This was the album that got me hooked on John Cougar Mellencamp. Pink Houses is my favorite song by him, by any of his names. I'd heard the other songs, but this was the first album of his I bought, and I bought several more after that. Maybe the singles didn't do as well as some of his earlier ones, but two in the top 10 from this album ain't bad. Favorites: Crumblin' Down, Pink Houses, Authority Song, Jackie O, Play Guitar, Golden Gates.

Love it!! I gave the CD a spin about a week or so ago (been a while since I'd heard it) and oh man every songs kicks butt . It took me right back to high school. I saw the videos for Authority Song , Pink Houses and Crumblin Down many times back then . Just a great collection of songs. Starting with American Fool and continuing with this effort IMO he was releasing amazing material. Faves : Pink Houses , Play Guitar , Lovin Mother Fo Ya (fo ya?? LOL! , Authority Song, Warmer Place To Sleep , Crumblin' Down and Serious Business.

This was probably my first non compilation, non hand me down album I owned! LOL!
Just looking at the album cover takes me back-the "drawn" picture of John, the not typical album smooth feel of the cover. I remember listening to that on my old obnoxious stereo in my basement room.
Hearing Crumblin' Down and Pink Houses takes me back to winter of 83-84.
I remember knowing the whole first side before Authority Song came out as a single. I hated it then, and still don't like it. BUT, I thought Warmer Place to Sleep was a great song, and shoulda been a single!
Play Guitar is another good tune, used to get play at the bar we used to go to.

Like you, this was the first album of his that I got, and I was really impressed. 'Crumblin' Down' has always been one of my favorite Mellencamp songs - I remember hearing it often back in the day.

I agree with you that his work on both this album and American Fool is outstanding. There are so many strong tracks on this album, both singles and album cuts. LOL about 'Lovin' Mother Fo Ya' - that is an odd title! ;D

I remember ordering this album on cassette through the Columbia House club back in 1984 or 85. I know my mom was pretty excited when it arrived - she has always been a big fan of his! I agree with you about 'Warmer Place to Sleep' - that could have been very successful as a single. 'Play Guitar' used to get some airplay on an AOR station out of Charlottesville that I used to listen to a lot back then. You're right, that's a great song as well!

One of my favorite Cougar/Mellencamp albums. ;D Not a bad song on here. Never get tired of listening to 'em. And he's from my home state of Indiana!

His music really has held up well over the years, especially the songs from this album. I always like to crank up 'Crumblin' Down' - what a great song!
