Three suggestions today! Let's go! Indigo Girls-This suggestion came from their biggest fan, Kathyb! The ONLY thing I know about these ladies is they are a big part of Lillith Fair, and they are lesbians. I'm sorry, but it's true!! LOL! Kingston Trio-This suggestion is from Dave. Again, know almost nothing about these guys, except they were a big part of the folk movement in the late 50s-early 60s, and their signature song was Tom Dooley. The Knack-This suggestion is from Dave AND Kathy! LOL! I only know My Sharona. No, I don't know Good Girls Don't. I DO remember reading that they were supposed to be the next Beatles. I want to ask those who said that if the stuff they were smoking is still good, cuz I'd like a hit! Kool and the Gang-Kinda weird to think they had a big hit with Jungle Boogie way back in 73/74! They even had Hot 100 enteries back in 69! They are such an 80s band to me. Talented enough though. Coulda been a grunge band with all those one word song titles in the mid 80s! My wife still has her Emergency tape. Faves-Get Down on it, Jungle Boogie, Celebration. Billy J. Kramer & the Dakotas-One of the more whimpy bands of the Invasion. They would be like 4th tier! LOL! A Brian Epstein band, and he had John & Paul crank out hits for them. I never heard From a Window and I'll Keep You Satisfied though, so I may just have to pick up a compilation! I remember reading Brian probably would have wanted the Beatles image more like these guys-lightweight and whimpy. Not surprising, given Brian's "inclinations." (What's with all the gay references today??? ) Faves-Bad to Me, Little Children. And you?

Indigo Girls - I can't say I'm familiar with their music.
Kingston Trio - I've always liked the traditional sound of this folk trio. At one time, I think John Stewart (who later had a hit with 'Gold') was a member. Favorites: Tom Dooley, A Worried Man, Where Have All the Flowers Gone, Greenback Dollar.
The Knack - I know 'My Sharona' and 'Good Girls Don't', but that's about it. LOL about the Beatles comparison! I remember reading that too!
Kool and the Gang - I've always enjoyed their music. Like you, I think of them more as an 80's band, when they experienced the most success, but they had some good hits back in the 70's as well. Their Emergency album is great! Favorites: Misled, Fresh, Ladies Night, Too Hot, Tonight, Get Down on It, Big Fun.
Billy J. Kramer & the Dakotas - Not bad, but as you say, definitely not one of the better groups to come out of the British Invasion. I only know 'Bad to Me' and 'Little Children', which are okay.

Kingston Trio-I grew up on these guys! Besides Tom Dooley (A pretty morbid song, actually) my favorites of there's are "Where Have All The Flowers Gone" and "MTA" (I used to really worry about that poor man stuck on that MTA!) The Knack-Well, I know both of those songs--but my fave is "My Sharona" Btw: Oprah had an episode on which she had the girls who inspired songs, and one of them was the "real Sharona". Kool and the Gang-this group ALWAYS reminds me of AstroWorld in Houston, Tx because the day we were there in the early 70s the speakers kept playing "Hollywood Swingin'". And of course "Celebration" reminds me of every sporting event--especially those on the winning side. (LOL!)

Indigo Girls- Heard of them; don't know their music.
Kingston Trio- They were a HUGE part of the late 50s folk music scene. Two of the first five or six 33 1/3 rpm vinyl that I ever owned were "The Kingston Trio" and "Kingston Trio From the Hungry I" Still have them, but unfortunately, rarely listen to them. John Stewart was a member, but not an original one. Original Group was Dave Guard, Nick Reynolds, and Bob Shane. Stewart replaced Guard, who had been the lead singer and spokesman. Faves include: Tom Dooley, M.T.A. (actually a cover of an old Boston political jingle), Greenback Dollar, Sloop John B (about nine years before the Beach Boys), They Call The Wind Moriah. The Knack- I remember the "next Beatles" hype -- didn't last long though. Faves; (The only two I know) My Sharona, Good Girls Don't.
Kool and the Gang - Not among my mainstream favorite groups, but I wouldn't shut them off the radio either. The group definitely has staying power. Faves: Get Down On It, Celebration, Joanna.
Billy J. Kramer & the Dakotas- Early on in the British Invasion, I wouldn't call this band any lower than 2nd Tier. They were pretty hot. "Little Children" was huge in 1964. I don't recall anyone calling them wimpy back then. There were the good guys, led by the Beatles, and the bad a$$es led by the Stones. Billy and the Dakotas were firmly in the Beatles camp, but no one laughed at them. The first time I ever heard a record of theirs it was "Do You Want To Know a Secret" which was a minor US hit in the summer of 1963. Back then, I had barely even heard of the Beatles, and didn't know that Lennon and McCartney had written the song. Faves: Little Children, Do You Want To Know A Secret, Bad To Me, I'll Keep You Satisfied.

