I like Madonna, but definitely not everything she's put out. I had heard her new single "Hung Up" and liked it pretty well but wasn't interested in getting her album because I'm sort of over dance music.
Fast forward a few weeks and there I am in Target buying kitty litter and trash bags and there's the Madonna album staring up at me on sale for 9 bucks.
I bought it on a whim and have been listening to it ever since (about 4 days now).
The album represents both a return to form and a march into the future. Madonna returns unapologetically to her dance music roots but the sound doesn’t sound dated at all. This album is a welcome guilty pleasure.
Tracks:
HUNG UP - The first single off the album which has become a huge hit in the clubs. The song has a sample from ABBA's song Gimme Gimme Gimme
GET TOGETHER - This track has a nice little retro dance beat. I can totally imagine Madonna having released this in the 80s.
SORRY – I believe this will be the 2nd single released. It’s one of my favorite tracks on the album. The chorus samples the bass line from The Jacksons' 1981 hit Can You Feel. Sure to be another huge club and commercial hit.
FUTURE LOVERS - This song has a lot of stuff going on musically and it samples I Feel Love by Donna Summer. It’s probably one of the weaker tracks on the album for me but it’s still pretty good.
I LOVE NEW YORK – A great dance song period.
LET IT WILL BE - this is a song that has a raw feel to it with a funky house groove and a retro 80s feel to it. This song samples the string opening (played on a synth) from her own song PAPA DON'T PREACH.
FORBIDDEN LOVE - This is probably the slowest and most “ambient” song on the album. Nice lyrics on this.
JUMP – Probably the song besides “Hung Up” that I’ve heard the most on tv, radio, Itunes, friend’s houses etc. It’s not my fave track but it’s got a great beat.
HOW HIGH – Can you have a dance track that has profound lyrics about motherhood, marriage, political dogma and religion? The answer is yes, I guess.
ISAAC - Despite the early controversy this song has spawned, this track is really well done. It has a very beautiful Jewish chant with strings and guitars that transport you. She’s gotten some flack because this song is so “spiritual” or whatever. I don’t get people sometimes. I like this track a lot.
PUSH – Written for her hubbie, this song has a lot of modern sounding beats. Again, it’s not my favorite but it’s nice background music.
LIKE IT OR NOT – A very “Madonna” dance track. A clear example of her returning to her roots. One of my favorite tracks, cleverly this last song closes this disco album with an acoustic guitar.
