I never had this album, but I wouldn't have minded it. I had the Jack and Diane single, and my dad had Hurt So Good (the flip, Close Enough was good). And I even liked Hand to Hold On to.
This was his breakthrough, in that the first two albums basically had only 1 song each.
Good stuff.

Before it came out, he wasn't too well known, despite having had a couple of hits. This was definitely the album that made him a household name. I remember 'Jack and Diane' was huge back then! All three singles from the album are great!

'Thundering Hearts' and 'Close Enough' are both excellent album tracks - I think either of them could have been successful as a single.

One of my all-time fave albums. Just HAD to get it for Xmas '82. In fact, containing 2 of my all-time top songs ever. I don't think the album (or songs) even had a Grammy nomination, and so much crap wins today. Pity. In addition to the 3 WONDERFUL hits, I also like the aforementioned Thundering Hearts (got some album rock radio play), Close Enough (for Rock 'n Roll!), and the SUPER ballad "Weakest Moments". Danger List and Can You Take It are better than a lot of his later stuff, and China Girl (not to be confused with the Bowie tune) is the weakest entry, but still good. BRAVO!!!

My best friend's sister had this album.
We spent a lot of time listening to Jack and Diane over and over, as well has Hurts So Good.
Jack and Diane was such a unique song. I had never heard anything like it at that time.

Excellent album. I loved "Jack and Diane" when it came out. That's the track that made me buy the album, and then upon further listening, I found that I enjoyed pretty much every song on the album. Really like Thundering Hearts and Weakest Moments. And you know, everyone DOES need a hand to hold onto. LOL!

Hi Dawn
I don't have this album, so I've only heard the hits (as far as I know). Jack & Diane & Hurt so Good are great songs, so maybe I'll need to look for this CD and check it out.

That's surprising that this album wasn't nominated for a Grammy - it's definitely one of the best albums from 1982. This album and 'Uh-Huh' were his finest efforts, IMO.

I had never heard anything like it at that time. I agree, 'Jack and Diane' really stood out back then, and I think that was one of the reasons it was so popular. Lyrically, this is one of John's best songs.

That's the way it was with me - I really liked the singles, but was also pretty impressed with the album cuts when I heard them. You are absolutely right about needing a hand to hold on to! That's my favorite song from this album.

If you like those two songs, I think you'd really enjoy the rest of the album. As I mentioned to Dave, I think it and 'Uh-Huh' are his best.
