Ending the N's, beginning the O's! Nitty Gritty Dirt Band-One of many country rock bands of the early 70s. Their only top 40 hit with their full moniker was Bojangles. Subsequent hits came as the Dirt Band. I picked up a budget compilation so I could here their takes on House at Pooh Corner and Some of Shelly's Blues. Both good, but I'd rather listen to Loggins and Messina & the Monkees respectively. Faves-Mr. Bojangles, House at Pooh Corner, Some of Shelly's Blues. Ted Nugent-I didn't have any older brothers who listened to him growing up, so I only knew Cat Scratch Fever, his big "hit". Got made fun of years later by older guys for not knowing his FM songs. I like him, but for only a CD's worth. Loved Journey to the Center of the Mind with the Amboy Dukes! Still haven't heard Great White Buffalo! Faves-Stranglehold, Free For All, Dog Eat Dog. Ric Ocasek-Ok H2, I opted for the Cars' OTHER O singer!  I remember Something to Grab For getting a good amount of MTV play, and recently got it on tape from VH-1 Classic. His follow up single, Emotion in Motion was EH to me. Fave-Something to Grab For. Billy Ocean-Nope, sorry. I know he had a string of biggies there, but I just don't like em. I don't find Suddenly to be a great romantic song at all. Have better memories of making fun of the songs with my buddy. I actually DO own the 45 of When the Going Gets Tough....but I found out when I got home that I liked it because they used it on wrestling once with a bunch of different clips. (Remember that Pete, on a year end Saturday Night's Main Event??) Ohio Players-Now this was mainstream funk! I only know their 2 number one's. Decent songs, but I don't need to own them. But I do love singing the "Love Rollercoaster!!!" echo part! Faves-Love Rollercoaster, Fire. And you? |

OK, Adam. Let's see if I can put down any of your faves today. ;D Nitty Gritty Dirt Band- OK, we can start here. (This is gonna sound like a repeat of yesterday  ) Mr. Bojangles is in my all time top 250. Great folk song. It was written and sung by Jerry Jeff Walker. About 10 or so years later, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band covered it. IMO, it wasn't even on the same planet. NGDB sounded like, well like.... Fat Elvis ;D - (Not really, but I really didn't care for their version. Ted Nugent - Well, I'm an "older guy" - but I don't know much about Ted Nugent. I know Cat Scratch Fever, and I guess it's OK. I am familiar with Journey To The Cenrer of the Mind and that's a good song. Ric Ocasek - I'm really not a big Cars fan (my Benjamin Orr comments earlier were more or less Shane-like; there's really only one "O" I'm waiting for and he's not a Car). As for Ric .. I really like Emotion in Motion even tho the title is a little silly. I like the melody, mainly. Billy Ocean- Oh, man! We are having our problems this week! Suddenly is one of my all time faves. I kinda like There'll Be Sad Songs and Outta My Dreams also. Ohio Players- OK. We agree here (whew!) I kinda like Love Rollercoaster and Fire also, but they're not top 250 or anything. I do own them, however. BTW, did you intentionally skip Ohio Express?  -- and checking my own list of Os it looks like Monday may be the day for the BIG O. |

(Nitty Gritty) Dirt Band: I really like this group and need to explore their music beyond the handful of hits. Mister Bojangles puts a lump in my throat...and I'm not the type to get all sentimental. Should have had more chart success.
Favorites = Mister Bojanges, An American Dream
Ted Nugent: The Motor City Madman. This guy has an opinion on EVERYTHING and I wouldn't be surprised to see him enter the political arena ala Jessie Ventura. Back in the 70's I remember he looked like a caveman or a savage...always had an insane look in his eyes. Cat Scratch Fever is a great read-between-the-lines song. As for Damn Yankees all I can say is WHY?!?

Ric Ocasek: Didn't like his solo work...detested "Emotion in Motion". Hmmm...Paulina Porizkova, nice pull dude. No favorites
Billy Ocean: Liked him at first but grew VERY tired of him around the time he started doing lots of recording for soundtracks. In retrospect he wasn't that great...he just had that poppy mid-80's style that radio clamored for. "Get Out of My Dreams, Get Into My Car" was one of the worst of the decade. But I could really dig "Carribean Queen" before it became overplayed.
Favorites = Carribean Queen, Loverboy, Suddenly
Ohio Players: Could lay the funk down, indeed! Had some really risque album covers (for that time period) as well. The Red Hot Chili Peppers did a very good remake of "Love Rollercoaster". One of the better funk bands of the seventies, along with Parliament/Funkadelic, Kool & the Gang (pre-James "JT" Taylor) and Sly and the Family Stone.

