Top 25 songs of 2003 (my list)!

[SAT-I need more room!!]

I have come up with my 25 favorite songs of 2003. This is not just new songs that came out this year, but also old songs I first heard this year.

At first, I was only going to choose a handful of tracks from Martina's album. Then I considered some facts:

1) It's the only all new album I bought in 03.

2) I genuinely LIKE all the songs. So why should I not include them all?

3) At 13 tracks, it perfectly made 25 songs when added to the other 12! ;D

So the entire is represented on here.



So here is my list. Love to see yours!


25. Times Like This-Foo Fighters
The second "single" from the One by One album. Proud to say I knew it before it went to the radio.

24. She Comes in Colours-Love
That 2 disc set was a long time coming for me. It took me awhile to get into the tracks, but there are some classics on it. This is one. Love the music on it.

23. Perfect-Sara Evans
Just now getting into this new track. I just got Bekki the CD for Christmas, so I'll be hearing it more.

22. God's Will-Martina McBride
Love all the songs, but this one is a bit slow and long, and VERY sad. Still a great song (just explaining why it's the last of hers).

21. All My Life-Foo Fighters
The first "single". To my ears, not up to the Nothing Left to Lose songs, but still good.

20. Over the Rainbow (Live)-Martina McBride
Wonderful take on the song. Ranked second to last of hers because the originals are so strong.

19. Have it All-Foo Fighters
The best of the non-radio tracks. In parts, mostly the refrain, reminds me of Learn to Fly.

18. This One's For the Girls-Martina McBride
The first single from the album. Good song, personally suffering from a bit of burnout being a fan.

17. Reluctant Daughter-Martina McBride
Martina on a very traditional, bluegrass sounding song.

16. There's More to Me Than You-Jessica Andrews
Young Jessica hasn't yet reached 21 (she just turned 20 the other day) but she has a helluva voice. This is the only track I've gotten into on the album so far.

15. Wearing White-Martina McBride
More traditional country souding stuff, with harmony vocals from Vince Gill.

14. Lady Samantha-Three Dog Night
So glad I got that 2 disc collection, otherwise I never would have heard this great Elton cover. Never have heard the original yet.

13. In My Daughter's Eyes-Martina McBride
Her current single, which is selling TONS of CD's for her. Love the singing, love the words even more.

12. How Far-Martina McBride
Martina's power vocals on this album. Probably will be a single down the line.

11. She's a Butterfly-Martina McBride
Great mid-tempo song from the album.

10. So Magical-Martina McBride
Wonderful, upbeat leadoff track on the album.

9. Dandelion-Rolling Stones
I had the More Hot Rocks for over a year before I really listened to this one. Their psychedelic stuff is underrated.

8. Softly to Me-Love
Nice, "soft" song, that Bekki calls "fruity". LOL!

7. City of Love-Martina McBride
Another uptempo song that blows me away.

6. Alone Again or-Love
One of the first songs I really paid attention too since I always heard it was a classic. And it is. Love the music on it. Sounds like bullfighting music through much of it!

5. Nobody-Three Dog Night
Early Dog tune that I learned from that same 2 disc set.

4. When You Love Me-Martina McBride
Somewhere between slow and midtempo, this song really strikes me for some reason.

3. Learning to Fall-Martina McBride
This was the sleeper on the album. For a long time, I'd look at the title and not even remember how it goes! Love it now.

2. It's For You-Three Dog Night
Before this year, the only way I knew this was Chuck Negron's version he does live. This was one of THE main reasons for getting the 2 disc set.

1. Show Me-Martina McBride
The bonus track on the album, only available at Wal-Mart. SO glad I knew that! The best song of the year. I know a few people say bonus tracks are usually weak because they weren't "good enough" to make the real album. But Martina says it wasn't part of the regular album simply because it didn't fit in well with the others. But she wanted to inlcude it in for fans. It is a huge favorite among her fans.

25.Crashpad Number - Marc Carroll - A tune that I cranked up alot this summer! - It was included on Uncut Magazine's "19 tracks Inspired by The Byrds" CD. Such a great tune.I'm planning on getting one of his CD's in the near future.


