Hey, I think it's time for an album review from me!
I've mentioned many times about the CD's our local DJ put out. I already reviewed what was probably my fave, Volume II. Today I will do Volume I.
Bob Stroud's Classic Rock Roots, Volume I 1998
Bob has had a show called Classic Rock Roots on the various stations he has been on for YEARS. In 98, he had enough requests to start throwing together collections. They have been a huge success, mostly because he gathered hard to find one hit wonders, and each volume had at least 1 song that had previously never been available on disc!
1. Low Rider-War Of course, this has become a sort of cult classic. Cool to have on this disc, but War is one of those bands that has a few hits and are worth buying a whole collection from.
2. Itchycoo Park-Small Faces I had this on a reissue 45, but it was so nice to get on disc. I may dive into their stuff later, but for now, this is great to have! A psychedlic classic!
3. Get it On-Chase One I didn't know when I got the disc. A totally horn classic! Fit right in with BST and Chicago at the time. Sort of funky rock-n-soul.
4. Time Has Come Today-Chambers Brothers Psychedelic Psoul! One of the few black psychedelic artists. (Although I believe they were interracial) This is good to hear every so often.
5. White Bird-It's a Beautiful Day Perfect band name for the 60s! LOL! Never an AM band, this was a popular album cut. My hippie aunt loves it. Very cool to have on disc.
6. L.A. Goodbye-Ides of March FIRST TIME ON CD! This is one of the two reasons I REALLY wanted this disc! This is a wonderful song, with great harmonies. Nothing like Vehicle. Although it only peaked in the 70s nationally, it's a big Chicago fave. So happy to get this original recording.
7. You Keep Me Hangin' On-Vanilla Fudge Very interesting take on this Motown hit. I wouldn't mind hearing more Fudge, but this is enough for now.
8. Hot Smoke & Sasafrass-The Bubble Puppy Probably my third fave on here. Another trippy band name. I didn't know this one before, despite having it as the flip on another reissue single. I really like this one.
9. Cottage Cheese-Crow The other reason I wanted this disc. This was actually a flip side that failed, and DJs around the country flipped it over. This was still no huge success, but is a great stop-n-start song. LOTS of organ and wonderful, screaming lyrics. Very cool tune.
10. She's About a Mover-Sir Douglas Quintet Probably the most Oldies sounding song on here. Yet not one that you hear that often. Decent tune.
11. Medicine Man (pt. 1)-Buchanan Brothers First time I ever heard this song. Very bizarre song, and I guess it's a big mystery what they are singing during the fade in. I like it.
12. Dancing in the Moonlight-King Harvest This one is a big fave. Appears on many one hit wonder specials. Very mid 70s. Glad to have this one as well.
Well, I didn't say a whole lot except for a few, but I hope you enjoyed the review!

Woo Hoo! Nice collection Adam ! - Great review
I would love to have Hot Smoke and Sasafrass on disc - I was hoping they would have added it to one of the Nuggets boxes - but oh well, at least I have the 45 . It's been a big fave since I was a kid.
White Bird - Your hippie Aunt has good taste LOL Cool tune - it gets played here quite often - and I even see the LP occasionally.
Dancing In The Moonlight - Has always been a favorite.
Cottage Cheese - I downloaded the song awhile back because of it being mentioned on either YL or here . Love it.
Get It On - I have it on CD and 45 , My cousin was visiting awhile ago and I played him this and he said "Hey! I played this in the stage band in High School!"

I just became familiar with White Bird about 2 years ago. It took a while to grow on me, but now I like it a lot.
Hot Smoke & Sassafras, Time Has Come Today, Itchycoo Park, Get It On, and You Keep Me Hangin' On are all great. Time Has Come Today always makes me think of a show that aired back in '88, called Almost Grown - it was an adult version of the Wonder Years. The lead character was a college DJ, and he played this song over and over for hours to try to make up with his girlfriend.
I don't think I've ever heard L.A. Goodbye or Cottage Cheese, but it sounds as though I would enjoy them.

