Finishing up the "J's" already! Howard Jones-Is it me, or did all his songs sound the same?? LOL! Actually had quite a few hits in his day, but he really couldn't last into the 90s, and didn't. Typical 80s pop fluff that I dismiss today, but do bring back memories of Top 40 radio listening with my buddy. Fave-New Song. Tom Jones-Is tight curly hair and an open shirt supposed to be sexy?? To me, he is kindof laughable, but I guess some women then DID think he was sexy. Mostly, his songs just plain ANNOY me. And don't ge me STARTED on his cover of Prince's Kiss with Art of Noise!! Fave-It's Not Unusual. Janis Joplin-The queen of white blues? Whattya think? Janis was one of those people, along with Jimi and Jim (Morrison), you couldn't picture in the their senior years. Then again, back then people were probably not picturing Gracie or Keith Richards lasting this long! Just before they announced the inductees for the Hall the year she went in, I was wracking my brain trying to think of who would go in. I hit myself in the head for not thinking of Janis right away! This lady could sing! Big Brother, Full Tilt and isn't there a Kosmic Blues or something? No matter-those groups or solo, she was great. Influenced so many female singers, it's silly. Faves-Me and Bobby McGee, Move Over, Mercedes Benz. Journey-As HUGE as they were, it's hard to believe that before Escape, they had only ONE top 20 hit, and even that didn't go above 16! Sick of most of the greatest hits cuts (except Anyway You Want it and the 2 soundtrack songs), preferring the album cuts, and the pre-Steve Perry stuff. If you like the songs the radio plays with Greg Rollie sharing lead vocals, I HIGHLY recommend their first three albums, ESPECIALLY Next. They were like THE arena rocker band, and although that is not cool today, it should be remembered for what it was. It was huge at the time, like grunge 10 years later. Should be a place in the Hall for that. Faves-To Play Some Music, Next, Here We Are, Just the Same Way, Walks Like a Lady, Someday Soon, People and Places, Precious Time, Party's Over (Hopelessly in Love), Stone in Love. Judas Priest-Priest makes what I call "generic metal". The type of faceless metal you hear in the background of movies in the 80s whenever their was a scene with some burnout teenager! LOL! Don't be insulted if you are a fan. A big group of my friends LOVE them, and I tell them this all the time. A few decent songs, but overall, they don't do anything for me. Faves-You've Got Another Thing Coming, Living After Midnight, Breaking the Law. And you?

Howard Jones - I agree, his songs do have a similar sound, especially the earlier hits. They have a little bit of a dated quality to them, and haven't aged too well. But having said that, I do still enjoy listening to his music - it brings back a lot of memories of that time. Favorites: Things Can Only Get Better, What is Love?, New Song.
Tom Jones - I've never understood the sex appeal thing with him either - I guess he's okay, but not a guy I would have went wild for. His songs are kind of hit and miss with me, mostly miss. I do love 'It's Not Unusual' and 'She's a Lady', though.
Janis Joplin - Very talented singer. Her voice was so powerful and unique, with a wonderful bluesy quality. Another talent we lost much too soon. Favorites: Me and Bobby McGee, Piece of My Heart.
Journey - Probably my favorite of the arena rock bands. I remember they were hugely popular when I was in junior high and high school. I like pretty much everything I've heard of theirs, although I'm not as familiar with the pre-Steve Perry material as their later work. Great rock! Favorites: Separate Ways (I played this over and over after breaking up with a boyfriend in 9th grade), Who's Crying Now, Don't Stop Believin', Just the Same Way, After the Fall, Send Her My Love, The Girl Can't Help It.
Judas Priest - I remember hearing a LOT of this group during the summer after my senior year of high school, along with Iron Maiden, Ratt and The Scorpions. Not one of my favorite metal groups, but I don't mind them in small doses. Favorites: You've Got Another Thing Coming (still like to crank this in the car!), Turbo Lover.

