Because I haven't really been on in a month I wasn't able to post about it coming up, but I did get to see the first of two Chicago area concerts last night!!
They really put on a GREAT show (especially considering their age and the amount of years this lineup was apart!).
Both Dave and Eddie have short hair and I mean SHORT. Dave is kindof buzzed up in the back and Eddie basically has shaved sides and almost a flat top on top. Alex looks basically the same, just a bit more skeletal. Little Wolfie's a bit pudgy, but who cares? No one's mistaking me for Brad Pitt!
Of course Dave couldn't do the screeches exactly like he could 20 + years ago and he cheats by sticking the mike out for the audience to sing, but that was always part of his style. He still did his schtick (which I was happy for) like the kicks and baton twirling. Of course he didn't do as many kicks, but he IS in his 50s!
Eddie of course was the highlight. His playing was studio perfect, for each individual song, right down to his solo. On the big screen behind them we could see him playing up close and my buddies and I were amazed watching him. It was like being 12 again. You could tell by the little bit Eddie said that he's very happy to be alive and out there still doing it.
As far as the set list, here's what they played:
Everything from the first album except Feel Your Love Tonight and On Fire
Dance the Night Away
Somebody Get Me a Doctor
Spanish Fly (part of the solo medley)
Beautiful Girls
...And the Cradle Will Rock
Everybody Wants Some!!
Romeo Delight
Mean Street
Unchained
So This is Love?
Catheral
(Oh) Pretty Woman
Little Guitars
and the 4 big hits from 1984
Eddie also included the intro from Women in Love... as part of his solo medley, and of course Eruption was in that.
Little Guitars was a VERY pleasant surprise. No surprise they featured so much from the debut, but I would've substituted Feel Your Love Tonight in for something else. (On Fire was always kindof a throwaway to me.) Of course, there's tons of album tracks I, as a diehard would have loved to hear, like Outta Love Again, Light Up the Sky, Women in Love..., Hear About it Later, In a Simple Rhyme, Hang 'em High, Drop Dead Legs, Girl Gone Bad, but there is no way to argue with what they played! And of course, those are the most popular ones.
As far as concert highlights, Eddie's solo was probably tops. But as far as individual songs, I'd say Dance the Night Away and I'll Wait. Most people were really up for Dance and I'll Wait was great to hear because despite being a top 20 hit, I think it tends to get overlooked.
I had to pick up a t-shirt in spite of it's $35 price tag. Luckily my buddy picked up the tab on the $7 beer.
So ok, Michael Anthony wasn't there, and Dave couldn't screech like days of old, but hey, I waited 23 years for this and it was worth the wait!!
