We've now hit the top 700! Here we go...
700. THE ONE THAT YOU LOVE-Air Supply (81) (#-1-1 wk-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD) (87 rank-613)
For reasons I just don't quite know, I've always LOVED this stately ballad. A huge fave in the summer '81, and my all-time fave of theirs.
699. THE LOCO-MOTION-Kylie Minogue (88) (#-3-B'board, #1-1 wk-DJD) (87 rank-none)
Wow--2 Aussie acts in a row! Loved that type of dance music in the late 80's, and liked her music AND looks as much as Samntha Fox and Debbie Gibson. Love all 3 big versions; I think they're all in my top 700.
698. RETURN TO SENDER-Elvis Presley (62) (#-2-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD) (87 rank-612)
Of his 3 top 3's from 1962, my easy fave. First knew from oldies shows in the mid 80's, and one of my top 3 post-50's tunes of his.
697. FEEL LIKE MAKIN' LOVE-Bad Company (75) (#-10-B'board, #3-DJD) (87 rank-611)
Essential classic. Until the mid 80's, easily their tune I heard the most. I guess I put this up higher than "Can't get enough" because it seems to show up quite high on those classic rock countdowns.
696. YOU’RE THE INSPIRATION-Chicago (85) (#-3-B'board, #2-DJD) (87 rank-610)
Man did I seem to rank those mid 80's songs high on my 1987 list, and then not putting them down too far in 1995! Has that changed! Still, one of my fave later-era Cetera tunes. EVERYWHERE on radio in early 1985; unescapable.
695. YOU MIGHT THINK-Cars (84) (#-7-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD) (87 rank-510)
Ah...more mid 80's! LOVED this more "outta the box" than any of their others. Still holds up well today. 2nd of their 3 in the top thou.
694. KING OF PAIN-Police (83) (#-3-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD) (87 rank-608)
Huge on album rock and top 40 in the fall '83. Nothing too special; just another biggie from MTV's golden age.
693. IT'S YOUR THING-Isley Brothers (69) (#-2-B'board, #1-1 wk-DJD) (87 rank-607)
Loved this straight from my sister's records! And some oldies play too. Brassy soul with attitude--love the guitar and piano! BTW, this was their first hit where the musical family expanded from 3 to 6. Their highest ranking tune.
692. ALWAYS-Bon Jovi (94) (#-4-B'board, #9-DJD) (87 rank-none)
Very popular ballad, a new selection from their Greatest Hits "Cross Road" album. Maybe their most "pop" oriented tune, a far cry from their "Runaway" days.
691. MUSIC BOX DANCER-Frank Mills (79) (#-3-B'board, #1-3 wks-DJD) (87 rank-606)
One of my mom's all-time faves. Somewhat disco, but a more lively, easy listening piano tune. This couldn't have been a big hit from the MTV era onward. What a great tune.
690. JUMP (FOR MY LOVE)-Pointer Sisters (84) (#-3-B'board, #3-DJD) (87 rank-605)
This and "I'm so excited" just summed up their big mid-80's pop success. One of those many great summer '84 tunes. Workout, baby! Their highest on the list.
689. 19th NERVOUS BREAKDOWN-Rolling Stones (66) (#-2-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD) (87 rank-604)
Though not often named right off as one of their bigger hits, this has always been a huge fave of mine, straight from my oldest brother's "Hot Rocks" tape from a long time ago. Love that ending! It's their third of no fewer than ten in my big thou.
688. I'M YOUR MAN-Wham! (86) (#-3-B'board, #1-3 wks-DJD) (87 rank-415)
Let that fruit fly. But what better did I know from high school? That was such a killer funky groove heard in relatively few hits from the time. Sadly, the group had pretty much jumped the shark by then, and George went on to bigger and better (?) things.
687. CAT'S IN THE CRADLE-Harry Chapin (74) (#-1-1 wk-B'board, #5-DJD) (87 rank-603)
What a great story song. Everyone has heard this I'm sure. A well-deserved berth in my top thousand. RIP.
686. HEAT OF THE MOMENT-Asia (82) (#4-B'board, #4-DJD) (87 rank-602)
Maybe the best "supergroup" 80's hit of 'em all. Super sounding tune from one of the all-time best albums. Super drumming from Carl Palmer, and I just LOVE Steve Howe's keyboards.
685. NO MATTER WHAT-Badfinger (70) (#8-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD) (87 rank-601)
Ever since high school, I have simply LOVED this tune, like to DEATH. I think all my other high school buddies into U2 and Floyd could have SERIOUSLY gotten a clue. Power pop/rock atb its abolute best, BAR NONE. It's like--PERFECT, complete with a second's worth of silence. Oh, did I say I LOVE that slide guitar? Let's see your comment, Ken!
684. COME GO WITH ME-Expose (87) (#5-B'board, #1-3 wks-DJD) (87 rank-565)
Wow, what a change of pace! No, not the Dell-Vikings tune LOL. Freestyle-dance that just tickled my fancy in my junior year of high school. Get your dance on!
683. 16 CANDLES-Crests (59) (#2-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD) (87 rank-600)
I've always simply LOVED this--maybe my personal all-time top doo wop tune. Just seems to be THAT great! Great voice possessed by Johnny Maestro!
682. URGENT-Foreigner (81) (#4-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD) (87 rank-599)
Man, another of their all-time best! That guitar intro just gets me hoppin' into this! Just top notch thru and thru, and that sax from Jr. Walker is THE BOMB!!! No fewer than 4 more from Mick, Lou & Co. up higher!
681. JUSTIFIED AND ANCIENT-KLF with Tammy Wynette (92) (#11-B'board, #2-DJD) (87 rank-none)
Man, there have been some weird combinations all through rock music's history. Techno/rap meets country!
The original album version was a VERY mellow tune, nothing at ALL like this remix version that was popular throughout the world. Stand by the J.A.M.S.!
680. LONG COOL WOMAN (IN A BLACK DRESS)-Hollies (72) (#2-B'board, #2-DJD) (87 rank-598)
No question, their most popular. Just seems to stand out considerably over their 60's pop/rock tunes and some ballads. Allan Clarke sounded in quite fierce, yet fine form for the song's awesome rhythm. Get it on!
679. MRS. ROBINSON-Simon & Garfunkel (68) (#1-3 wks-B'board, #2-DJD) (87 rank-596)
My all-time fave of theirs, and from one of my all-time fave movies, The Graduate. A tip to the Beatles as they go "coo coo ca choo". Just a great song with great feeling.
678. LAST DANCE-Donna Summer (78) (#3-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD) (87 rank-595)
Another great tune from a great movie--and an Oscar winner as well! I just could not get enough of her music back then--first of 6 chart toppers on my early lists in less than 20 months! With this being the 5th of her 9 in the big thousand, just her 4 Billboard #1's remain.
677. THAT'S WHAT LOVE CAN DO-Boy Krazy (93) (#18-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD) (87 rank-none)
Absolutely LOVED this. Great late era Stock-Aiken Waterman production (think Rick Astley and Kylie Minogue)! Somewhat candy-coated pop, yet this is just TOO good! Are you still here, Juggie...
676. HONKY TONK (PARTS 1 & 2)-Bill Doggett (56) (#2-B'board, #2-DJD) (87 rank-594)
Finishing off this portion with one KILLER instrumental! Part 2 got more airplay, but you essentially need to hear the whole thing. (Part 2 concentrates more on a guitar solo) Sax and organ together never sounded so GREAT! Somewhat becoming forgotten today, but in my heart, this is one TRUE early rock era R & B STANDARD. Just super.
More coming soon!
