Thought I'd start this earlier today.
Two of my faves on here!
Gene Pitney-My third fave today. Gene made some good stuff in that post 50's, pre Beatles time period where music was at a low. Actually, my fave is his "psychedelic" 68 hit, She's a Heartbreaker. Just made the Hall last year. Gotta get me a collection! Faves-She's a Heartbreaker, It Hurts to Be in Love, Town Without Pity.
Robert Plant-My second fave. I went through a HUGE Plant thing back in 88-91 or so. Still love the stuff I have by him, but I don't find myself pulling out those CD's so much. Love it when I hear it, although I don't usually play it multiple times. First album I only liked 1 song, LOVED the second album, hated the next one, LOVED Now and Zen (played it to DEATH) and Manic Nirvana. The follow up was good, but not as good. Very unique style, unlike any other artist, very different from his Zep stuff. Faves-I Believe, Why, Walking Towards Paradise, One Love, Burning Down One Side, Heaven Knows, Thru With the Two Step, Other Arms, In the Mood, Ship of Fools. (Man, I really like a lot!)
Platters-Legendary vocal group. In the Hall. Deserve all the praise they get, but nothing I'd listen to. Too mellow, and not my kind of mellow. Faves-(If I had to pick some) (You've Got) The Magic Touch, The Great Pretender, Twilight Time.
Poco-My fave today. Ok, the Beatles are, always have been, and always will be my fave. But based on how much I have listened and been into a band in the past year, they would be, without a doubt, my fave. LOVE this group! It's a shame critics remember this band for their lightweight AM pop of the late 70s, because their early 70's stuff was VERY influential. Very important country-rock band. Too country for FM, too loud/hard for country. Richie Furay is so overlooked. If you like Buffalo Springfield, CSN, Byrds, Eagles and are not familiar with Poco beyond a few radio hits, PLEASE listen to them!! To be honest with you, I like them MORE than the Eagles. And if you like any current country, check them out! Can't say enough good about them. Crazy Eyes, Here We Go Again, Hurry Up, Believe Me, Get in the Wind, Crazy Love, Anyway Bye Bye, Honky Tonk Downstairs, A Good Feelin' to Know, I Can See Everything.
Pointer Sisters-Goes well with JP's poll of the day! They were on quite a roll in 84, after having some big hits in the late 70s/early 80s. Successful, and I sorta liked a few tunes then, but nothing I'd listen to now. Faves-Fire, Jump (For My Love), He's So Shy.
And you?

Gene Pitney-...Actually, my fave is his "psychedelic" 68 hit, She's a Heartbreaker. Same here! I've only heard it a few times, though (that's radio for you--so many good songs don't get played often enough ). Robert Plant-I just recently got "Fate of Nations"-good CD! The others are good too. I especially like Poco. I don't have any of their stuff on CD--yet.

Gene Pitney - I've always liked "Town Without Pity" (so over-dramatic and perfect for the time period) but that's about it. Robert Plant - Sorry. I don't like any of his solo stuff that I've heard. That one Honeydrippers song is okay but everything else.... Platters - Ditto your comments. I respect them but don't listen to them. Poco - Yay! I love their lightweight AM pop as much as I enjoy the harder country rock. Everyone should take a listen to their greatest hits album called Ultimate Collection. Faves: Crazy Love ( I could listen to this song on a continuous loop and be happy), Rose of Cimarron, Heart of the Night, Widowmaker, You Better Think Twice, Good Feelin' To Know Pointer Sisters - Try as I might to deny it, they had some catchy tunes. Faves: He's So Shy, Fire, Slow Hand (although I like Conway Twitty's version better), I'm So Excited

