A little backstory: Around 1990, I began making a series of mix cassettes which I titled "Sounds of the Sixties," "Sounds of the Seventies," and "Sounds of the Eighties," each featuring a different track listing of songs. By the year 2000, the series had grown to well over 100 cassettes. In 2001, not yet having a CD burner, I started re-recording the series to mix up the artist selections a bit more and add some songs I'd discovered since then. I finished the '60s and did 30 tapes of the '70s, but stopped after that. One of these days I might redo the series, but on CDs this time - much easier! ;D Anyway, I thought I'd share a few of these cassette mixes with you all. This one is Sounds of the Sixties 14, a later '60s mix, that I rerecorded in 2001. Here's the track listing: Side 1: Both Sides Now - Judy Collins The Beat Goes On - Sonny & Cher When I Die - Motherlode Baby I Love You - Aretha Franklin Love (Can Make You Happy) - Mercy Cowboys to Girls - Intruders Come Together - Beatles I Wonder What She's Doing Tonite - Boyce & Hart Tracy - Cufflinks No Matter What Shape Your Stomach's In - T-Bones Woman, Woman - Gary Puckett & the Union Gap Jam Up Jelly Tight - Tommy Roe Hazy Shade of Winter - Simon & Garfunkel People Got to Be Free - Rascals Too Busy Thinking About My Baby - Marvin Gaye Side 2: Love Makes the World Go Around - Deon Jackson While My Guitar Gently Weeps - Beatles Time Has Come Today - Chambers Brothers This Guy's in Love With You - Herb Alpert She's My Girl - Turtles My Pledge of Love - Joe Jeffrey Group More Than a Dream - Stevie Wonder The Oogum Boogum Song - Brenton Wood Georgy Girl - Seekers I've Got A Feeling - Beatles Everyday People - Sly & the Family Stone (I Know) I'm Losing You - Temptations Hurt So Bad - Lettermen Darlin - Beach Boys What are your thoughts on this mix?

That's a great mix, Dawn. The cassette was the first medium (other than reel to reel) that allowed us to make our own mixes, and you could get 90 minutes or so of music on one tape - AND play it in your car.
Quite a mix! My faves are Time Has Come Today (did you lose the uncut version?), While My Guitar Gently Weeps. and She's My Girl.
But whats this? No Beach Boys?

The Time Has Come Today is the single edit. I dubbed it from a budget-line cassette I bought years ago called Best of '60s Psychedelia. Oh yes, the Beach Boys are on there - last song on side 2. A thought that occurred to me while I was looking through these old cassettes is how much different they would be if I were to make these mixes today. There would be a lot more Beach Boys tracks, as in 2001 I still wasn't familiar with a lot of the deeper album cuts that would transform me from casual to super fan. I'd also add more Monkees, Traffic, Left Banke, Strawberry Alarm Clock, and a bunch of songs by some obscure sunshine pop/baroque bands.

One that included both album cuts and 45/radio edits of songs. It could be called "The Long and Short of It" ;D The Chambers Bros. song would be a good candidate as would In A Gadda Da Vida, Light My Fire, You Keep Me Hanging On (Vanilla Fudge version) -- and -- that's enough. It wouuld already probably fill a CD. D'oh. I can't believe I missed Darlin' on your list! I must have been looking at it with my pink-eye. I was thinking that about your mix also, Dawn. I remember when you posted that top five favorite artists list back about 3 or 4 years ago and had moved The Beach Boys to #1.

I don't have pink-eye, but just yesterday I was having the worst time with reading a paper up close. As Mark likes to kid me, I suspect it will soon be time for the ol' bifocals. Yes, I remember that post - yikes, has it been that long?! I had checked out some of their albums that Pete had recommended in various posts on YL and here on the Click, and the rest, they say, is history!

I'm thinking I just may do one CD of that type and make it part of my Play It Again series. Yep. The big 4-0 is usually when people start needing bifocals. I fought the whole idea and didn't get them until I was about 46. They weren't hard to get used to at the time, I found. But these days, we really need trifocals (distance, computer, reading) I guess I don't know if it's really 3-4 years ago that you made that post. But those things are always longer ago than one thinks. I tried to search for the post, but with no luck. I don't remember who started it (I think it might have been Pete) and I can't think of a key word that wouldn't draw about 500 hits.

Hi Dawn, An excellent mix of tunes. Jam Up Jelly Tight is one of my faves from Tommy Roe.Nice to see some Canadian content with Motherlode The version I first heard of Cowboys To Girls was by the band Sweet Blindness back around '76 on K-tel's Blockbuster album. The Intruders version, I heard sometime in the early 90's. The only song I'm not familiar with is by Mercy. Is it psychedelic? soul? I have the Deon Jackson song on the "b side" of my reissue 45 of Cool Jerk - and I've never listened to it, I guess it's about time I gave it a spin. I just listened to The Beat Goes On last week.

Its more like Pablum with sugar syrup. ;D Agreed; it is pretty hokey! But Dawn does have a lot of good stuff on that tape. Actually I was thinking that Motherlode song was from the '70s. That's when I first heard it, but then again, that's when I first heard a LOT of older stuff...

That is a really cool mix of great 60s songs Dawn. A couple of them will forever be on the soundtrack of my life
First Song: Tracy by the Cufflinks. I had a really close friend named Tracy that I met in 1969. By May of 1973, both of us were in between relationships, so she became my grad night date at Disneyland in Jun 1973. Still think of her even though we lost contact around 1978.
Second Song: Too Busy Thinking About My Baby by Marvin Gaye. I was stationed in Greenland in 1984. We had one weekend in Nov 1984, where the whole weekend from Fri - Sun, was geared to raise money for charities. One of my donations was to pledge (and pay) about $100.00 to hear this song play. This song was played for my daughter, who was about 6 months old at the time. The song played until someone out bid me. Hearing that song play for around 10 minutes was one of the best 10 minutes of my life. Got to think about her, even though I was around 1500 miles away from her. It was a lot of fun. And now, in about 6 weeks, she will have her first baby, my first grandchild. Think I will include it on a disc for her.
