One of the bars in my area is having 80's metal cover bands throughout the month of July. This past Saturday night I went to catch Diver Down, a Van Halen tribute. What an AWESOME show! I needed a good time, after yet ANTOHER disasterous match.com date the night before (I'm just having NO luck with that thing, I've pretty much given up)..
So here's my insightful (and quite humorous) review..
The Eddie VH guy was about 4'11", had a British accent, and looked like Jon Lovitz dressed in red and white overalls with a red scarf tied around his neck. He also had the classic Eddie mullet from 1984, but he may have used a little too much spray... It looked a little too HUGE in proximity with the rest of his body.
The David Lee Roth guy was the SKINNIEST guy I've EVER seen. He didn't look much taller than Eddie. A few months ago on VH1, I saw a cartoon parody of the show "Blind date", with David Lee Roth taking out Anna Nicole Smith. The cartoon version of DLR could have been this guy! I swear, I've seen Asian girls with wider hips!
The Michael Anthony guy looked NOTHING like him. Just looked like some guy off the street. Michael Anthony would be SO insulted to know that he's not important enough to be represented properly in a Van Halen tribute band. It must suck being him...
All I could see behind the ENORMOUS 6000 piece Ludwig kit was a pair of sunglasses and a thin white headband. i guess that was supposed to represent Alex Van Halen..
The set list was AWESOME!! ALL stuff off the first 6 albums, NO Hagar or Cheronne material. They asked for requests at one point. I yelled out "Little Dreamer", and they went right into it! YEAH! Made my night! They did songs that VH probably never even did live!
They were very crowd friendly, as well! They'd run out into the crowd, prance around and act goofy. At one point, I felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned and there's the David Lee Roth guy, with his arm around me, giving me a classic DLR "One break, coming up!" look!
Here's a rundown of the songs they did (I'm going album-by-album, so NOT in this order!):
Runnin' With The Devil
Eruption
You Really Got Me
Ain't Talkin 'Bout Love
Jamies Cryin'
Feel Your Love Tonight
Little Dreamer
Ice Cream Man
Dance The Night Away
Somebody Get Me A Doctor
Bottom's Up! (Encore)
Outta Love Again (Yes, they did THIS!!!)
Everybody Want's Some
Romeo Delight
Mean Street
"Dirty Movies"
Unchained (They opened with this)
So This Is Love
Where Have All The Good Times Gone
Cathedral
(Oh) Pretty Woman
Dancing In the Street
Little Guitars
Happy Trails (Last song)
Jump
Panama
Drop Dead Legs
Hot for Teacher
Girl Gone Bad