Who else was on the Oprah show?

At one point, some people thought they'd bigger than the Beatles. But in retrospect, overall, they would be lower than the Who and Stones. (And I LOVE the DC5!)

Indigo Girls-BLAAAH!
Kingston Trio-The fathers of the Indigo Girls! NO, I'm kidding!! I like the early 60's folk scene. If I'd been alive then, I would have been WAY more into this stuff than Bobby Rydell or Chubby Checker. My dad had some Kingston Trio albums. They had great harmonies, probably the most influential of the folk groups.
The Knack-They killed disco! (kidding again) "Sharona" bumped Chic out of #1 and it seemed almost symbolic.. I bought "Get The Knack" on vinyl a few years ago and I liked it. It was just good 70s power pop, kind of like Cheap Trick. They should've never been promoted as "The New Beatles", that was a mistake. "But the little girls understood........."
Kool & The Gang-My fave today. I liked "Hollywood Swinging" as a kid (but I could never understand how he could go to the concert of the band he was IN!). But Their hits kept coming as I was growing up, "Ladies Night", "Too Hot", "Celebration", "Get Down On It", "Tonight", "Joanna", "Misled"....... My favorite, though, is their lesser-known hit from late '82-early '83 called "Let's Go Dancin' (Ooh, La La La)"
Billy J. Kramer & The Dakotas-Early Merseybeat sound, very pleasant. Nothing I've investigated too deeply, but better than some of the other British invasion bands.

Hoo boy...not much to be excited about today Indigo Girls: I am familiar with them only because they are from Atlanta and hence developed a regional following on college radio in the early 90's. They also performed at my (cough) esteemed institute of higher learning West Georgia College (Harvard of the South ). Not really my style of music. They use acoustic guitar and vocal harmony for a very folk-oriented sound. And yes, they are quite popular with the mullets and Birkenstocks crowd. (I'm going to burn for that one...yow! ) Favorites = Closer to Fine Kingston Trio: Hang your head low, Tom Dooley. That's all I know... Favorites = Tom Dooley The Knack: "The next Beatles" as reported by certain overzealous media reporters when they burst onto the scene mid-summer of '79 . Then again maybe NOT! I did buy their album and enjoyed most of the songs, even after hearing "My Sharona" for the 28,452nd time that Autumn. And then, like so many other "next Beatles", they were gone from the scene. Favorites = My Sharona, Good Girls Don't, Baby Talks Dirty Kool & the Gang: Talented and very large band that transcended their funk origins to become one of the most popular purveyors of smooth R&B through the mid 80's. Personally I'd rather gargle with shards of glass than to ever hear "Celebration" again but most of their other work stands the test of time. I like these guys, especially with James "J.T." Taylor grooving on lead vocals. Fantastic in concert as well! Favorites = Hollywood Swingin', Jungle Boogie, Ladies Night, Too Hot, Big Fun, Joanna, Fresh, Take My Heart, Cherish, Emergency!, Get Down On It Billy J. Kramer & the Dakotas: Heard the name but never heard the music....

Hi Adam Indigo Girls - I know about the same as you do Kingston Trio - I know a few tunes by these folk legends . I 've even sold a few singles at our record shows . Faves: Tom Dooley , Greenback Dollar and The Tijuana Jail. The Knack -I also remember reading about the Beatles comparisons back in '79. I still love that debut! - have it on good ol' vinyl and their '98 release Zoom rocks! (with the great Terry Bozzio on drums) is chock full of GREAT power pop tunes . I also have the best of CD - Retrospective . Faves include : Boys Go Crazy , My Sharona , their awesome cover of No Matter What , Mister Magazine , Pop is Dead , Rocket O' Love , Good Girls Don't , Hold On Tight and Don't Let Go , One Day at a Time and Can't Put a Price on Love. Kool and The Gang - They were around a long time. I feel the same way , even though they had released stuff back in '73 / '74 I still consider them more an 80's band for some reason . Faves : Celebration , Ladies Night , Jungle Boogie and Joanna. Billy J Kramer & The Dakotas - Even though they were light weight compared to The Beatles , Kinks, Stones etc . I still really enjoyed alot of their tunes . And from what I've read The Dakotas did not get along all that great with Billy. Faves: Bad To Me , From a Window , I'll Keep You Satisfied and Little Children. Check Your instant messages:)

