I almost forgot I hadn't done disc 2 yet. Here we go.
Nellie McKay
Get Away From Me
2004
Disc 2
1. It's A Pose
This was the song I heard on Conan O'Brien. The way this song is set up, it's really hard to do live. But she did really well keeping up, singing and playing the piano. This song is another favorite. The style seems really old-fashioned, but the lyrics are anything but.
"Every sentence is a pretext for sex, sex, sex..."
2. Toto Dies
No, not a mention of Toto in the song, but I'm assuming that title is partly derived from the fact that the chorus contains the Winkies infamous "oh we oh". And she uses that to great effect too. Another fave.
3. Won't U Please Be Nice
I need to give the lyrics of this song to my best friend. She would think they're hysterical. This is a jazz number.
"If you don't I'll slit your throat......if we part I'll eat your heart......give me head or you'll be dead..."
"Stop with your jazz oratory...I only listen to top forty...*NSync rules..."
4. Inner Peace
This is a cross between Sari and one of the more laid back jazz songs. The lyrics are all about the pathetic journey from high school to adulthood, and they are dead on. Boy, are they.
5. Suitcase Song
Also jazz, with a phrase that I'm not entirely sure what it means...since I can't figure out what language it's in.
"mayfalta una maleta"
6. Work Song
This one also holds a touch of Sari in it, with almost rap-like lyrics. It's about the monotony of the work world.
7. Clonie
This one sounds like a Leslie Gore song or something, LOL. Lots of pop culture references here, including Phil Spector, Walt Disney, and Russell Crowe. The lyrics are about Nellie and her best friend - her clone.
"The Olsen twins got nothing on us......Oh clonie how I love you...I'm the only person I ever loved..."
8. Respectable
Also quite old fashioned sounding, this song is about a rich boy going out into the world who isn't necessarily as respectable as he seems. There's just a little touch of Spanish in this, with the flamenco guitar and castanets.
9. Really
Jazzy ballad. The lyrics are very nonchalant. In this one, Nellie is indifferent to everything. She's not really sad, she's not really mad, she's not really tough, etc.
"It's just that I'm a yuppie fuck...yes indeed I am...really"