Well let's See :
Howard Jones - The only tune I ever remember hearing is No One is To Blame - but what a great tune , excellent drumming by Phil Collins , great keyboard sound - just great all around production on this one . I remember reading that his albums were quite uneven and that all you really needed was his best - of CD - is that true? Faves : No One is To Blame
Tom Jones - He's probably had more panties thrown at him than anyone! LOL, yup old swivel hips the women sure loved him alright. I'm not a huge fan by any means although I do remember hearing a few tunes when I was a kid. It's Not Unusual is not a bad tune . Faves: It's Not Unusual
Janis Joplin - I like a few of her songs , there's no doubt she was a big influence for many up and coming singers.Still very tragic that we lost Jimi , Janis and Jim all in such a short period of time. Faves: Move Over , Try (just a little bit harder) and Piece Of My Heart.
Journey - So much talent in this band - geat musicianship ( Greg Rollie , Aynsley , Steve Smith , Neil Schon etc) . Great Rock and Roll - Faves : Feeling That Way / Anytime , Lights , Nickel and Dime (some FINE guitar playing on this) , Lovin' Touchin ' Squeezin ' , Wheels in The Sky , Faithfully , Stone In Love , Keep on Runnin' , Next , I'll Be Alright Without You , Walks Like a Lady , Anyway You Want It , After The Fall , Only The Young . The Party's Over ( Hoplessly in Love) , Something To Hide and People and Places
Judas Priest - I'm not really that familar with them other than You've Got Another Thing Comin ' Faves : You Got Another Thing Comin'

I am guessing there were a lot of girls who played that song for that reason back then!

I still remember the Tom Jones songs that my sisters used to play. I was little by then, but he was very good looking to me, lol. Journey- I was and are a big fan. To me, they had their best years on the early 80's. They split to soon and left us, their fans, wanting for more. Judas Priest- yeah, one of those metal bands. I wasn't crazy with their music, but a lot of friends in our group were fans. My husband had one of their tape. Yes, I was forced to listen to it every time we went out in his car. ;D

I GUESS he sounds like Perry, but it's just NOT the same.

1. Howard Jones - ?
2. Tom Jones - One the radio, his songs were ok. Having to watch his TV show, that was bad. Favorites: Green Green Grass of Home, She's a Lady, Say You'll Stay until Tomorrow.
3. Janis Joplin - Janis just plain rocked. One of the elite female rockers of the 60's (Grace Slick being another one). Rocked, sang ballads, and the blues, all in one great package. To bad she enjoyed her Southern Comfort and drugs more than here music. A talented lady lost way to soon. Favorites: Down on My, Cry Baby, Piece of My Heart, Me and Bobby McGee, Ball & Chain, Mercedes Benz
4. Journey - Didn't really get into these guys until they had been around 4 or 5 years. Kind of mixed about Journey. Some of their music is good, but never really could get into them like other late 70s/early 80s rock. I kind of go in streaks of listening to and liking Journey and then I just stop listening for a while. Anyway, a wishy-washy answer. Favorites: Don't Stop Believing, Separate Ways, Any Way You Want It.
5. Judas Priest - Have a album by them. Favorites: Living After Midnight, Breaking the Law.

Howard Jones--Not bad. I was never into that type of music, but he had a couple of songs I enjoyed listening to. What is Love and No One is to Blame are probably my faves by him. Things Can Only Get Better is also pretty good. Tom Jones--Another one of my mom's favorites. And my crazy aunt (you know the one, Sat), absolutely loves this guy, so I grew up listening to his music. He actually has some songs I don't mind hearing occasionally. She's a Lady, Delilah, Darlin', Green Green Grass of Home...there's just a lot of memories associated with these songs. Janis Joplin--The originator of the tough, bluesy, ballsy, rocker chick that I am such a fan of. So of course, Janis is right up there on my list of favorites. Used to crank her albums up to eleven in my room when I was a teen, much to my mom's dismay, I'm sure. LOL! And how cool was it that Melissa inducted her into the Hall! Faves: Move Over, Cry Baby, Tell Mama, Mercedes Benz (always makes me smile), Down on Me, Try, Piece of My Heart, Summertime, and (of course) Me & Bobby McGee. Journey--Love 'em. A lot. In all incarnations, but espeially the Steve Perry years. I really enjoy his voice. Faves: Wheel in the Sky, Lights, Any Way You Want It, Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin', Still They Ride, Walks Like a Lady, I'll Be All Right Without You, Don't Stop Believin', Girl Can't Help It...and many more. Judas Priest--Don't know them well, except that Beavis and Butthead crack me up when they're jamming to "Breaking the Law". LOL! ;D

