I've become a fan of country music (mostly the ladies) in the past 5 years. There are some CD's that are absolutely ESSENTIAL. Great from start to finish.
Here is my list:
Martina McBride Evolution (my all time fave) Martina McBride Emotion Kinleys II Dixie Chicks Wide Open Spaces Dixie Chicks Fly Jessica Andrews Who I Am Jamie O'Neal Shiver Carolyn Dawn Johnson Room With a View
Anybody else got a list?

Martina who? Just kiddin'. Actually, thanks to you, Sat, I'm starting to get into Martina McBride more. She has such a powerful voice, and her song "Concrete Angel" just tugs at the ol' heartstrings. Such a sad song. Gotta agree with you on the Dixies. I'd also add "Home" to the list. It's kind of a departure for them, but I really enjoy the CD. I like that they're doing something a little different. Of course, I'd have to include Trisha Yearwood on the list. I'd recommend any of her CD's, but if you're not familiar with her, "Songbook" is probably the best bet. I'd also recommend anything by Wynonna Judd. I'm afraid I don't have her CDs right in front of me at the moment, but I think it's her self-titled CD that is her best, imo. I love how she puts her heart and soul into every song. Great voice! I'm sure there are plenty more to list, but I'm drawing a blank right now. I'll come back to this topic later.

The label that put out the "Only Rock 'n Roll", "Only Love", and "Only Dance" collections a few years back also briefly issued an "Only Country" series. They're great starters for people who are just getting into Country music from various eras. Unfortunately, I think they're out of print, but I bought them used off of Half.com for like, $3 each.

Evenin' Camille! What other country CD's do you have? What country artists do you like? [glow=red,2,300]Most of them are male artists...I have a few Alan Jackson, one by Vince Gill (The Hits), Garth Brooks' In Pieces, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and a lot of tapes (since my dad likes Reba I have a lot of tapes by her). I also have a few mp3s, like The Devil Went Down to Georgia, Wild Angels, 455 Rocket, and a few by Black Hawk. [/glow]

I totally forgot about Mary Chapin Carpenter! She's a great artist! She has a song called "This Shirt"--what an excellent song!

I agree with Pete on the "Only Country" CD's--I have 1950-1954 (I LOVE the Carlisles' "No help wanted") and my fave era 1980-1984. I also have the Kenny Rogers box set, and burned the "40 #1's" from Ronnie Milsap last year. Also have a "10 best" by Juice Newton. Hope to get soon: Eddie Rabbitt (biggest compilation he's got), Crystal Gayle, Sylvia, and Bellamy Brothers (Man, I LOVE "Beautiful Body").

Here's a list of CDs I've got from country artists. I'm looking to upgrade my country collection. Not sure if the are "essential" but I like them.
Alabama - Greatest Hits & For the Record, 41 #1 Hits. I've also got a ton of Alabama on vinyl. Asleep at the Wheel - A couple of hits compilations, love the country swing Glen Campbell - Got a GH compilation, probably happy with that. Johnny Cash - Another favorite, need to look deeper beyond the GH discs I have Charlie Daniels Band - I have a ton of CDB on vinyl, and this is a cheap GH. Need to upgrade to a better one. Patsy Cline - A GH CD, felt I needed something by her. Flatts & Scruggs - Everyone needs a little bluegrass. This is a pretty good compilation. The Highwaymen - Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, & Willie Nelson together. Great CD. Waylon Jennings - Probably my favorite country singer. Again got a lot of him on vinyl & cassette, so my CDs are GH & Essential discs Alison Krauss & Union Station - First heard her on the PBS show "Down the Old Plank Road". Really like her sound. Got three of her CDs. Kris Kristofferson - Another favorite, this is a GH CD Martina McBride - Hard not to get a disc or two from Martina when you hang around here. Got Emotion, Evolution, & her GH disc Tim McGraw - This is the "Live Like Your Dying" CD. Good one Willie Nelson - A GH compilation. Got a ton of Willie on vinyl & cassette. O Brother Where Art Thou - Great movie soundtrack Jerry Jeff Walker - Got a couple of cassettes, this is a GH compilation. Thought I was lucky to find this. Doc Watson - I got this about 4 years ago when I was on a bluegrass kick. Pretty good disc. Will the Circle be Unbroken Vols I & II - Great compilations featuring the Dirt Band. The version of the titles song from Vol I has always been one of my all time favorites. Bob Wills & the Texas Playboy - This is his "essential" CD. Bob Wills was one of my dad's favorites, and I listen to it on his birthday & Father's Day as my way to remember him & the good times we had. I also have some bluegrass compilations & Common Thread & Skynyrd Friends CDs. Anyway, for better or worse these are my country CDs, although I'll keep updating and expanding my country collection.