Of course, my fave is Time Has Come Today. Yes, they were interracial. There were four black guys and one white guy, if I remember. I hope the Fudge song is the uncut version. It's such a great song, and the 45 edit is SO short as to make the song almost meaningless.

1. Low Rider-War Always a great one, but I liked this most in the later 80's.
2. Itchycoo Park-Small Faces Cool tune, man!
3. Get it On-Chase In Rhino's "Nice Day" series #5. Always loved this!
4. Time Has Come Today-Chambers Brothers Such a cool one, love the parts where the tempo slows.
5. White Bird-It's a Beautiful Day One of the best tunes from its time to miss the HOT 100. Very much cult status.
6. L.A. Goodbye-Ides of March I just may investigate this specific CD, for I love the band's sound.
7. You Keep Me Hangin' On-Vanilla Fudge Incredibly, I still have just the short version taped from the radio. Only more reasons to get this!
8. Hot Smoke & Sasafrass-The Bubble Puppy I love this! Maybe the hardest drivin' tune from the late 60's to win enough acceptance to reach the top 15. I own this on a Rockin' 60's CD from Madacy (NO, none of their ROCK ON CD's and 20th Century Lifetime of Music CD's are re-records, thank you!)
9. Cottage Cheese-Crow Would love this CD for this tune as well, but actually I'd get a Crow CD as well--LOVE "Evil woman".
10. She's About a Mover-Sir Douglas Quintet Another "Nuggets" track. Fair amount of Sat. night Oldies Show play all those years ago. Never heard such a GREAT mix of organ and maracas! Quite disappointed it lost the first Round of a Nuggets Hits Battle.
11. Medicine Man (pt. 1)-Buchanan Brothers Surprisingly, I never warmed up to this much. Local DJ did a special of 1969 tunes for an entire evening, and he played only about 30 of my 69 requests. Of course, I did not request this but he played it. And he did not play the MUCH better "Sugar on Sunday" by the Clique, also a #22 hit and just as obscure. Haven't heard it in about 10 years, but it seemed like they kept on singing "Color codes". All right then...
12. Dancing in the Moonlight-King Harvest I'm sure some Clicksters know my stand on this. And it just may seal the deal right now. I will ONLY get this CD if it's the ORIGINAL Perception 45 version (reissued on Ripete). No enhanced echo effects, and a different ending that just sounds better. Even WSEN Oldies 92 plays the original. But on all my CD's I have it on, it's the re-record, including "Nice Day #17".

I remember when I reviewed the other volume, you mentioned you wanted to get it. Alas, a reminder, this was only available in Chicago, and then in a limited release. It's out of print! 11. Would he have had TIME to do 69 songs in an evening?? LOL!! 12. Wow, the Have a Nice Day uses a re-record? That's surprising!

I could find some way to burn or copy the song, but it's not high priority. 11. LOL--a typical oldies show had 70-80 songs (5 hours) , and I did get a little carried away... 12. Yeah, sad but true. And single versions for many, especially Dream Weaver, Love Hurts, Small Beginnings, the list goes on.

I've thought it was really cool that your local DJ did this. I wish somebody locally here would put out their own CD mix. No, I take that back. I wish we had DJs with good taste that could put on their own CD mix.
Unfortunately, I only know one song!!

So don't keep us in suspense-which song??

Sounds like a great disc
Low Rider, Itchycoo Park, Get It On, Time Has Come Today, & Dancing in the Moonlight are all good songs
White Bird - Your hippie aunt had good taste. This is a great song. The concert I attended included It's A Beautiful Day.
LA Goodbye, Cottage Cheese, & Medicine Man - don't know these
Vanilla Fudge's You Keep Me Hanging On - Seven minutes of heaven. Great song Hot Smoke & Sassafras & She's About A Mover - Rarely heard tracks, both very good
Except for the three songs I don't know, I have all these on CD or vinyl somewhere.