Gene Pitney- Didn't realize he's in the Hall. I'm surprized, actually. Never thought he got any recognition. Unusual voice that you either like or you don't. I like - a lot. I have a big stack of his 45s, but don't think I have any albums. He's on my list of compilations I want. Faves: Only Love Can Break A Heart (love the whistling) (all time top 100), Liberty Valance, If I Didn't Have A Dime, Every Breath I Take (fantastic song that everyone has forgotten) , 24 Miles form Tulsa, It Hurts To Be In Love, Last Chance To Turn Around, She Lets Her Hair Down Early In The Morning, Princess in Rags, I Wanna Love My Life Away, Half Heaven Half Heartache, I'm Gonna be Strong. I Must Be Seeing Things, Looking Through The Eyes of Love.
Robert Plant- Not familiar with his solo stuff.
Platters- My all time #3 favorite group (after the Eagles and the Bee Gees) featuring my #2 all time male vocalist (behind Roy), Tony Williams. The ORIGINAL group was fantastic, the later offshoots were barely worth listening to. Faves: Only You (and You Alone) (all time top 50), My Prayer (all time top 250), Twilight Time (all time top 100), Smoke Gets In Your Eyes (all time top 250), The Great Pretender, Harbor Lights, Dancing Partner, You'll Never Never Know (maybe the best bass singing I've ever heard by Herb Reed), To Each His Own, I'll Never Smile Again, Enchanted, My Dream, One In A Million, The Magic Touch, Winner Take All, Heaven On Earth, On My Word of Honor, I'm Sorry, and Remember When. If you are only familiar with songs like "With This Ring" recorded in the late '60s with Sonny Turner as lead singer after Tony left the Group, then you have never heard the real Platters. Poco- I'm only familiar with Crazy Love. It's a good song. Based on what you're saying Sat, they sound like a group looking into.
Pointer Sisters- A decent '70s and '80s R&B/soul group that I really didn't follow all that closely. Faves: Fire, I'm So Excited, Jump For My Love, Slow Hand, He's So Shy (on JP's post I mentioned the Love Boat episode with Isaac singing lead with the Pointers - he sang "I'm So Shy")

Playing catch-up, I had to go back and do yesterdays post..
Gene Pitney-The "Hiccup" singer! My last girlfriend liked him, but she was mostly into goth/industrial, so that's quite a stretch! I never got into him, though. I do like "She's A Heartbreaker", though.
Robert Plant-Here's MY fave today. I LOVED his first 3 solo albums (I know we've discussed this before), but Now & Zen hasn't aged well with me. The only song I still listen to is White Clean & Neat. I liked the album a lot at the time, maybe I just associate bad memories with it or something. Manic Nirvana was a dissapointment. I bought it the week it came out, since then I've seen it a thousand times in cut-out bins. Only song I really like from it is "Watching You". I never bothered with Fate Of Nations, I heard it once in a record store when I was shopping, it didn't do much for me, but by then I was really into "Alternative"
Platters-Not my style. I do like the mid-60's hits though ("With This Ring" etc...)
Poco-What little I've heard by them, I liked, should pick up a collection soon.
Pointer Sisters-A few forgetable hits, but one really good one: Dare Me. Other than that, I can take or leave them..

Gene Pitney - Great Voice , Great Tunes - I like quite a few songs.
Faves - It Hurts To Be In love ,Town Without Pity , I'm Gonna Be Strong , 24 Hours From Tulsa , Only Love Can Break A Heart and I Must Be Seeing Things.
Robert Plant - I used to hear his stuff quite a bit on the radio although not much anymore. I still remember seeing the video clip for Big Log alot when it was first release
I saw him on an episode of Austin City Limits a few months back and he had a great band .
Faves - In The Mood , Big Log , Tall Cool One and I Got My Eyes On You (The Hurting Kind)
Platters - Deserve their place in the hall . Like to listen to their tunes every so often.
Faves - Only You (and You alone) , Harbor Lights , Smoke Gets in Your Eyes , My Prayer and The Great Pretender
Poco - It seems that The Eagles stole Poco's thunder(I'm a fan of both bands) . All the guys were talented musicians in their own right especially Rusty . Richie and Tim could really SING!!
Faves - Call it Love , C'mon , A Good Feelin' To Know ,Grand Junction ,Honky Tonk Downstairs , Crazy Love , You Better Think Twice , First Love , Last Call (Cold Enchilada #3) From The Inside , I Can See Everything You Are The One, Hear That Music , Here We Go Again , Rocky Mountain Breakdown, Believe Me , I Guess You Made It , Crazy Eyes and Just For Me and You.
The Pointer Sisters - I don't mind a few of their songs , but have to admit I really don't listen to them all that much.
Faves - He's So Shy , I'm So Excited and Jump (For my Love) - I remember taping this off the radio at the time.

