Well, well, well, another day.... Jan & Dean-Number two surf act, after the Beach Boys, of course. But when you think about it, they were around FIRST, so maybe there should be a place in the Hall for them! Don't own anything by them, probably because oldie radio has burnt me out on them. Good, talented singers, nonetheless. Faves-Dead Man's Curve, Linda, Honolulu Lulu. Jay & the Americans-Good outfit. Jay had an almost Orbison voice (But not the same). Definitely influenced by the 50s sound. Surprised to see This Magic Moment charted so well in early 69, as that style of music was no longer "hip". Got a greatest hits which covers the goodies. Fave-Walkin' in the Rain (add this to Ken's covers post for me!), She Cried, Come a Little Bit Closer. Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship/Starship-I'm just throwing them all together. I know that will kill Airplane purists who CRINGE over the Starship, but it's easier this way. Band basically went through four stages:psychedelia, mellow groovy 70s, arena rockers, popsters. The Airplane were psychedelic pioneers, that is for certain. Pretty much took Gracie to do it! For me, the mellow 70s and arena rockers are my favorite eras though. Marty Balin had the perfect voice for that mellow period, sounding good on the radio sandwhiched between Seals and Crofts and Boz Scaggs. Amazing how loud and big sounding they got when they added Mickey Thomas! The pop era......eh. So scary stuff there. Faves-Miracles, Stranger, Can't Find Love, With Your Love, Find Your Way Back. Jethro Tull-Best Metal act of 88! BHAHAHAHA!!! I like some of their songs, but these dudes spooked me! Look at the cover of Aqualung! And the lyrics of Hymn 43! Anyone know the story behind that song at all?? Maybe a place in the Hall for them for longevity and original sound? Like I said, like some stuff, hate other stuff. Faves-Teacher, Bungle in the Jungle, Living in the Past. Jets-Not my style at ALL. THIS is one of the reasons I say the weakest period was the late 80s. Dismissable pop fluff like this. No offense to Jet-Heads out there! Faves-I guess Crush on You, if I have to pick one. And you?

Jan and Dean--Like the Beach Boys, Jan and Dean's stuff is just more surfin'/beachin' music I never cared for. I can take those type of songs in small doses, but I'm definitely not a huge fan by any means. No favorites.
Jay and the Americans--Don't know much by them. I do like "Come a Little Bit Closer" and "This Magic Moment". That's about the extent of my knowledge of them.
Jefferson Airplane, et al. I love them in all their incarnations. The Airplane was too d**n cool, and I love the mellowness of the Jefferson Starship days, and even some stuff from the Starship era. Having said that, I saw "Starship" in concert in the mid 80's (forgot to include them under my list of concerts on another post. Oh well.) Worst. Concert. Ever. All the band members were drunk, stoned, or both. They couldn't even stand up straight, let alone remember the words to the songs they were singing. Awful. But, I still like the music. LOL! Lotsa favorites: Somebody to Love, White Rabbit, Crown of Creation, Miracles, Count on Me, Runaway, Jane, Find Your Way Back, We Built This City, Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now, Sara, Beat Patrol.
Jethro Tull--Like you Sat, some songs of theirs I like, others I can't stand. I guess I can take them or leave them. They are quite original, though. Faves: Bungle in the Jungle, Thick As a Brick, Living in the Past.
The Jets. Ick. No favorites.

Jan & Dean - Not bad, but an act I've never really been into that much. Like you, I've gotten kind of burnt out on the bigger hits. Favorites: Ride the Wild Surf, Dead Man's Curve. Jay & the Americans - I'd never thought about it, but now that you point it out, Jay's voice does sound similar to Roy Orbison's. 'Walkin' in the Rain' is great! Other favorites: She Cried, This Magic Moment. Jefferson Airplane/Starship - I agree, their 70's era hits were wonderful. They had such a great sound, perfect for the times. I like 'Somebody to Love' and 'White Rabbit', but other than that I'm not too fond of their Airplane work. And the Mickey Thomas lineup recorded some good songs, but less consistently so than the Balin lineup. Overall, a group I really enjoy. Favorites: With Your Love, Runaway, Miracles, Jane, Ride the Tiger, Count on Me, Be My Lady, Find Your Way Back. Jethro Tull - A group I need to check into more closely. As a former flutist (many years ago ), I've always enjoyed Ian Anderson's flute work. I've been curious about Hymn 43 myself - it is a little unsettling, to say the least! Favorites: Living in the Past, Teacher, Bungle in the Jungle, Up to Me. Jets - Not really my cup of tea. I can listen to them once in a while, but not too often. Favorites: You Got It All, Cross My Broken Heart.