Faves - An American Dream and Mr. Bojangles Ted Nugent - I remember hearing "Cat Scratch" alot as a kid - my middle brother had the 8 - track - he had another album of Ted's as well - State of Shock - I remember it because Ted did a version of The Beatles I Want To Tell You - I seem to recall it was pretty good too but it's been ages since I've heard it I picked up the Ted Nugent album on vinyl a few years ago for a $1 because I wanted the song Hey Baby - my #1 fave from Ted Faves: Amboy Dukes - Journey To The Center Of The Mind and Baby Please Don't Go Ted "Solo" - Hey Baby , Cat Scratch Fever , Just What The Doctor Ordered , Stranglehold ,Where Have You Been All My Life and Stormtroopin' . Ric Ocasek - I really liked Emotion in Motion when it came out . Found the single a while back . It's the only one of his solo hits I'm familiar with. Faves - Emotion in Motion Ohio Players -They had some great 70's funk hits. Their also probably best remembered for their risque album covers . The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band had a Top 40 song before "Bojangles", and that was "Buy for Me the Rain". My favorite song by the group. They've had some great collaborative albums- "Stars & Stripes Forever" and "Will the Circle Be Unbroken", but they have so many guest country artists performing,I'm not sure you can say it's the band doing the material. Still, they gave exposure to a lot of people the big record companies had neglected.

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band-One of the biggest shockers of my life was finding their debut album in my GRANDMOTHER'S collection! My grandparents were big band enthusiasts, what were they doing with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band? My brother had a couple of their early albums as well. I seem to recall liking "Buy For Me The Rain", but I can't place the melody offhand. "Mr. Bojangles" is good, I have it on "Have A Nice Day vol. 4"
Ted Nugent-I'm not a big fan of his type of music, but I LOVE his attitude! Give em' hell, Terrible Ted!!
Ric Ocassic-I LOVE the cars, but I've never owned a solo album by him. I like the song "Emotion In Motion", but not as good as the Cars as a group. A lot of people don't remember that THREE of the Cars did solo albums. Elliott Easton did one in '85, I remember the video for "Wearing Down Like A Wheel". Cool tune!
Billy Ocean-"Carribean Queen" was OK. So was "Love Really Hurts Without You" and "Mystery Lady". But I don't care too much for him otherwise. YES!! I do remember WWF used to use clips of current hits when going to commercial breaks. I specifically remember them using "When The Going Gets Tough" on Superstars of Wrestling. Other songs I remember them using were "Stages" by ZZ Top and "Something About You" by Level 42. Then all of a sudden they stopped using music. Either licensing was too expensive, or maybe it was hard for them to have a tough image when using Whitney Houston's "How Do I Know" as a segue! LOL
Ohio Players-Great 70's funk! I don't own a collection, but I have all the hits. I especially love "Skin Tight", it's kind of like Chicago goes R&B!

Let's see...
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band--nice country pop/rock. And their first HOT 100 hit "Buy me..." just missed the top 40 (45?). Grew up with "Bojangles" and it's never worn off on me. And I also liked the 2 top 40 hits in '80 "An American dream" and "Make a little magic".
Ted Nugent--Like Pete, Don't care a lot about the music, but love his attitude! I do like "Cat scratch fever" and "Wango tango", as well as the GREAT guitar solo on "Journey to...".
Ric Ocasek--Repeat after me: O-CASS-ik, not O-kay-sik! Man this BUGGED me throughout the 80's, and even Ric will tell you so! Of his 3 HOT 100 solo hits, ironically, "Emotion" is my least fave of them. "Grab" sounds MUCH like a Cars tune, and "True to you" is SOOOOOOO overlooked!
Billy Ocean--Almost a tie for my fave today, but some of Billy's ballads don't impress me. He did receive slightly too much exposure in the 80's indeed. But I can't knock him!

Ohio Players--My fave today. Amazingly, I've known their 2 #1's since the later 70's, and they got very little AM radio play! But they could lay down that funk! The lead singer tends to sound like Larry Blackmon of Cameo, BTW.

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - Good country/rock band. 'Make a Little Magic' was their best song, IMO, but it's almost never heard on the radio anymore. Favorites: Make a Little Magic, An American Dream, Mr. Bojangles.
Ted Nugent - Very talented guitarist. I've always liked 'Cat Scratch Fever', and 'Stranglehold' is pretty good too, if a little long.
Ric Ocasek - I really like his work with the Cars, but I'm not too crazy about his solo material. 'Emotions in Motion' was okay, I guess.
Billy Ocean - I have mixed feelings about him - some songs I really enjoy, and others I don't care for, probably because they were SO overplayed back then. Favorites: Night, Caribbean Queen, Love Really Hurts Without You, Mystery Lady.
Ohio Players - One of the premier funk bands. I have their greatest hits album Gold on vinyl, and it's packed with great songs! Favorites: Fire, Love Rollercoaster, Sweet Sticky Thing, Skin Tight, Who'd She Coo?