I'm in a perfectly good mood, there's just no one here who rocks my world today...so excuse the grumpy, cynical tone of my reviews. Just a weak day for artists that I like. Howard Jones: Must have had the same hair stylist as Limahl and the guy from Flock of Seagulls. Mediocre songs from a mediocre talent. I have come to like his music LESS over the years. Favorites = New Song Tom Jones: Yes that "Kiss" remake with Art of Noize was hideous. Who came up with THAT idea!?! This Welshman's songs are very Vegas-y and not my cup of tea. Favorites = It's Not Unusual Janis Joplin: "Pearl" was a very troubled young woman. My opinion is that she is highly overrated. Bluesy at her best but ultimately cringe-inducing at her worst. The voice just grates on one's nerves sometimes. Favorites = Piece of My Heart, Mercedes Benz Journey: Believe me, I really, really tried to like Journey. Bought their albums, knew all the band member's names and even those of some of their wives, requested their songs on the radio...still, something just left me cold about them and I think it was that generic, faceless arena rock quality that made them distinctively bland...just like Styx, REO Speedwagon, Foreigner and others of the arena rock genre. When they rocked they were good, when they recorded ballads they sounded sappy rather than romantic. Gosh darnit...I really wanted to like them. Favorites = Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin', Seperate Ways, Don't Stop Believing, The Party's Over (Hopelessly in Love) Judas Priest = Now that I think about it, seems like Rob Halford or whatever his name is was the only frontman of a metal band at the time that did NOT have long hair...but BOOOOOY could this band rock! I like the few songs which I have given a serious listen to but when it comes to favorites there is only one worth mentioning... Favorites = You've Got Another Thing Coming Blah, I'm ready for tomorrows list

Howard Jones-I LOVED his first two albums (Human's Lib, Dream Into Action), but haven't liked a thing he's done since. Still, good 80's synth pop.
Tom Jones- Oh yes! I want to go to his concert, and throw my boxer shorts at him LOL!!! I'm not a huge fan, but I'd take him over Englebert. At least Tom had "She's A Lady"!
Janis Joplin-A legend. A great talent. But you know what irks me? Go to ANY small town bar where they have live bands or open-mike nights/karaoke and there's ALWAYS some woman there trying to be Janis Joplin (onstage and off!!). EVERY TOWN has at least one!!
Journey-I liked the "Raised On Radio" album in High School, but that album is kinda depressing. It's a "My girlfriend just broke up with me" album. "Escape" and "Frontiers" were huge, but I never cared for either. I should really check out their pre-Perry albums. I liked Neil and Greg in Santana.
Judas Priest-One of my favorite Metal bands. Rob always sounded good, K.K. Downing and Glenn Tipton were a great double guitar attack. I listened to "Screaming For Vengance" and "Defenders Of The Faith" a lot in High school. I still have several albums on vinyl, but on CD I only have the double compilation "Metal Works"

Tom Jones->>Is tight curly hair and an open shirt supposed to be sexy?? To me, he is kind of laughable, but I guess some women then DID think he was sexy.<< Wowzy dowzy!!! ;D What a GOLDEN opportunity to mention (For the first time here on "The Click"!) one of our neighbors when I was in my elementary school years: She was absolutely, pasionately IN LOVE with Tom Jones!!!! She LITERALLY used to sit in front of their tv and cry (Sob!) when he was on (ABC-TV) every single solitary Friday night!!!! But one day he disappointed her: Her husband took her to Vegas to see Tom in person and when they came back they were both REALLY upset because they contended that they had been ripped off by a phony Tom (A pretender, as it were) I wonder if she still loves Tom... Anyway, last year Bravo ran a special of his--filmed in Europe. I have to say he sounded GREAT! Oh! I also want to add that I LOVE watching the segment of the Ed Sullystone show in which Tom sings "Delilah": I love the way the conductor REALLY gets into the music!!! ;D Janis Joplin-I'll be shot--but I've never really cared that much for her voice. I do, however, like "Mercedes Benz" (And a couple of others) Journey-I like Steve Perry's voice, but I'm not familiar enough with their music to name any faves...

