It's that time of year again, the free summer concerts at the Hatch Shell in Boston. Last night I saw The Grass Roots (with John Cafferty opening). It seemed kind of strange to see a band from the 80's opening for a band from the 60's, but the two bands went well together (ironically, Cafferty/BBB oprened for Three Dog Night last year at the free concert.)
We got there during Cafferty's set, but we didn't miss any of their four hits. My personal fave, "Tender Years" seemed slightly slower than the recording. Someone should have slipped the drummer a note telling him to up the tempo a little. Other than that, the band sounded great.
The Grass Roots came on, and, like Steppenwolf last year, only did a one hour show. A couple of songs they did were hits for other artists. They opened the show with "I'd Wait A Million Years", then followed with "Don't Pull Your Love". I was a bit surprised to see them do someone elses hit, when the Grass Roots had so many hits of their own to do. But, listening to the song, it sounds like it could've been a Grass Roots song. Does anybody here know if they ever did it on any of their albums? I know Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds were on the same label as them, so maybe the song had the same writers as many of the Grass Roots hits (Sloan-Barry?). Two other songs they did during the show that were not their hits were "Drift Away" and "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)", good choices that were well-recieved and fit their set well, but I'd have rather heard Grass Roots hits in their place..
They performed several of their hits, including "Heaven Knows", "Sooner Or Later", "Lovin' Things", "Let's Live For Today" (which they dedicated to someone they knew serving in Iraq), "Where Were You When I Needed You", "Temptation Eyes", "Two Divided By Love", "Mamacita" (VERY pleasant surprise!), "Things I Should Have Said", and they wrapped up the show with "Midnight Confessions".
Unfortunately, the following hits did not get played:
Glory Bound (bummer)
Bella Linda (I would have loved to hear this one, but I can see why they'd leave it out.)
Baby Hold On (another bummer)
The River Is Wide
Walking Through The Country
The Runway
Feelings
Come On And Say It
As for the band, only Rob Grille remains from the original band. They sounded great and played the songs well, and the show was definitely worth going to see!
