Last night Mark and I went to see Rod Stewart on his Rockin' in the Round Tour at the Staples Center. This was my first time seeing Rod in concert, and I had been looking forward to it very much.
The performance was fabulous! The show lasted from about 8:10 until 10:30, with about a 20 minute intermission in between. Rod opened with Tonight, I'm Yours, and did a great set of songs. He didn't do any material from his Songbook CDs, but instead concentrated on hits from the '70s and '80s, and also did some great covers of Cat Stevens' Father and Son (which accompanied a nice montage of old family photos on the screens), Have You Ever Seen the Rain, and It's A Heartache (the crowd went wild over that one!) His three backing vocalist/dancers, called the Rodettes, did a nice version of Janis Joplin's Piece of My Heart.
Rod looked amazing and sounded fantastic. It's hard to believe he is 62 - he has the energy of someone half his age! He puts on an excellent concert, and I'd definitely recommend seeing his show if he is in your area this spring.
Mark and I bought two of the tour programs, one for us and one to send to my mom, who absolutely adores Rod and has for years. Lots of nice photos in those.
One very cool thing happened unexpectedly. Our tickets were originally for the 300s section, which is the uppermost tiers of the Staples Center, quite far from the stage. But when we tried to locate the entrance for our section, we were told we needed to go to a ticketing room to have our seats relocated - turns out that a large black tarp had been positioned right in front of where our seats would have been. So they gave us new tickets for the 100s section, only 6 rows up from the stage floor - MUCH better seats! We were pretty tickled about that!