Indigo Girls--not a big fan, and I was a little surprised when they got nominated for a 1989 New Artist Grammy (with Milli Vanilli! ) I have "Galileo" on a folk compilation, and their debut "Closer to fine" was okay. I've heard a few others; don't recall the titles. Kingston Trio--quite a big fan, thanks to my Dad (who had at least 6 of their LP's in the early 60's). It really is good music, proving that 1959-1963 was not THAT bad of a time in music. But that's just me. Fun singalongs. Faves: MTA Tom Dooley A worried man Where have all the flowers gone Greenback dollar The tijuana jail Reverend Mr. Black El Matador Scotch and soda Bad man blunder Jane, Jane, Jane Quite a few others... Knack--why they didn't last long is WAY beyond me. They had such a GREAT sound; I wanted them to be the biggest 80's band in the fall of '79 (Wishful thinking!) At least they had some reunions. Such a wonderful power pop sound. "Get the Knack" is A MUST!!! The next two albums and the reunion albums just didn't quite compare, but from what I've heard, they must be all right Faves: My Sharona (Another biggie I never get sick of!!!) Good girls don't Frustrated Baby talks dirty That's what the little girls do Maybe tonight Siamese twins Heartbeat Pay the devil (OOO baby ooo) (She's so) Selfish Oh Tara Rocket o' love Your number or your name Let me out Can't put a price on love Lucinda (I think I listed all the "Get the Knack" tunes, LOL) Kool & the Gang--My fave today. Not very familiar with the name until the fall of '79 with "Ladies night", they pretty much owned the chart in the 80's. Most of the albums were big, but why "As one" wasn't as successful is WAAAAAAAAYYY beyond me. Have "As One" as well as "Ladies Night" albums on vinyl, as well as a 70's compilation, and an 80's compilation (with remixes). Not to mention them on a few various artists compilations. Most of the music gives me such a good feeling. Even their mid 80's ballads were good. One of the best ever! Faves: (Could be a long list!) Big fun Celebration Get down on it Emergency (ROCKIN' guitar!) Ladies night Jungle boogie Too hot Hollywood swinging Victory Cherish Joanna Spirit of the boogie Take my heart Let's go dancin' Tonight Fresh Stone love Funky stuff Open sesame And much more... Billy J. Kramer & the Kramers-not as good as Gerry & the Pacemakers, less fun than Herman's Hermits or Freddie & the Dreamers, and not as powerful as the Mindbenders or the Zombies. That said, I LOVE their 4 top 40 hits. I guess I'm a big British invasion nut! "Little Children" and "Bad to Me" is one of the rock era's best 2-sided hits!

Indigo Girls--Thanks for including them, Sat. I feel like I'm alone in the Music Click in my appreciation of their music, though. But that's ok. I just went and looked. I have 8 of their CD's. Jeez, I didn't think I had that many. LOL! Anyway, I love their harmonies--the blending of Amy and Emily's voices is very pretty. I enjoy their folky, bluesy, rocky, poppy style of music. I think that covers all the bases. ;D I'll just list a few faves: Become You; Shame on You; Cold Beer and Remote Control; Hammer and a Nail; Hey Kind Friend; Get Out the Map; Galileo; Least Complicated; Kid Fears; Land of Canaan; Strange Fire; and Closer to Fine.
Kingston Trio--I've always enjoyed their music, although I haven't listened to it for years. Folk music is one of my favorite genres of music. I should dig out my Kingston Trio CD and have a listen! Faves: Greenback Dollar; Scotch and Soda; Where Have all the Flowers Gone; Tom Dooley.
The Knack--Mucho memories of listening to their debut constantly in '79. I was a sophomore in high school, and the Knack was just so cool back then. Of course, I bought their subsequent albums, too. BTW--wasn't the title "Get the Knack" supposed to be a variation of "Meet the Beatles", and aren't the guys standing in the same positions on the back cover of "Get the Knack" that the Beatles are on "Meet the Beatles"? Seems like I remember something to that effect. Maybe somebody can set the record straight for me, in case I don't know what I'm talking about. ;D
Kool and the Gang--I forgot they had so many hits, since pretty much all you ever hear is "Celebration". Good group. Nice, feel good music. Great for parties!
Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas--Sorry. I don't remember them at all.

Indigo Girls - ?
Kingston Trio - Just a liitle before my time. I know of Tom Dooley & MTA, but nothing else
Knack - Made a big splash with My Sharona, and then faded just as quickly.
Kool & the Gang - What a great R&B/Funk band. May have been an "80s band" but Jungle Boogie & Hollywood Swinging were typical mid-70s pre-disco top 40 fare. When I get in the mood for some "old school" funk, I put these guys on with my KC & the Sunshine Band, Average White Band, Earth Wind & Fire and the other funk bands from the 70s. Favorites (not already mentioned): Ladies Night, Celebration, Joanna.
Billy J. Kramer & the Dakotas - A minor blip on the invasion radar. Favorite: Little Children
