I have such a hard time with this. Personally, I prefer Elton John. He's such a sentimental favorite for me. It's who I grew up listening to. I realize that Billy Joel is the greater talent, since he is lyrically as magnificent as he is musically. And I suppose Elton wouldn't have gotten nearly as far as he did without Bernie Taupin. So who do you prefer? Or do they both suck?

Although I enjoy a lot of Billy's songs, I prefer Elton as well. Something about his music has always struck a chord more strongly with me, and like you, I have memories of listening to his songs when I was growing up.

Good topic!!
For all his fruitiness and flamboyency, I like Elton better, and actually find Joel's music to be whimpier.
What I like about Elton is mostly album cuts, and I really don't think much of his career after the Kiki duet. But MAN, he put out some good stuff in those early years!
Hey athompsen! Why not make this your regular feature?? I like it!!

I prefer the earlier stuff from both, but would give Elton John a slight edge.

It's a tough one, athopmsen. Two of my favorite artists. The only way I can decide is to think of the fact that Elton has more songs that I would put among my top faves than Billy. So I also pick Elton.

I guess it's up to me to be the lone dissenting opinion.
I have nothing against Elton personally. I think his charity work is phenomenal.
I just don't like his songs. Pretty much at all. I only like Philadelphia Freedom, Don't Go Breakin' My Heart, and Island Girl. Most purists will say those aren't his better efforts.
I can't get in to the whole Bernie Taupin era. Songs like Levon just grate on me. And around here, Elton is this massive presence, always on the radio, who can do no wrong. I've gotten many an ugly look because I don't care for him.
I've only met one other person in my life who didn't like him as much as I did, and I married him.
I love Billy Joel. I own lots of his cd's and he has many songs among my favorites. So does my husband (coincidentally, he's from Allentown).

I'm going to go with Elton. Loved his early stuff and most of what he did in the 80s. With Billy, it's just a few songs here & there that I like.