Man, you read my mind (from my dream last night what you were gonna do today... ;D)!
Howard Jones-Have a hits CD, but there isn't a whole bunch I like. After 17 years, "Blame" is STILL WAAAAAYYYY overplayed on the radio and those public places! MAKE IT STOP!!!! But some great ones, nevertheless from the fine English lad. Faves: You know I love you...Don't you? Things can only get better New song Look mama Lift me up (He still had a top 40 hit in the 90's! This from '92) Everlasting love What is love Life in one day (The intro sounds VERY "Kansas-ish") The prisoner Like to get to know you well
Tom Jones-and have his Hits CD as well! Strangely, my dad likes him more than my mom. But he had a MUCH better voice than his contemporary, Engelbert. Killer shows from what I heard. Faves: She's a lady (It looks like) I'll never fall in love again It's not unusual Daughter of darkness Love me tonight What's new pussycat Detroit City Without love (There is nothing) Green, green grass of home Thunderball Delilah I (Who have nothing) Help yourself A few others...
Janis Joplin-I can tolerate her. But my dad DESPISES her with a PASSION. Cool "gimmick" to her singing, heard some funny "typewriter" demos on a box set I lent one time. Faves: Me & Bobby McGee Down on me Piece of my heart Cry baby Mercedes Benz Kozmic blues
Journey-my fave today. Not a MONSTROUS fan, but I've never gotten tired of' em. Escape has an easy place in my top 500 all-time albums, and "Frontiers" and "Infinity" are great, too. Does anyone else remember their video gane from 1983? I LOVED it! Played it LOTS at Aladdin's castle; I even got to the "Herb the Roadie" concert crowd stage once. Anyway, they should get a spot in the Hall before too long. Faves: BE GOOD TO YOURSELF (Forever and always, right from day 1! Crank it to 11 and rip the knob off!!!! LOVE the Loverboy-inspired keyboards and Neal's KILLER 1 1/2 minute guitar solo at the end!) Don't stop believin' Who's crying now Lovin' touchin' squeezin' After the fall Only the young Open arms Separate ways Any way you want it Girl can't help it Faithfully Wheel in the sky Ask the lonely Suzanne (VERY forgotten today; top 20 song) Just the same way When you love a woman The party's over (I SWEAR this was a studio recording tacked on to the live album) Too late Anytime If there's any hit I forgot, I'm probably either burnt out on it or sick of it.
Judas Priest-Iron Maiden and them ruled 80's metal! My mistake, this was K.K. Downing's group--still the great Fling V player! Have their "Vengeance" CD, and British Steel and Turbo are killer as well-I played their music a lot in college. They really know how to rock, and could get a place in the Hall, just because they really defined a genre in the 80's. Faves: You've got another thing coming Livin' after midnight Locked in Breaking the law The hellion/Electric eye Some heads are gonna roll Turbo lover Screaming for vengeance Heading out to the highway Diamonds and rust A touch of evil Sinner Love you to death Out in the cold Johnny B. Goode Metal gods Freewheel burning Wild nights, hot and crazy days Ram it down Victim of changes Hell bent for leather Eat me alive The sentinel Exciter

Howard Jones ~ back in the day, wow did I ever love him!! But I totally agree with Boogieman that I like him less and less as the years go on, and about that hair!! Favorite, What is Love?
Tom Jones ~ What is it about this guy that makes women my mother's age throw their scivvies at him?? Personally... I don't get it. And even though you didn't, I loved his cover of Kiss with the Art of Noise!! Favorites, Kiss, Delilah.
Janis Joplin ~ Another one that I just don't get. She seems SO overrated to me... She can't even sing, she just screeches and bellows, and not in a good way. I wonder if she hadn't died so young if she would have become such an icon...
Journey ~ I love these guys!! TOTALLY cheesy and made some of the worst videos ever, but there's something about Steve Perry's voice that I dig. Favorites, Girl Can't Help It, Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin', Only the Young, Who's Crying Now, Send Her My Love.
Judas Priest ~ You want to hear something scary? The only reason that I even remember who these guys are is because of an episode of Beavis and Butthead featuring the video for Breaking the Law.
And because I'm just that lame... every time I make a minor traffic infraction, like running a yellow light and having it turn red in the middle, I sing that to myself. ;D
