Two soundtracks that I listened to over and over in my youth. But which was the better of the two?
To me, the first side of Saturday Night Fever has some great songs...most of them by the Bee Gees. I love "If I Can't Have You by Yvonne Elliman, Boogie Shoes by KC & The Sunshine Band and The Trammps "Disco Inferno" is great. But does anyone else like the rest of the album? "Open Sesame" by Kool & The Gang, "Night On Disco Mountain", "Calypso Breakdown" or "A Fifth of Beethoven" ? I never really considered any of those "disco classics". That's where I think the soundtrack falls short.
Grease...it was meant to be a movie based in the 50s...why are there very little traditional rock'n'roll style tracks on this album? So, it's more of a 70's version of a 50's movie. Take away the fact most of the songs are cheesey and corny, the album that makes me feel good. Unlike the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, the filler songs on the Grease soundtrack are really good..."Tears On My Pillow", "Those Magic Changes" and "Blue Moon" by Sha-Na-Na.
So, do you prefer wearing boogie shoes? Or are you born to hand jive?

I'll take Saturday Night Fever any day. I was never a Grease fan (at least of the movie or it's added songs). The thing you have to remember about Grease is that it was a broadway musical written in the 70's about life in the 50's, so it has that cheesy early 70's thing going on. I enjoyed the musical itself. I was not fond of what the movie did to it.
FYI, Grease knocked off Fiddler On The Roof to become the longest running musical of all time, only to be knocked off by A Chorus Line (my favorite of all time), which only recently got knocked off by Cats (one I could do without).

[glow=red,2,300]Although I like Grease a lot, I do prefer Saturday Night Fever's soundtrack (it's one of my favorites out of Mom's record collection). The songs from Grease tend to be a little too cheesy for me, although like the opening title song the best (which if I remember right was by the Bee Gees). I like the movie Grease better than the movie Saturday Night Fever though. [/glow]

It's like your asking me to choose between 2 of my children!!! Seriously, I love both soundtracks for different reasons. Saturday Night Fever - It's all about the Bee Gees who everyone here knows that I love practically above all others. You can't listen to this album and not boogie. Grease - It's ONJ people! With John Travolta! And Sha-Na-Na! Plus, this soundtrack contains one of my all-time favorite songs of lament, "There Are Worse Things I Could Do", sung by the brilliant Stockard Channing.

I've got my boogie shoes on...go figure
Saturday Night Fever and Grease are both GREAT soundtracks. SNF is slightly superior though. I like the following tracks:
Staying Alive How Deep Is Your Love Night Fever More Than a Woman (Bee Gees) If I Can't Have You A Fifth of Beethoven More Than a Woman (Tavares) Jive Talkin' You Should Be Dancing Boogie Shoes Disco Inferno Even some of the obscure calypso-type instrumentals are cool

Close on the theme song - Frankie Vali (from Frankie Vali and the Four Seasons - I think I may have spelled his last name wrong) - the falsetto thing can throw you off The confusion may also be in the fact that it was written by Barry Gibb!

Great topic!
I'm a child of the '50s rather than the '70s,so would naturally identify more with Grease. However, I enjoy both soundtracks (own them both) about equally. I'm a Bee Gees fan, so I even like their disco stuff. I actually don't consider SNF to be typical disco.
Each soundtrack contains one song in my all time top 250(More Then a Woman by Taveres, and Summer Nights by ONJ and Travolta)
Good observation by Sat on the Barry Gibb connection.
One interesting point: we have friends (two couples)who live in NYC. Of the four people two have in the past acted on broadway, and a third off broadway. All four of them thought that the movie Grease was terrible compared to the play, and particularly hated the Frankie Valli title tune which is not in the play, but was written for the movie. (I, on the other hand, always liked the song.)
To each his own I guess.

I just can't decide...maybe SNF, I guess. But without a doubt, my top 2 soundtracks of all time, as well as my top 2 fave albums of 1978! (Playin' lots of music from this year currently!) Look for at least one song from each soundtrack to be in my "70's tourney II".

Yeah, Saturday Night Fever is my favorite if I have to choose between the two. I really enjoy both soundtracks, but nothing gets me movin' like SNF!
