i was inspired by someone else's intriguing post about classic 60s/70s acts who forge on with often "suspect memberships". i'm new here, and i don't even know how to find that thread now, so i thought i'd modify the idea by asking:
WHAT 2 KEY MEMBERS OF A GIVEN 60s/70S BAND HAVE TO BE PRESENT FOR YOU TO STILL BUY TICKETS TO SEE THEM?
naturally, we'd all prefer ALL ORIGINAL lineups of our favorite older groups, but death and in-fighting often make that impossible.
for me personally, it's:
THE STONES-MICK & KEEF, forever and always.
THE WHO-obviously, PETE TOWNSHEND & ROGER DALTRY.
THE EAGLES-DON HENLEY & GLEN FREY.
STYX-DENNIS DEYOUNG & TOMMY SHAW.
KISS-GENE & PAUL, and whomever they put in the cat and spaceman suits.
BOSTON-TOM SCHOLTZ & BRAD DELP (deceased).
THE DOOBIE BROTHERS-TOMMY JOHNSTON & PAT SIMMONS. i like MICHAEL MCDONALD too, but he doesn't HAVE to be there for me to enjoy the show, which rocks a lot more now that he's out of the lineup. HEART-ANN & NANCY, the WILSON sisters.
BTO-RANDY BACHMAN & FRED TURNER.
MOODY BLUES-JUSTIN HAYWARD & JOHN LODGE.
FOREIGNER-LOU GRAMM & MICK JONES.
GRAND FUNK-MARK FARNER & MEL BREWER.
MONKEES-MICKEY & DAVY.
any thoughts? additions?...

First, I kinda agree with all of jdb's list except the Monkees. I would go with Mike & Peter. Just me.
My list:
1. Led Zep - Jimmy & Robert 2. ZZ Top - Billy & Dusty 3. Byrds - Roger McGuinn & David Crosby 4. The Band - Robbie Robertson & Rick Danko 5. Allman Brothers - Greg Allman & Dickie Betts 6. Fleetwood Mac (1975 - present) - John McVie & Stevie Nicks 7. Deep Purple - Ritchie Blackmore & Roger Glover 8. ELO - Jeff Lynne & Kelly Groucutt 9. Lovin' Spoonful - John Sebastian & Joe Butler (I did see the Spoonful a few years ago without John, but I didn't have to pay for it, so it was all good.) 10. I would put Skynyrd on this list, but I saw them live in 1975, with all the original guys and girls, and I can't imagine paying any amount of money to see them in any configuration but the original. Sorry.
BTW jdb, the thread I think you are looking for is on the Music Question (Questions 67 & 68) board. It is called "How Many Original Members Maketh a Band."

actually, MIKE is my favorite of all the MONKEES, and i saw PETER TORK with his own band many years ago in a small club in BOSTON.
i never cared much for the JOHNNY VAN ZANT version of SKYNYRD either...you're fortunate to have seen the original group in its prime!
i saw the first version of RINGO'S ALL STARR BAND, with RICK DANKO and LEVON HELM, and they reprised several cool BAND classics like STAGEFRIGHT, THE WEIGHT, and THE NIGHT THEY DROVE OLD DIXIE DOWN. that's the closest i ever got to seeing THE BAND.
thanks, i was on that "How Many Original Members Maketh a Band" post a time or two yesterday, then couldn't find it again, no matter how hard i tried!

I saw Heart one time without Nancy Wilson. It was an "ok" concert. Ann was great, of course, but it just wasn't the same without Nancy. I think she had just had a baby at the time and wasn't touring.
I saw the Monkees live without Mike Nesmith. He wasn't too badly missed. And I met Micky Dolenz after the concert, so it made up for it.
I saw Styx without Dennis DeYoung. I thought it would be a disaster, but it was actually better than I ever thought it would be.
I remember when Fleetwood Mac was appearing live in our town several years ago without Stevie Nicks and (I think) Lindsey Buckingham. A couple of friends of mine were gonna go and they invited me, but I just couldn't bring myself to go. Tickets were like, 11 bucks. LOL! But that still wasn't an incentive for me to go see 'em.

Peter performed at Lake Arrowhead last summer, and I would have loved to have seen that show if Mark and I could have driven up there in time (it was fairly early on a Friday evening, if I recall correctly.) Hopefully he'll be making some tour stops out this way again this year.
