Hi friends,
I had the opportunity to see Bruce Springsteen on Monday evening with my brother Steve! This was his second night in town, the previous night was sold out. A bulk of the material came from the latest CD "Magic", which reunites Bruce with the E Street Band.
The show kicked off with "Radio Nowhere" the first single released to radio and one that I've read has opened this tour. Other highlights from the new CD included: "Long Walk Home", "Devil's Arcade" - which was about a soldier returning home from Iraq - and "Girls in their Summer Clothes", which had a Brian Wilson vibe going on.
Bruce relied heavily on album cuts for most of the show particularly "Night", "She's the One" and "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out" from "Born to Run". The band was in top form. Clarence Clemons proves again that he is the best sax player in a classic rock band- maybe the only one for that matter. Max Weinberg still has the killer skills for any drummer half his age. Patti Scialfa - Bruce's wife - was a great duet partner for the politically tinged "Magic", which was more about deception and trickery than sideshow entertainment.
It wouldn't be a Bruce show without a little politics thrown into the mix. Most people have either gotten used to Bruce's rants or just view them as entertaining. These feelings of "I'd never thought I'd see the day of illegal wire tapping, no habeous corpus..." were incorporated into the bittersweet "Livin' for the Future". While things are difficult, we do have the power to change. After that, Bruce let his music do the talking.
While I enjoyed most of the show, I didn't understand why "Working on the Highway" was put on the set list. Of all the key album cuts and singles from the stellar "Born in the U.S.A.", I don't understand why this clunker was chosen!
Some of the other gems were obscurities dedicated to women, such as "4th of July Sandy", "Candy's Room" and "Kitty's Back" which was featured as part of the encore.
My personal favorites were the title track to "Darkness on the Edge of Town", and the rousing energy of "Badlands" and "Born to Run". The final number of the show was Irish-style jig "American Spirit". I'm not sure if this is a traditional folk song but it did get the crowd clapping and moving.
This is my third time seeing Bruce in concert, and the third for Steve as well. I have to say the old guy keeps getting better. And it's never the same show twice. I always enjoy how he's able to combine his new material with the old.
