Well, I had 4 "I's" lined up for today, and Dave made 2 requests, so I will round out the "I's" today with 6 artists.
Janis Ian-a request from Dave. Honestly, I only know At Seventeen. I know the title Society's Child, but don't know the song itself. At Seventeen flashes me back to the 70's, but it's such a sad song. Fave-At Seventeen!
Information Society-Another request from Dave. Don't know ANYTHING about this group, other than the fact that my wife has their popular album. Never bothered to listen to it. That type of dance music isn't my thing.
Donnie Iris-I'd say an often forgotten artist of the early 80s. LOVED Love is Like a Rock back then. Remember taping it off the radio even! Actually don't remember Ah! Leah from back then, but have loved it in recent years. Was in the Jaggerz! Faves-Ah! Leah, Love is Like a Rock.
Iron Butterfly-Of course they are known for their signature early proto-metal song, In a Gadda Da Vida. But I learned an awesome song of theirs called It Must Be Love. It was my aunt and uncle's wedding song. Yes, they were hippies. LOL If you never heard it, check it out! I want to get Rhino's collection of theirs. Fave-It Must Be Love.
Iron Maiden-One of the few "true" metal bands I like (cuz let's face it, Van Halen, Thin Lizzy and even Zeppelin aren't truly metal). Anyway, remember seeing the awesome Run to the Hills video all the time in MTV's good days. I got Number of the Beast because of it, and eventually my wife bought me Best of the Beast. There is some great stuff in there! Probably some of the best "story" songs ever! Interesting to say the least. Faves-Run to the Hills, Aces High, Can I Play With Madness.
Isley Brothers-Another semi-legendary soul band. No Hall appearance yet. Sang the original Shout, which despite being released twice by them, never cracked the top 40! Also famous for doing Twist and Shout before the Beatles. Got kinda funky in the 70s with stuff like That Lady. Decent band. Faves-This Old Heart of Mine, That Lady, It's Your Thing.
And you?

Janis Ian - Know her two hits, but little else about her. Both hits are very good songs. Favorites: Society's Child, At Seventeen
Information Society & Donnie Iris - Never heard of either
Iron Butterfly - Another great song of their's is Soul Experience. In-a-Gadda-Vida is as good a song as it is long. Great drum solo. I'll have to check out It Must be Love. Probably heard it, just can't place it.
Iron Maiden - Heard the name, just don't know enough of their music to make an opinion.
Isley Brothers - Really like this group. Been around forever and have lots of Top 40s. Probably belong in the Rockhall, but may take awhile longer. Favorites: Twist & Shout (better than the Beatles version, imo) This Old Heart of Mine, Its Your Thing, Love the One You're With, That Lady

Janis Ian- I know her two hits. Liked them both. From what I understand, At Seventeen was kind of autobiographical. I remember years later she was being interviewed on some radio program and mentioned that she was the "Ugly Duckling" not so much for her looks, but for her sexual preferences. Information Society- Don't know them Donnie Iris- Don't know him Iron Butterfly- I only know In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. Love the album version, all 17 minutes of it, long drum solo and all. The 3 minute 45 kinda sux. Two rumors I've heard - don't know if either is true. 1) They REALLY wanted to sing "In The Garden Of Eden", but were drunk or stoned. (The rumor is not based on the Simpsons episode. I heard it long before that) 2). The group name IRON Butterfly is what gave birth to the term "Heavy Metal"' Iron Maiden- Heard of them, but not familiar with their music. Isley Brothers- You basically said it all, Sat. THEY did "Shout"; THEY did "Twist and Shout", and no one cares. Their Shout far outshines Joey Dee. I even like their Twist and Shout version better than the Beatles. Faves: Shout, Twist And Shout, This Old Heart of Mine Hey -- so now you've finished the "I"s and missed BOTH Frank Ifield and Burl Ives Still just kidding ;D

It's been so long since I heard the Isleys version of Twist and Shout!

As far as the Butterfly rumors, that first one IS true! The second one however, I have always heard Heavy Metal came from Born to Be Wild-"Heavy metal thunder..." I'm beginning to think you really want Frank Ifield!;P LOL!!

Janis Ian - I've always loved 'At Seventeen', and also like 'Society's Child', although I've only heard it once or twice. I remember she performed here locally about a year ago.
Information Society - 'What's on Your Mind (Pure Energy)' is great!
Donnie Iris - I agree with you about him being forgotten, which is a shame, because he had some great hits. 'Ah Leah' is fantastic - absolutely love it! I also like 'Love is Like a Rock' and 'My Girl', both of which get almost no airplay anymore.
Iron Butterfly - My knowledge of them is pretty much limited to 'In-a Gadda-Da-Vida', but what a classic that is! Wonderful psychedelic sound that really captures the spirit of the times.
Iron Maiden - I used to dislike them, mainly because I heard their music so often at one point. But as time has passed, I've grown to appreciate their music more and more. Favorites: The Trooper, Aces High.
Isley Brothers - Very talented but often underappreciated soul group. That is a surprise about 'Shout' - one of the great classics from the 60's. Favorites: That Lady (absolutely love it!), Fight the Power, For the Love of You, Shout, This Old Heart of Mine, It's Your Thing.
LOL about Burl Ives and Frank Ifield! ;D

