Since I've seen The Stepford Wives twice, I've felt the need to listen to some Bette. God, she's fabulous...Anyway, here's another Bette review. My fifth actually. All apologies.
Bette Midler
Some People's Lives
1990
This remains my favorite of all of Bette's album covers. It's a very pretty picture of her - with red hair. I always loved the red hair on her.
1. One More Round
Short track with some really nice Bette-on-Bette harmonies. This is kind of a lame song, but I like it. It possesses a certain cuteness that I just adore.
2. Some People's Lives
Sad, slow-tempo piano number about being unloved. When I'm feeling like no one cares, this song always gives me a nice cry - then I feel like I could rule the world...
3. Miss Otis Regrets
Awesome brass on this song. The lyrics are a little kitschy, but Bette's vocals are really good. I can see why it's on the greatest hits - which needs to be updated, by the way. The compilation is over ten years old. I'm still waiting for a rarities alubm with live tracks (Mary, September) and songs from Bette's movies that were never on any sort of soundtrack (One More Cheer - woo hoo!)
4. Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most
Lengthy number. It's pretty, but I have to be in the right mood for it. Smooth sax though. Nicely done.
5. Night And Day
One of Bette's most underrated songs. Amazing keyboard, beautiful vocals. A perfect track. Love it. It gives me chills.
6. The Girl Is On To You
A simple, pretty ballad about a girl who won't be fooled any more. I liked this from the first time I heard it.
7. From A Distance
One of the biggies that I could never tire of. This is one of Bette's best vocally. She's very strong here.
8. Moonlight Dancing
Bette-on-Bette vocals backed by keyboards and synth make this Diane Warren song a pretty cool track. Another solid song from Bette's best-selling non-soundtrack album.
9. He Was Too Good To Me/Since You Stayed Here
Another one that I love. Wonderful piano, excellent vocals. Very nicely done. This is also quite underrated.
10. All Of A Sudden
Bette is most famous for her ballads, but she's done a lot of really good uptempo songs too. "I see light...over there at the end of the tunnel and...I don't mind...if it takes a little more time." "Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo..."
11. The Gift Of Love
This one is very pretty as well. Co-written by Suzanna Hoffs, it has a similar sound to Eternal Flame and other Bangles ballads. I could almost hear them doing this one.
It may not seem like much to you, but this is one of Bette's albums overall. If you happen to know any of these songs, feel free to comment. If not, at least try to dig up Night and Day. Do it for me. Pweeeese...
