(I know 80's metal isn't very popular on the click site, but read on if you want a good laugh....)
An ebay find. The list of songs looked impressive, albeit a mixed bag:
King Kobra-Hungry (Carmine Appice of Vanila Fudge and Rod Stewart fame played drums for this band. At the time, that was this bands claim to fame. NOW, however, they are more known for the fact that the singer, Mark Free, had a sex change and is now Martha Free).
L.A. Guns-Bitch Is Back (not the Elton John song)
Heaven-Rock School (Never heard of this band, and now I wish I hadn't. One of the worst things I've ever seen. The singer is fat and ugly and has bad teeth. The video shows them strutting through the corridors of a high school acting all macho and tough, going in the girls locker room, picking a brawl with the football team, flirting with a sexy female teacher. Just about every bad metal cliche you can think of is in this video. NO WONDER people hate this genre of music so much! Bands like this gave it a BAD NAME! Oh, by the way, the song is driven by a sax riff. Not very "tough" sounding. This video is a great laugh, just too bad it's not INTENTIONALLY funny...)
Kix-Cold Blood (Now HERE'S a good one! Kix were releasing albums for years before they had a hit in '89 with the ballad "Don't Close Your Eyes" and album "Blow My Fuse". this song was a rocker from the same album. Very catchy!)
Black Sabbath-Trashed (From the "Born Again" album, with Ian Gillan on vocals. One of the videos I bought this tape for. Great performance footage of the band interspersed with horrible footage of some punk kid getting drunk and going for a drive, getting in a crash, then "seeking redemption" at some church alter.
Ratt-Round & Round (We've all seen this video. Cool cameo from Milton Berle).
Queensryche-Queen Of The Reich (Some conceptual video in a medeval setting, 'eh.... At least the song is good.)
Loudness-Let It Go (I liked this Japanese band back in the day, but had never seen this video. Some of the worst video effects I've ever seen. Obviously the people who directed these videos thought very little about the product they were making. but I still like the song).
Badlands-Dreams in the Dark (Great song, pretty good video. Badlands were formed by former Ozzy guitarist Jake E. Lee and former Sabbath singer Ray Gillen.)
Winger-Madeleine (It's pretty sad when a band like Winger has one of the better videos in a collection. Oh, well, at least the 12 year old girls had something to look at... )
Frehley's Comet-Rock Soldiers (I love Frehley's Comet. That's how I came across this video. I was on ebay TRYING to find a copy of the "Live + 4" videotape, which I used to have, and this tape came up, with three of the 4 videos the Comet did).
Iron Maiden-Can I Play With Madness? (Worst song they ever did!)
Frehley's Comet-Into The Night (I love this song, and this video is pretty cool. Glad to have this).
Keel-The Right To Rock (Uh oh, I used to like this song in 8th grade, but now I think it's one of the stupidest things I've ever seen or heard. Maybe that's the reason why my grades were so poor back then...)
Quiet Riot-Mama Weer All Crazze Now (Kevin Dubrow was such a buffoon, but at least Rudy Sarzo was cool!)
Winger-Headed For A Heartbreak (I like the girl in the video. She looks pretty hot).
Kiss-I Love It Loud (Ace's last appearance with the band, though he didn't play on the actual track. He has VERY short hair in the clip. I'm on a Kiss kick right now, so I'm glad to have this video. But lose the footage of the kid at the dinner table with his parents!)
Tesla-The Way It Is (I like these guys, they didn't need an image to be "cool", they were themselves and let the music speak for itself).
Dokken-Alone Again (Why THIS video? I love Dokken, but I hate sappy ballads like this one
Frehley's Comet-Insane (Another Ace video, but this clip hasn't aged well with me).
L.A. Guns-The Ballad Of Jayne (LOVE this song, Video just shows the band relaxing around a pool. Not bad..)
Krokus-Ballroom Blitz (YIKES! This is bad!)
Mama's Boys-Mama weer all Crazee Now (Better than the Quiet Riot version. Still a little on the cheesy side, though...)
Lillian Axe-Show A Little love (Performance clip, nothing too embarrassing).
Black & Blue-Miss Mistery (OK, the band is playing on the wing of a plane!! WTF?)
Kings X-Over My Head (Clicksters probably know already how much I love this band, and this video does nothing to tarnish that).
Motorhead-Eat The Rich ('eh... Not big on Motorhead)
Judas Priest-Parental Guidance (A live performance, thank God. Given the songs subject matter, you'd think it would be some "We're Not Gonna Take It"-type video to make them look like buffoons. Instead, they have the big metal monster that comes onstage.
Great White-Lady Red Light (Good video to close the tape with).
All in all, I don't regret this purchase, but it's made me realize a few things: Video killed more than just the "radio star". I think the reason why this music is so unfairly criticized today isn't the quality of the music itself, but the way it was marketed. Some of these videos were made to appeal to the Beavis & Buttheads of the world, and I'm SURE a lot of these bands regret a lot of them.
I still love this music, but I probably won't be expanding my collection of metal videos.