24.I Still Have Dreams - Richie Furay - A tune that Dawn listed in one of her "lost" posts. I listened to the audio sample and was hooked right away. I was very happy to have been able to find an mp3 file of it.


23.Roll Over DJ - Jet - I first heard this on Little Steven's Underground Garage Radio show. He played it lots . Jet are from Australia.

22.For You - Adriana Balic - An exceptional song from her '99 debut. One of the sweetest ballads I've ever heard . Simple production - just her piano and vocals and that's all it needs.

21.I Can Hear You Calling - Three Dog Night - The dog's get funky! - A big fave!


20.Mr. Saboteur - The Yardbirds - From their 2003 Birdland CD and one that spent plenty of time in my player. This is one of the many highlights with some killer harmonica from Alan Glen.

19.Eye To Eye - Joan Jett - Another track heard on The Underground Garage radio program. I'd never heard this before but I loooove it!

18.Man in The Corner Shop - The Jam - Paul and the guys had some cool tunes and this is easily one of them.

17.A Great Disguise - Martina McBride - I love the way she sings this - wonderful - nice melody too.

16.I Think Therefore I Rock and Roll - Ringo Starr - The man can still boogie! Great feel good tune.

15.The Rest Of My Life - Sloan - They just get better and better with each album. A great slice of pop.

14.Nothing's Changed - The Zombies - I can't believe how underappreciated these guys were in the 60's. I just discovered this , this year - brilliant.

13.The Perfect Size - Jon Auer - While browsing for songs to download this popped up . Jon is from The Seattle pop band The Posies - So catchy!

12. Who Invited You - The Donnas - Yet another track heard on The Underground Garage. So far what I've heard by them I've liked.

11.Stumbling Through The Dark - The Jayhawks - One of the many bands I've discovered this year . A nice blend of Folk and Pop.

10.This One's For The Girls - Martina McBride - I loved it the second I heard it ! Woo Hoo Cute video as well.

9.Hard Road - Sam Roberts - I believe this was the second single released from his album - A fellow Canadian - and another winner.

8.Radiation Vibe - Fountains of Wayne - This is from their debut album. I was humming it for days after hearing it.

7.High School - The MC5 - You guessed it Adam - another tune played on the Underground Garage and the only other tune of their's I know other than Kick Out The Jams. A real infectious song.

6.The Size of A Cow - Wonderstuff - Ron played this on his Crap From The Past radio show . It's so good!

5.Stay Away - Rooney - More cool 60's inspired pop. Not sure what the rest of the CD is like but this rocks!

4.Take Me With U - Marshall Crenshaw - Marshall covers Prince ! and makes the song his own - I have no idea what Prince's version sounds like . From Marshall's super 2003 CD - What's in The Bag?

3.Bright Future in Sales - Fountains of Wayne - It's hard to believe how many catchy hooks they cram into one song.

2. Valley Winter Song - Fountains of Wayne - brilliant

1.Stacey's Mom -Fountains of Wayne- It's nice to see them FINALLY get the recognition they deserve . And it nice to hear some good music on the radio for a change.

'Dandelion' is such a cool song! Definitely one of my Stones faves!

1. Gypsy - Moody Blues

First heard this on Music Choice's Classic Rock channel back in the spring, and loved it right away. This is a superb song, with wonderful vocals and a dreamy, melancholy arrangement.

2. Til I Die - Beach Boys

Up until this past year, I was a casual Beach Boys fan - I knew the hits, but not much past that. Pete's posts on YL and here on the Click inspired me to check out their music in more depth, and am I glad I did! What a powerful song - love it!

3. Song of the Evergreens - Chicago

As we talked about on PMs, I'd had the Chicago VII for years, but had never listened to it all the way through. Your INSANE list inspired me to give this one a listen, and it quickly became a favorite!

4. Byblos - Chicago

Another great cut from Chicago VII, that I checked out after seeing it on the INSANE list. Outstanding!

5. Surf's Up - Beach Boys

Loved this from first listen! Beautifully arranged and produced - one of their best. I've played this quite a few times - it sounds great in the 5.1 surround sound on the Endless Harmony DVD.

6. Future Games - Fleetwood Mac

An excellent early cut that I first heard on the Music Choice Classic Rock channel.

