special note: the album included a bonus E.P. of four Everly Bros cover tunes played by Nick and Dave. I was very happy these were included on the CD reissue.
I picked up my vinyl copy (with E.P.) in the late 80's and bought the CD sometime in the early 90's. It is one of my absolute favorite 80's albums
Even though they only released this one album - the band played on almost every solo album by Edmunds or Lowe in the late 70's . Before this, in the early 70's Nick was in the band Brinsley Schwarz , Terry was in the Group MAN and after Rockpile split would join Dire Straits. Before embarking on a solo career in 1970 Dave was in the 60's group Love Sculpture.
This album is full of so many great tunes and the band plays with such energy and enthusiasm. It rocks from beginning to end. After the album was released they did one final tour from Nov 15 - Dec 13 - 1980 the dates are listed on the back cover of the LP .
Teacher, Teacher - I heard this lots back in the day and loved every minute of it , great little video too , love the jangly guitars.
If Sugar Was as Sweet as You - great driving rhythm laid down by Terry and terrific vocal by Dave . A great piece of rock and roll .
Heart - Piano intro sounds very much (IMO) like the intro to the Chiffons One Fine Day. A terrific tune written by Lowe . He re- recorded this on his 1982 album Nick The Knife.
Now and Always - Ringing electric guitars open the song sung by Dave and Nick. A superb pop tune.
A Knife and Fork - Terry plays a great shuffle feel on this kind of bluesy tune. Nice electric piano solo. Some very fine guitar playing is also heard.
Play That Fast Thing (One More Time) - A great boogie woogie type of tune. Terry kicks things off with some superb drum fills settling into a shuffle feel once again . and the whole band kick ass for 4:12!
Wrong Again (Let's Face it) -This was written by Tilbrook and Difford of Squeeze. Love the sound of Dave's vocals on this. Some great acoustic rhythm guitar drives the song along nicely.
Pet You and Hold You - A cool little catchy tune about a guy who can't wait to see his girlfriend. Sung by Nick who also provides some superb melodic bass playing
Oh What a Thrill - Written by Chuck Berry! - and this version is smokin'!
When I Write The Book - This is so good ! Great vocal by Nick and some fine keyboard and acoustic guitar work as well - nice background vocals.
Fool To Long - Why aren't there great rock tunes like this now - oh why. Terry really hammers the drums on this one.
You Ain't Nothin' But Fine - It 's impossible to sit still when this song is playin' - Amazing 50's rock feel to this. A great one to crank up in the car while driving around and a fantastic choice to close the album.
a few words about the Bonus tracks - As I mentioned above - Dave and Nick sing 4 Everly's covers - two voices , two acoustics. They do an amazing job - you can tell they really love the songs and respect Don and Phil.
1.Take a Message To Mary
2.Crying In The Rain
3.Poor Jenny
4.When Will I Be Loved
