Since Adam informed me that you can order stuff through your local library system, I've been able to add a wealth of great music to my music library on my computer. I've now surpassed 13,000 songs, and have been recently building up my database of pre-British Invasion tunes. Yeah, I know, an era that I've always said I didn't like much, but it's not so much that I DIDN'T like the music, I just got SO sick of cheesy stuff like "At The Hop" and "Pony Time", (which I STILL don't care for). Plus, I guess all those cheesy John Waters movies killed the era for me.
But I'm realizing that there's a LOT more great music from this era than I thought! So I've been getting a LOT of Time Life "Rock N Roll Era" CD's and the like (all the stuff listed below as years are from that series)..
Plus there's some other stuff in there as well.. Here's a list of the stuff I've borrowed over the past two months since my last post.
Living in the material world / George Harrison. The Best of Peter, Paul and Mary ten years together. Infinity / Journey. (Seems a little out of place here) Rock 'n roll relix, 1962-1963 The Very best of the Righteous Brothers Greatest hits / Linda Ronstadt. Ultimate collection / the Dells. The best of Four Tops Spirit in the dark/ Aretha Franklin. 1963, still rockin' Nat King Cole: Capitol Collectors Series The ultimate Bobby Darin 1962, still rockin' The Shirelles: anthology, 1959-1964. Greatest hits / Kingston Trio. 1963 The best of Jimmie Rodgers (The rockabilly guy, not the yodeler) The Fun-time '50s & '60s ("Your Hit Parade" series, contains "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport" as well as that great classic "Beans In My Ears" by The Serendipity Singers!) The Early '60s The '60s, teen time The '60s, rave on The '60s: keep on rockin'. 1959, still rockin' 1960, still rockin' The '60s Into the '60s Portrait of a legend , 1951-1964 / Sam Cooke. 1959, still rockin' 1960, still rockin' 1959 AM Gold. Early-'60s classics Twang thang: the Duane Eddy anthology. Your hit parade 1956 The Classic rhythm & blues collection. 1955-59 1957, still rockin'

Some excellent finds, Pete. The Time Life series sounds especially good, as do Nat King Cole, the Dells, and Bobby Darin.
I was just mentioning to Adam earlier that the posts you and he have made recently about finding great CDs at the library have prompted me to check out one of the local libraries again, and I have found some really cool selections there.

That's great Dawn! I'd love to hear about some of your recent finds! Find out if your local library has a website, you may be able to connect with other libraries in your area. And if you're looking for a particular item, you can order it online, and it will be sent to your "home" library. I do it all the time when I'm bored at work. BTW- The REAL gem of the bunch I've borrowed is the Duane Eddy set!!

I recently found a three disc Muddy Waters set called the "Chess Box". Has 74 songs from 1947 - 1972. Since I'm trying to build up my blues collection, this a nice find. They also have an eight disc set of Atlantic Rhythm & Blues. So far I've burned Discs 5-8. Over the past year or so, I've added to my collection, CDs by Elton John, Rickie Lee Jones, John Mellencamp, Buddy Guy, and others that I either can't find in the stores, or was just unwilling to purchase. I'll have to ask if my library links to other libraries in the area, not sure about that. Anyway Pete, sounds like you've found some great CDs, wish I could find some of those "gems". The Duane Eddy would certainly be something I'd want.

Especially since I no longer use CD's very often, all my music is on my computer (and soon-to-be iPod, hopefully) and my CD's are in storage. I've been listening to the Duane Eddy set quite a bit, He does an AWESOME cover of "Rockestra Theme" by Wings!

We have that Eddy collection in our system too, I didn't notice that Rockestra was on there! Too cool! I may have already asked you this, but did you find out about the interlibrary loan system from me? I've been doing it since like April and I always seem to have an average of 15 items out and 15 items on hold! LOL!

In past years, I would actually GO to other libraries in the area and look around because my card always said, "Good at any Suburban Library System", but with the advent of the net, things got so much easier! *added* OMG-you said right up in the first line that I told you! WAKE UP ADAM!!!! Only problem is, with new releases, there is sometimes 150 holds on an item!

Only problem is, with new releases, there is sometimes 150 holds on an item! That's why I was so shocked a couple of years ago when my own library had "Let It Be... Naked" a month after it was released!

Some VERY NICE finds Pete I'd pretty much given up on my local library. However seeing what you've managed to pick up. I should give my local branches a second look.

I've found these great CDs there recently: CSN box set Very Best of Curtis Mayfield Dusty in Memphis - Dusty Springfield The Best of Procol Harum It's A New Vibration - Tommy James & the Shondells (It was very cool to come across this, as it has a lot of rare cuts from them I hadn't heard before!) Let's Get It On and Trouble Man - Marvin Gaye The Johnny Rivers Anthology Retrospective - Buffalo Springfield Very Best of Petula Clark Supremes Box Set The Byrds' Greatest Hits I'd be interested in checking out that Duane Eddy version of Rockestra! I definitely want to look into their interlibrary loan system and see what they have.

I think I may have mentioned in an earlier thread that in my local branch of the Fairfax County Library, the only pop CD I ever found was The Elvis Sun Sessions. Everything else is classical music (several of which I have borrowed and copied). There is likely more at other county branches, but for some reason the on-line catalog doesn't seem to list CDs.