Janis Ian - Well I know the two big hits - At Seventeen and Society Child. "Seventeen was even used in a Simpsons Episode .
Donnie Iris - Heard Ah Leah! many times back when it came out - great stuff . But didn't know right away it was Donnie who sang it . Haven't heard Love is Like a Rock in a very long time (it's time to download!) - I remember The Rapper VERY well:) - Faves: Ah Leah , Love is Like a Rock.
Iron Butterfly - In a Gadda is the only tune I know ("hanging head in shame") I am however going to check out It Must Be Love . Faves: In a Gadda Da Vida.
Iron Maiden - There were a lot of MAIDEN fans at my High School judging from the amount of T Shirts I remember seeing LOL.I always liked MC Brain's massive drum kit I've heard a few of the songs over the years(and a few of the video's) but can't recall any of the titles except for Run For The Hills . Faves : Run For The Hills
Isley Brothers - I can dig it! Can't believe their not in "The Hall"- This Old Heart of Mine is one killer tune!I use to hear That Lady quite a bit on the radio too at one point.I also played Shout alot at Weddings. - Faves: This Old Heart Of Mine , It's Your Thing , That Lady , Twist and Shout and Shout

Janis Ian-Other than her two hits, I can't say much. Gotta love the 'fro, though! Another of those artists who became a one-hit wonder TWICE (In other words, in two different eras)
Information Society-I played "What's On Your Mind" a lot when I was DJing. It has a great "club feel". But I don't listen to club music at home. Stil, it's an infectious little tune.
Donnie Iris-Always liked "Ah! Leah!", and of course, "The Rapper" by Jaggerz. I know his two other top 40's, I just can't recall them, I'd need to hear them.
Iron Butterfly-I have that greatest hits CD you mention. Another one of those bands that had several good songs, but people only remember "THAT SONG!!" That album sold TONS of copies, but no one can seem to name ANY of the songs on side 1. Too bad, because there were some really good ones. Their first album, "Heavy", was good too. As for "THAT SONG!!", It's OK, but I don't mind that the single edit is on the greatest hits.. Makes more room for gems like "Flowers And Beads", "Iron Butterfly Theme", and "Unconsious Power".
Iron Maiden-Their image was totally Metal, but to me, their sound and style was more Progressive Rock than metal. I was big into them in High School, but never heard the first two albums (with Paul Di'ano on vocals) until years later. I actually like Paul better than Bruce Dickinson. I've never heard the singer they had in the mid 90's (Blaze Bayley), but I heard he wasn't that great.. These guys are MUSICIANS, and almost every musician I've ever known/played with had tremendous respect for Maiden!
Isley Brothers-Great group with a history going back almost 50 years! I love "That Lady", "Fight The Power", "Harvest For The World" (which was covered by Power Station in '85), and "It's Your Thing".

Some hits and misses on this edition of the list. Janis Ian - Boy were her records played a lot in my house growing up. My mom loves her. "At Seventeen" was a beloved song of mine when I was a teenager - it used to make me cry at my most maudlin, "hate the world lock myself away in my room" moments. Faves: At 17, Bright Lights & Promises, Tea & Sympathy, Light A Light Information Society - "...pure energy..." Total guilty pleasure group for me. I play their first album all the time (hides face sheepishly) They're from Minnesota so they can't be that bad! Faves: What's On Your Mind, Walking Away, their cover of ABBA's Lay All Your Love On Me. Donnie Iris - I know "Love Is Like A Rock" but I never knew who sang it. Fave: that one I guess. Iron Butterfly - Not my cup 'o tea. I've never understood the appeal. Iron Maiden - Ditto for this band, but I respect them for their contribution to Metal. In college my friends and I made up this drinking game that involved using the aces in a deck of cards. My friend Tim would often break into the chorus of "Aces High" or the "Ace of Spades" by Motorhead during particularly drunken moments of the game. Good times... Isley Bros. - Good stuff here. Also played a lot in the house of my childhood. I loved how they used guitar in their songs and could go from funky to ballad in one beat. And the fact that so many of their songs have "parts" to them (like Part I and II) turning them into epics. Faves: It's Your Thing, Footsteps In The Dark, Fight The Power, Groove With You, I Wanna Be With You.

Janis Ian - I really only know "At Seventeen", but I really like it. Never really knew that Janis "batted for the other team" but I guess it's not that surprising. Information Society - again, only really know that one hit but good danceable tune Donnie Iris - "Ah Leah" is one tune I still crank when it (very rarely unless I am listening to the Lost 80's lunch on CHUM FM in Toronto) comes on the radio. Iron Butterfly - that Simpsons episode is one of the funniest ones ever I do like Inna Gadda da Vida though - awesome solos in that thing Iron Maiden - not really a metal fan so they don't really register on my radar Isley Brothers - woo hoo!!! Love "This old heart of mine", "Twist and Shout" and "Shout"

I'm not sure if I know "It Must Be Love", I'll have to pull out the CD and give a listen. No, "Iron Maiden" was first, "Killers" was second (IMO, the best Maiden album!), then "Number of The Beast", which was the first thingyinson album LOL.