7. Europa - Santana

Heard this one on Netscape Internet Radio's Psychedelic channel. Great!

8. Rock & Roll Stew - Traffic

This has since become my favorite Traffic cut. Love it!

9. It's About Time - Beach Boys

This great rocker is one of the reasons I love the Sunflower CD so much.

10. My Eyes Have Seen You - Doors

Another tune I first heard on Netscape's Psychedelic channel.

11. One of My Turns - Pink Floyd

I can't figure out why classic rock stations ignore their earlier songs. This one is great!

12. Whiskey Train - Procol Harum

A really nice song that I heard on the Music Choice Classic Rock channel.

13. Concrete Angel - Martina McBride

I first heard this on CMT, on the video. Such an emotional song, and Martina's vocals are flawless on it.

14. The Game of Love - Santana with Michelle Branch

I'm not too fond of recent top 40 songs in general, but really liked this one. For some reason, it reminds me of late 70s music.

15. Ride the Tiger - Jefferson Starship

Another song I first heard on Music Choice's Classic Rock channel. I hope to get this one on CD soon.

16. Old Man Took - America

I picked up Holiday used on vinyl last year, and this is one of my favorite cuts from it. I was disappointed that it wasn't included on the new Complete Greatest Hits Collection.

17. Fresh Air - Quicksilver Messenger Service

I'd heard 'What About Me' a few years back, but wasn't familiar with this one until early last year. Both of those are great.

18. Slip On Through - Beach Boys

One of my favorites from Sunflower. Dennis was really coming into his own as a writer.

19. Woman of 1000 Years - Fleetwood Mac

Another wonderful early Mac cut I heard on the Music Choice Classic Rock channel. I'd love to find a greatest hits CD of their early 70s material.

20. Never Without You - Ringo Starr

This was played on Beatle Brunch when Ringorama was first released. Love the references to the Beatles songs George wrote.

21. I've Got a Feeling (We'll Be Seeing Each Other Again) - Al Wilson

Great mid 70s soul from a very talented singer.

22. Save It for a Rainy Day - Four Tops

I've loved Stephen Bishop's version for years, but never realized the Tops had done it also! They do a really nice job with it.

23. Coloured Rain - Traffic

An excellent song from a group I've really grown to enjoy in the past year. Like 'Rock & Roll Stew', I heard this on Music Choice Classic Rock.

24. Love Reign O'er Me - Who

Really liked this when I first heard it, on one of the classic rock stations here.

25. This One's for the Girls - Martina McBride

Very nice, upbeat song from Martina that I first caught on CMT.

Some songs, like Las Ketchup are cheesy but fun.
Many others, however, are VERY underappreciated oldies, among them: Monroes (80's new wave rock), Firefall (easily their 2nd best after You are the woman), and Sagittarius (well-crafted 60's pop/rock that should have also defined the Summer of Love).
John Lennon hit big because of my personal anti-war stance.
Change and Paul Parker are two GREAT, somewhat overlooked early 80's disco tunes.
And I played Gary Wright and my Nuggets box set at a bigger rate than ever before.

But that's just it-I don't HAVE 25 songs I know from this year by a variety of artists! So I was GLAD I had half from one artist!

If you didn't listen to modern music at all, wouldn't most of your list be from that Bette album?

I can't find any Billboard year-end charts online, unless I subscribe to Billboard.com - which only about, oh, $200 for a year's subscription.

I have finally done it!!! Here's my list!! I dug through my CDs to find some 2003 tracks, then online on some top 40 lists. The rest are older songs that I first heard in '03.

25. Me Against the Music - Britney Spears featuring Madonna
As much as I hate to admit it, I like this song. I can't help it! It's just so damn catchy!

24. Love Is All We Need - Celine Dion
There was a lot of talk a while back about I Drove All Night on The Click. People were comparing it to the Cyndi Lauper version, saying how much better hers was. Well, I genuinely liked the Celine version. But out of all the songs on her 2003 album One Heart (with the exception of the recycled Have You Ever Been In Love), I liked this one best.

23. Numb - Linkin Park
My sister really loves this song, and it's sort of grown on me. Whenever they put their screaming to a minimum, Linkin Park can produce some really solid tracks, and this is one of them. It's got wonderful lyrics. Truly a great song.