Jan & Dean - Sometimes forgotten as the first surf group, they got over taken by the Beach Boys. Got a live album by them that's ok (hate all the screaming girls in the background). Good music though. Favorites: Surf City, Drag City, Dead Man's Curve, Little Old Lady from Pasadena.
Jay & the Americans - Pretty good group, This Magic Moment being may favorite. Don't know much else about them. Other favorites: Come a Little Bit Closer, Walking in the Rain.
Jefferson Airplane, etc - The Airplane was (imo) one of the supergroups of the 60s. Just a whole bunch of great songs. It's a tribute to them that they were able to continue through the 70s & 80s, change their sound and style. Probably would have been greater had drugs and alcohol not created all the tension in the group. Still, one of the best all-time (my #15). Favorites: Somebody to Love, White Rabbit, Today, Volunteers, Ride the Tiger, Miracles, Light the Sky on Fire, Jane, No Way Out, We Built the City, Sara.
Jethro Tull - One great concert act. Saw them back in the mid 70s. Was introduced to them by a former girl friend who thought Thick as Brick was one great album. Have liked their music ever since. Have several albums & cassettes. Favorites: Living in the Past, Thick as a Brick, Bungle in the Jungle, Locomotive Breath.
Jets - Who?

I have missed these daily opinion queries more than anything from YL. Good to see we've still got a loooooooong way to go! ;D
Jan & Dean: Not much exposure to this surf group compared to The Beach Boys, The Ventures, etc. I do enjoy the few songs that I have heard but wouldn't go out of my way to explore more of their archive. Very, very ironic and unfortunate that "Dead Man's Curve" became somewhat prolific. Favorites = Surf City
Jay & the Americans: Wow, what a voice this guy has. I saw him on an oldies concert on PBS recently and he can still hit the high notes. Again, not a group I've heard much of but thumbs up on what I have. Favorites = This Magic Moment
Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship/Starship: Three very distinct styles and periods for this intriguing San Francisco-based band. Pure psychedlic rock launched them into the public eye during the summer of love in 67 and that material was VERY good IMO. As the seventies dawned they dabbled in a more mature and directed sound but also demonstrated that they could still rock the paint off of the walls ("Jane"). I didn't enjoy the Marty Balin songs as much with the exception of Miracles...felt he was too mellow and incongruent with this bands dynamic persona. By the mid-80's the group was nearing the end of it's chart run and they seemed to take a more formulaic approach, abandoning their roots for more of a ready-made for radio sound that reeked of "sellout". I didn't like any of their hits from this period. Overall a great band however. Favorites = Somebody to Love, White Rabbit, Miracles, Runaway, Jane
Jethro Tull: There aren't too many successful ROCK bands that can include flute solos and not alienate their fans...this is one exception. Top 40 radio didn't like this group but album sales and concert receipts have kept them quite comfortable for 30 years. Unique sound that is a nice change of pace. Favorites = Bungle in the Jungle
The Jets: The best family act of the 80's, which isn't saying much...I mean who can you compare them to, Debarge!?! In retrospect most of it was ridiculously cheesy. Some songs are okay, many others make me cringe. And those Jeri curls...ugh!!! Favorites: You've Got It All, Crush on You

Jan & Dean-A lot of people don't realize that Jan Berry was a genius in his own right, even Brian Wilson said so! There's no telling what he could have done had he not been so reckless. As singers, though, they were nowhere near the Beach Boys. I agree, they should've been in the Hall LONG ago!
Jay & The Americans-I like them, but their music makes me sad for some reason. "Livin' Above Your Head" is probably my favorite song by them. They also did an album called "Capture The Moment" which is really good. Walter Becker and Donald F-A-G-A-N were in their backup band in the later 60's.
"The Jeffersons"-WEEEZY!!! j/k..... I've always loved the Airplane, but didn't get into the Jefferson Starship until recently. I always liked Miracles and Runaway, but hadn't heard much beyond that. I picked up "Gold" and am amazed at how many great songs are on it. I wasn't too crazy about them after Mickey Thomas joined. I saw them on a rock n' roll special (hosted by Howard Hesseman) in '84, when they were still Jefferson Starship, and they did a heavy metal version of "Somebody To Love". Didn't work.... Still, "No Way Out" is cool.. I thought "We Built This City" was a good song, despite the whole "sell-out" vibe they had at the time.
Jethro Tull-I never got into them, but I have friends who worship them. Little known fact, Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath was briefly a member in 1968 (if you've ever seen their performance on The Rolling Stones Rock 'N Roll Circus video, their guitarist is clearly Iommi!)
The Jets-Didn't we already do Debarge? Oh, man, more Jheri curls... Yikes! J/k.... NOT what I was listening to in the 80's..

