The greatest Paul McCartney album NOT called Band on the Run! LOL!
I got this back in early 91. I had known the Wings Over America version of You Gave Me the Answer for years and wanted to hear the original. I figured I may as well just get the disc, hoping there would be other good stuff beyond the Listen to What the Man Said single. I didn't even know the Venus & Mars/Rock Show single then!
Venus & Mars/Rock Show is a great way to kick off the album, and Rock Show quickly became a fave. At the time of course, I didn't realize it was a single, so I really kept the two songs separate. The most I know of the song was the quote "What's that man movin' cross the stage? It looks a lot like the one used by Jimmy Page" which was included in the Zeppelin book, The Hammer of the Gods.
Love in Song is decent, a bit dreary, but not horrible.
You Gave Me the Answer it appears people on here don't like. I think it's a cool little number, a tribute to Fred Astaire. It's worlds better than the Beatles' Honey Pie.
Magneto and Titanium Man-here it is, the winner of the album! Once I got the disc, having You Gave Me the Answer wasn't as big a deal once I discovered this gem! What a cool song! Absolutely love it, and I believe I actually heard it on the radio once! An all time fave.
Letting Go-not bad at all. Has that typical McCartney sound to it.
Venus and Mars (Reprise)-not much different here.
Spirits of Ancient Egypt-I'm kinda indifferent to the non-McCartney stuff on here.
Medicine Jar-Same.
Call Me Back Again-For years, I sorta skipped over this. And I used to hear it over the loud speaker at the store I worked at. It sounded a bit familiar, but I had no clue it was! LOL! I didn't realize that it was a sorta famous song in his cannon, but then it ended up on Wingspan! It is a really good song though.
Listen to What the Man Said-Loved it since youth. And it IS essential to have this version with the New Orleans spoken intro. And the Timeless Rock stations plays THAT version!!
Treat Her Gently/Lonely Old People-when you figure that Listen fades in this, it's really a 3 part song! Not too bad, but not as great as that previous track.
Crossroads Theme-Cool little number.
Zoo Gang-Same here.
Lunch Box/Odd Sox-this can also be found in a live medley on the one side of the Coming Up single. A good song which served as a fictional album title in stories a buddy and I wrote in grade school.
My Carnival-First had this on the flip of Spies Like Us, but again, I never gave it a listen. But it's just another good song.