22. The Voice Within - Christina Aguilera
Along the lines of Beautiful, this is one of Xtina's few quality songs, although I have to admit that I loved Dirrrty. *hangs head in shame*

21. Perfect - Sara Evans
This has the potential to be a big hit for her, but it just doesn't get enough airplay to suit me.

20. This One's For the Girls - Martina McBride
I found this song very enjoyable, but not quite the style of music I like to hear from Martina. I prefer her, um, "power ballads", or whatever you would like to call them.

19. Crazy In Love - Beyoncé
Sue me for liking her, but her songs have a great beat and a very sexy vibe. She's gonna go far if she doesn't go into overdrive in the publicity department like Britney has. That's what's killing her career. People are tired of her.

18. The First Cut Is The Deepest - Sheryl Crow
Good cover. I like the acoustic road Sheryl's taken over the past couple years. It's a good sound for her.

17. At Last - Cyndi Lauper
As I believe I posted on here, the first time I heard Cyndi sing this song, I was blown away! I had no idea she could sing like this! She put a whole new spin on this classic.

16. White Flag - Dido
I've been impressed with her voice for sometime. This is another good one.

15. Bring Me To Life - Evanescence
Great song, but it's been so run in the ground that there's no way I could give it a higher ranking than this.

14. Hey Ya - OutKast
Fun song with a great hip-hop beat. I like it very much.

13. Lovin' All Night - Patty Loveless
Another good cover. I really enjoy this one. In fact, I may get her latest album. If all of the other tracks are half this good, it's worth it.

12. It's My Life - No Doubt
Excellent.

11. Stacy's Mom - Fountains of Wayne
This is a cool song with a hilarious video. If you haven't seen it, tune in to MTV and you're sure to catch it! Well, that is if MTV's actually showing videos...

The album was 2002, but the single was 2003! Great song. I just adore Justin. He's so talented!

9. Room To Breathe - Reba McEntire
Great title track from her November release. Reba's one of my favorites, and she always will be thanks to songs like this.

8. Crazy - Patsy Cline
After receiving her greatest hits for Christmas, I sort of rediscovered this song and fell in love with it all over again. What an amazing singer.

7. My Sister - Reba McEntire
A song that I can relate to! It's about the bond between sisters. Sure it's cutesy, but it works!

6. In The Cool, Cool, Cool of The Evening - Bette Midler
This fun Rosemary Clooney song gets a makeover in Bette and Barry Manilow's hands. They did a really nice job with this jazzed up version.

5. On A Slow Boat to China - Bette Midler and Barry Manilow
Awesome duet. One of Bette's best songs out of her entire career.

4. Secret - Reba McEntire
I just love this song! All of the ingredients just mix together perfectly! This should really be released as a single.

3. Talk To Me - Stevie Nicks
First heard these top three at the tail end of 2003, but they left such a huge impression on me. The lyrics, the beat...everything...just amazing. Stevie needs to release some new material! Which I hear she's going to do after Fleetwood Mac's tour is over.

2. Rooms On Fire - Stevie Nicks
I'll put more about this on the lyrics board, where I posted the lyrics to this song.

The best of all of Stevie's songs, in my opinion. I can't really describe it. It's just so awesome though!

First heard these top three at the tail end of 2003, but they left such a huge impression on me. The lyrics, the beat...everything...just amazing. Stevie needs to release some new material! Which I hear she's going to do after Fleetwood Mac's tour is over.

The best of all of Stevie's songs, in my opinion. I can't really describe it. It's just so awesome though!

Perfect is a really good song-I can honestly list Sara as one of my fave country singers.

Martina, well, it's Martina!! You haven't heard In My Daughter's Eyes yet? Pay closer attention-it's almost top 10 on the country charts!

Sheryl does a nice job on her cover. BTW-she IS crossing over to country. Officially. Gonna record in Nashville.

Patty's song is good.

Patsy is a legend.

Talk to Me is great. Probably my fave single of hers NOT from her debut album.

Yes, I have heard In My Daughter's Eyes, but only once, and not even all the way through then. It has potential.

So Sheryl's gonna record in Nashville? That's cool. Good to see someone mainstream like her going back to her roots.

