DVD ? For about a year now, I've been going through my video tapes and have transfered quite a few to DVD (TV specials, movies, concerts etc) and in some cases upgraded some VHS titles to DVD (because the tapes have screwed up).The large majority of my videos play great. It 's just nice to tidy up the collection.
A couple of videos that I had on BETA at one time I now have found DVD copies of - The Beatles at Shea Stadium and The James Paul McCartney TV special from 1973. It's great to be able to add these to my collection again.

But I am probably going to get a DVD burner soon, and probably do the same sort of thing you're doing. I have over 3,000 titles counting movies, TV show episodes, etc., so it'll be a HUGE task. What equipment/process do you use. Is it a double deck VCR/DVD burner, two seperate machines or what?

I've been transferring mine, too. I've done quite a few so far, but like Ed, I have lots of VHS tapes, so it's going to take quite a while before I get finished. Then too, I like to edit out the commercials, and the Roxio software I use to edit the DVD footage is notoriously slow and clunky (just the other day it kept hanging up on me when I was trying to edit some New Shmoo cartoons I recorded from Boomerang awhile back), but I'm planning to try out some different software.
I'm planning to make DVD "sets" of some of the shows we're not likely to see on DVD anytime soon, like The Wonder Years and Rhoda.
One cool thing about DVDs is they take up a lot less space than VHS, especially if you store them in the slim cases or the plastic sleeves.
I've noticed a lot of differences in how well my VHS tapes have held up over time. I have Partridge Family episodes recorded from Nick at Nite in 1993 that still look great, but then again, some of my more recent recordings are already starting to look faded and spotty.

A Hitachi VHS / DVD combo and a Pioneer DVD recorder with an 80gb hard drive.

My DVD collection has really grown in the last couple of years. all together I have over 900 DVDs and VHS tapes. I have a list that I keep in a binder of eveything I have, so I can find it easily.

No, the VCR is hooked up to my DVD recorder. I use my DVD burner in my computer to make back up copies of discs I rent or borrow from friends or family. I use "DVD shrink" or "DVD fab" software to eliminate the copyguard, then use Nero to burn the disc.

Ken, are you pretty happy with the Nero software? I'm debating whether to go with that or try a newer version of Roxio. Mine is about three years old, and I'm wondering if that's the reason it's so slow and glitchy on my computer.
