. PINK FLOYD- COMFORTABLY NUMB
Of their non-singles, their best. Absolutely pretty and deserved of the top 100.
23. BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN- THUNDER ROAD
Although "Born to run" is a GREAT album, this is up a little high.
24. BOB SEGER- TURN THE PAGE
Yes! Cool!
25. ROD STEWART- MAGGIE MAY
His best in album rock circles.
26. DOORS- LIGHT MY FIRE
Not top 10? You're not forgiven, 96.5.
27. PHIL COLLINS- IN THE AIR TONIGHT
An 80's classic.
28. FLEETWOOD MAC- RHIANNON
Great tune.
29. THE WHO- WON'T GET FOOLED AGAIN
On Syracuse's 95X countdown, this was ALWAYS in the top 5. Solid tune.
30. BEATLES- SGT. PEPPER/DAY IN THE LIFE
Another fine gem.
31. AEROSMITH- SWEET EMOTION
The 70's was their decade! But higher than "Walk this way"?
32. PINK FLOYD- ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL
Forever top 100 all around.
33. LED ZEPPELIN- BLACK DOG
Hits it hard!
34. STEPPENWOLF- BORN TO BE WILD
Another top-notch winner!
35. PINK FLOYD- MONEY
Always up high.
36. BEATLES- COME TOGETHER
Another of their best.
37. BOSTON- FOREPLAY/LONG TIME
Higher than "More than a feeling"? Still, it's GREAT.
38. ERIC CLAPTON- WONDERFUL TONIGHT
A little high, but unforgettable.
39. YES- I'VE SEEN ALL GOOD PEOPLE
Wonderful!
40. BOSTON- MORE THAN A FEELING
One of the best rock songs ever recorded.
41. CREEDENCE CLEARWATER- HAVE YOU EVER SEEN THE RAIN
This is CCR's highest? A tad surprised.
42. VAN MORRISON- BROWN EYED GIRL
La dee dah! Usually top-notch rock classics originally came from big, popular, classic albums, but the album this originally came off of only hit like #180.
43. U 2- PRIDE (IN THE NAME OF LOVE)
Yes! My fave is their biggest here!
44. CREAM- WHITE ROOM
Oh yeah!
45. JOHN MELLENCAMP- LONELY OL' NIGHT
His biggest, over "Jack and Diane"? Hmmm...
46. ROLLING STONES- ANGIE
Wonderfully done, their best ballad.
47. BAD COMPANY- BAD COMPANY
Good tune, but they've had even better.
48. STEPPENWOLF- MAGIC CARPET RIDE
Woo hoo!
49. PINK FLOYD- TIME
Yes! Another dandy from "Moon"!
50. ROLLING STONES- HONKY TONK WOMAN
One of their best!
51. ERIC CLAPTON- COCAINE
Cool!
52. PAUL MCCARTNEY- MAYBE I'M AMAZED
Great performance.
53. STEVE MILLER- ROCK'N ME
I love their music, this being no exception.
54. ROLLING STONES- JUMPIN' JACK FLASH
The Stones can do no wrong!
55. JIMI HENDRIX- ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER
Higher than "Purple Haze"? OK... Still it's SUPER.
56. JETHRO TULL- LOCOMOTIVE BREATH
WHAT!!??!! Higher than Aqua lung, Cross-eyed Mary, Past & Bungle? Shocker.
57. MOODY BLUES- NIGHTS IN WHITE SATIN
Timeless, always up high.
58. LYNYRD SKYNYRD- SWEET HOME ALABAMA
Turn it up! Another high ranker!
59. PINK FLOYD- HEY YOU
Not too bad, but The Wall has better ones...
60. LED ZEPPELIN- KASHMIR
Solid classic, great drumming from Bonzo.
61. THE WHO- BEHIND BLUE EYES
Proof that "Who's Next" rules.
62. BEATLES- SOMETHING
One of George's best songs ever.
63. ANIMALS- HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN
Early Brit Invasion classic. The organ from Alan Price is unparallelled.
64. LED ZEPPELIN- ROCK AND ROLL
Make it 3 from their "Runes" album! It rules!
65. ROLLING STONES- BEAST OF BURDEN
A little high, but no denying it's classic.
66. BAD COMPANY- FEEL LIKE MAKIN' LOVE
One of their best!
67. BOSTON- PEACE OF MIND
This makes 3 from their debut album! Wonderful!
68. MOODY BLUES- QUESTION
I love it!
69. FLEETWOOD MAC- I DON'T WANT TO KNOW
Excuse me? I don't know if this was even in my top 10,000!
70. DOOBIE BROTHERS- BLACK WATER
Fine song.
