Top 965 Classic Rock Songs of All Time

Got this link from a mailing list I belong to, and thought I'd share it here. This list of the top 965 classic rock songs was compiled by the first station in the U.S. to feature a "classic hits" format.

Any thoughts on this list - songs included, order of songs, etc.?

I looked at the list, didn't read it all though. It's too long! But I was glad to see Bohemian Rhapsody (one of my favorite rock songs) and a little Stevie on the list. Edge of Seventeen should've been higher than 128, though.

Why 965, anyway? Why didn't they just go for a thou?

Guess I have to resign myself that Stairway to Heaven is the Number 1 all time. Great song, just not my number 1.

Loved Bohemian Rapsody (#6), Carry on Wayward Son (#18), For What it's Worth (#21), Turn the Page (#24), & Have You Ever Seen The Rain (#41) rated so high.

I'll have to study the list when I have more time. Looks like a good one though.

To answer Lora's question, I think the 965 top hits has to do with where this station is on the radio dial, WKLH 96.5.

I agree about 'Edge of Seventeen' - I would have ranked it higher also. But like you, I was glad to see some of her songs on the list.

965 is kind of an unusual number, I agree. I think Woody is right about their basing it on the station's frequency.

It is a pretty long list, I agree. Although I don't agree with all their rankings, I think they did an excellent job selecting the songs to be included.

I've noticed that,too.What's worse,have you ever noticed the only Monkees songs they play are:Last Train to Clarksville,Daydream Believer,Pleasant Valley Sunday and I'm a Believer?What about Daily Nightly...or Doors into Summer.....or Sometime in the Morning?A lot of their best never gets any airtime.

I couldn't agree with you more, beatles4ever. The Monkees had so many other good songs, but on the oldies stations here they pretty much play only the ones you mentioned and occasionally 'Valleri' or 'A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You'.

On rock stations, this should ALWAYS be #1.

Of 60's tunes, this and Light My Fire should always be way up.

Timeless and pretty.

Found in most top 25's, and still my fave Boss tune.

11. DON MCLEAN- AMERICAN PIE
Not through-and-through rock, but this is always up high for those who play it on coundowns.

12. BEATLES- LET IT BE
Not one of my top 10 of theirs, but still great.

13. ELTON JOHN- FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND/LOVE LIES BLEE
Sorry. Yuck. This always bored me to tears, and the only one from "GYBR" I don't rave over.

14. ROLLING STONES- SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL
Too high. That "woo woo" can get annoying.

15. BILLY JOEL- PIANO MAN
Great classic, though won't ever quite place in my top 1000.

THIS is their biggest? NO WAY! Higher than "Money", "Brick", or "Numb"? Man I'm shocked.

Yes! My fave is their biggest here!

Oh yeah!

45. JOHN MELLENCAMP- LONELY OL' NIGHT
His biggest, over "Jack and Diane"? Hmmm...

Wonderfully done, their best ballad.

That surprised me about 'Wish You Were Here' also. It's a good song, but I'd rate all three of the other songs you mentioned higher than that one.

I would have thought 'Light My Fire' would have ranked higher also!

It was great to see 'More Than a Feeling' in the top 50, although I would have ranked it ahead of 'Foreplay/Long Time'.

CCR - I agree. I would have thought 'Proud Mary', 'Green River' or maybe 'Lodi' would have been tops.

'Time' - Absolutely love it!

Jethro Tull - I agree, definitely a shock to see 'Locomotive Breath' up that high. I rarely if ever hear it on the classic rock stations.

Fleetwood Mac - I agree! A good tune, but not one of their best - there are at least 20 songs of theirs I would have ranked above it.

If I can stick my 2 cents in....

From a "Classic Rock" standpoint, those Floyd songs not being ranked higher than Wish shocks me, but from a personal standpoint, I think it blows the other three away.

Different cities must do things differently. Locomotive Breath is HUGE here, second probably only to Aqualung. Definitely higher than Cross Eyed Mary for sure. In fact, I've seen Locomotive on Classic Rock CD offers on TV.

I Don't Want to Know is definitely high on my list!

That's a good point. The classic rock stations here don't play many Tull songs in general, but when they do it's almost always 'Aqualung' or 'Teacher'. I don't think I've ever heard any of them play 'Cross Eyed Mary', actually.