I'm sort of going through phases with all of these Stevie songs. One week I listen to a select ten or twelve, then switch some out the next week. At least I'm getting around to all of them that way!

First heard this on Music Choice's Classic Rock channel back in the spring, and loved it right away. This is a superb song, with wonderful vocals and a dreamy, melancholy arrangement.

2. Til I Die - Beach Boys

Up until this past year, I was a casual Beach Boys fan - I knew the hits, but not much past that. Pete's posts on YL and here on the Click inspired me to check out their music in more depth, and am I glad I did! What a powerful song - love it!

3. Song of the Evergreens - Chicago

As we talked about on PMs, I'd had the Chicago VII for years, but had never listened to it all the way through. Your INSANE list inspired me to give this one a listen, and it quickly became a favorite!

4. Byblos - Chicago

Another great cut from Chicago VII, that I checked out after seeing it on the INSANE list. Outstanding!

5. Surf's Up - Beach Boys

Loved this from first listen! Beautifully arranged and produced - one of their best. I've played this quite a few times - it sounds great in the 5.1 surround sound on the Endless Harmony DVD.

6. Future Games - Fleetwood Mac

An excellent early cut that I first heard on the Music Choice Classic Rock channel.

7. Europa - Santana

Heard this one on Netscape Internet Radio's Psychedelic channel. Great!

8. Rock & Roll Stew - Traffic

This has since become my favorite Traffic cut. Love it!

9. It's About Time - Beach Boys

This great rocker is one of the reasons I love the Sunflower CD so much.

10. My Eyes Have Seen You - Doors

Another tune I first heard on Netscape's Psychedelic channel.

11. One of My Turns - Pink Floyd

I can't figure out why classic rock stations ignore their earlier songs. This one is great!

12. Whiskey Train - Procol Harum

A really nice song that I heard on the Music Choice Classic Rock channel.

13. Concrete Angel - Martina McBride

I first heard this on CMT, on the video. Such an emotional song, and Martina's vocals are flawless on it.

14. The Game of Love - Santana with Michelle Branch

I'm not too fond of recent top 40 songs in general, but really liked this one. For some reason, it reminds me of late 70s music.

15. Ride the Tiger - Jefferson Starship

Another song I first heard on Music Choice's Classic Rock channel. I hope to get this one on CD soon.

16. Old Man Took - America

I picked up Holiday used on vinyl last year, and this is one of my favorite cuts from it. I was disappointed that it wasn't included on the new Complete Greatest Hits Collection.

17. Fresh Air - Quicksilver Messenger Service

I'd heard 'What About Me' a few years back, but wasn't familiar with this one until early last year. Both of those are great.

18. Slip On Through - Beach Boys

One of my favorites from Sunflower. Dennis was really coming into his own as a writer.

19. Woman of 1000 Years - Fleetwood Mac

Another wonderful early Mac cut I heard on the Music Choice Classic Rock channel. I'd love to find a greatest hits CD of their early 70s material.

20. Never Without You - Ringo Starr

This was played on Beatle Brunch when Ringorama was first released. Love the references to the Beatles songs George wrote.

21. I've Got a Feeling (We'll Be Seeing Each Other Again) - Al Wilson

Great mid 70s soul from a very talented singer.

22. Save It for a Rainy Day - Four Tops

I've loved Stephen Bishop's version for years, but never realized the Tops had done it also! They do a really nice job with it.

23. Coloured Rain - Traffic

An excellent song from a group I've really grown to enjoy in the past year. Like 'Rock & Roll Stew', I heard this on Music Choice Classic Rock.

24. Love Reign O'er Me - Who

Really liked this when I first heard it, on one of the classic rock stations here.

25. This One's for the Girls - Martina McBride

Very nice, upbeat song from Martina that I first caught on CMT.

Glad the INSANE list inspired you to listen to those Chicago songs! Did you notice those 2 Beach Boys songs were also very high on the list back then?

Actually, 'Song of the Evergreens' is playing right now as I type - a good choice for today, after all that snow we got last night!

Yes, I remember seeing both of those on the list - can't recall how they were ranked, but I know they were pretty close to the top. They would definitely rank high on my favorites list also!