Great line-up today! Except for Tull, I own at least 1 album by the groups.
Jan & Dean-Just got their twofer album on CD "Dead Man's Curve" and "Popsicle" yesterday--I LOVED playing the "curve" album in grade school! Not quite the Beach Boys, but had mostly feelgood tunes from well before the British invasion right on up to the psychedelic era. These guys are great (never minding Jan's limp), and my mom loves their music as well! Faves: New girl in school (VASTLY ignored "A papa doo ron de ron de do!") Linda (remake of a '47 Ray Noble tune) Dead man's curve Surf city Honolulu lulu Baby talk Popsicle Jennie Lee Drag city It's as easy as 1-2-3 You really know how to hurt a guy Ride the wild surf Bucket T The little old lady from Pasadena (my mom LOVES it, I don't as much) Fiddle around Sidewalk surfin' Batman
Jay & the Americans-Nice sound! They never had a bad record. I was wondering (maybe due to copyright restrictions) that "Some Enchanted Evening" was left off the "Hits" CD I have. Anyway, great lead from Jay Black, fine backing harmonies. Faves: Cara mia (LOVED this since age 6--also knew then a current version by Paul Delicato) Come a little bit closer (LOVE the "jungle birds" effect) Only in America (sounded more 1965 than 1963) This magic moment Let's lock the door (and throw away the key) Walking in the rain Sunday and me Some enchanted evening She cried (not the all-time best debut hit, and the lead singer was Jay Traynor, not Jay Black) Crying Think of the good times
Jefferson Airplane/Starship-my fave today. LOVED ALL incarnations, singers, and sounds, never even considered "sellout" back in the later 80's, but I got sick of "Stop us now" FAST, and didn't like it much again until I got the "Billboard Top Hits 1987" in 1994. Slick has a VERY drugged talking voice, but her singing isn't bad. LOVE most of their album covers, especially in the 80's. Marty was OUTSTANDING in the later 70's, and Mickey really gave songs POWER throughout the 80's. The 2-CD anthology is a must. Faves: Jefferson Airplane-- Somebody to love White rabbit Volunteers Pretty as you feel Ballad of you and me and Pooneil Crown of creation Greasy heart Jefferson Starship-- (Marty) Runaway Miracles With your love Count on me (Mickey) No way out Jane Find your way back Layin' it on the line Stranger Be my lady Starship-- We built this city It's not enough It's not over 'til it's over Nothing's gonna stop us now Sara Beat patrol Tomorrow doesn't matter tonight
Jethro Tull-Good progressive rock! (Heavy metal? WHAT were they THINKING? Anyway, a question on the "Millionaire" show worth a million that wasn't answered on.) Every flute trill is so nice, and if not already, a place in the Hall should come. Tend to lean towards the hits. Faves: Living in the past Bungle in the jungle Aqua lung Cross eyed Mary Hymn 43 Locomotive breath Thick as a brick The whistler A passion play Fallen on hard times Bouree Too old to rock 'n roll, too young to die Kissing Willie Minstrel in the gallery Farm on the freeway Teacher
Jets-Nothing said high school like them! And looking back, I don't regret it. Had "Magic" on cassette", and I recently got their debut album on CD. I almost had a "crush on" Liz Wolfgramm! LOL! Feelgood "family" music, arguably, the Osmonds of the 80's. Still like playing their music today (not QUITE like Cheap Trick and Foreigner, heehee) Faves: Cross my broken heart (Ahh...that CHEESY summer '87!) Crush on you (The only good record in the June 28, 1986 top 5) You got it all (One of the 80's prettiest) Rocket 2 U (LOVED the video) Private number (BERY overlooked) I do you (Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!) Make it real (Not their best, but listenable) Curiosity You can dance The same love
Tomorrow--I LOVE ROCK AND ROLL! ;D

They got a little too hard for me for a while, but I did kinda like their 80's hits, especially Sara and Nothing's gonna stop us now! Jethro Tull: Okay. Living in the past was good. Jets: I was already 40 when I was still lovin' that "kiddie" pop music! I LOVED their softer tunes especially; Make it real and You giot it all. Plus Rocket 2 U, Cross my broken heart, and Crush on you are fine and dandy! And I STILL love "kiddie" pop today! BR