Gene Pitney: Unfortunately I know nothing but the name. Robert Plant: Loved his solo work though I almost NEVER hear it anymore. His sound was totally different from Zep. Some of the better album rock of the mid 80's. Favorites = Big Log, Little By Little, In the Mood, Burning Down One Side Platters: The Great Pretender...what a classic that is! Outstanding material but I tend to get them confused with the Drifters, the Tams and other acts that have the Myrtle Beach sound. I hope to goodness it was them that performed "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" or I'm about to embarass myself Favorites = The Great Pretender, Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, Only You Poco: Eh...mellow southern rock that came out at the height of the disco era. Not bad in retrospect but I HATED this band then. My Dad, on the other hand, absolutely loved Poco and played them incessantly in 1979. Favorites = Crazy Love, Heart of the Night Pointer Sisters: Had lots of hits 1975-1986 but IMO were very overrated. They are average at best. Got really tired of "Jump" in the summer of 84, it was on radio, MTV and even network promos for the Olympics nonstop. Some good material but the execution is generally lacking. Favorites = Yes We Can Can, Fire, He's So Shy, Automatic

Gene Pitney--my fave today. Anyone into good oldies music should check out his 2-CD set on Tomato label. It's a fascinating set. And saw him at the State Fair a few years back--he still "has it"! Faves: It hurts to be in love Town without pity Mecca She's a heartbreaker The man who shot Liberty Valance Last chance to turn around Only love can break a heart 24 hours from Tulsa I wanna love my life away Half heaven, half heartache Looking through the eyes of love I'm gonna be strong Every breath I take If I didn't have a dime True love never runs smooth Yesterday's hero Backstage She lets her hair down Princess in rags Many others...
Robert Plant--Pretty good in my book. I like "Principle of Moments" the best (own it, weird album cover!). Other solo albums were great for their time. Faves: Big log Tall cool one Little by little Hurting kind Heaven knows In the mood Burning down one side Other arms Pledge pin Your ma said you cried in your sleep last night Too loud Calling to you Dance on my own Tie dye on the highway 29 palms
Platters--Probably the Click's 3rd or 4th biggest fan of them here. Saw them in concert (one original member, can't rem. who), and they were fine! Played all the biggest, and have a desrved Hall slot. Super stuff. Faves: Twilight time (WOOO HOOOOOO!!!!!!!) The great pretender Smoke gets in your eyes Only you (The first R & B record to cross over to pop and hit top 5 pop as well) The magic touch With this ring My prayer Enchanted Harbor lights I'm sorry I love you 1000 times To each his own If I didn't care
Poco--Sorry Sat--to each their own. I like their hits, but never a "pogressive country-rock" fan. Rusty's steel guitar IS something else, however! And go figure, I like the Eagles' SECOND greatest hits more than their first! Shows you what era in music I like the most! ;D Faves: Heart of the night Crazy love Indian summer Call it love Keep on tryin' Shoot for the moon Under the gun Nothin' to hide You better think twice (their only early one I've heard of)
Pointer Sisters--A huge fave of mine from middle and high school. Don't listen to them a lot today, but I fully respect what they've stood for in bringing to the music world "the definitive 80's top 40/R & B sound"--like the female counterparts of Kool & the Gang. And their singing's so wonderful, but not as close singing as En Vogue. Neat "throwback" style on some early tunes. Faves: Goldmine I'm so excited (all versions) Jump (for my love) Automatic Slow hand I need you (one of the 80's best non-top 40 hits) He's so shy Should I do it Yes we can can American music Neutron dance Fire Dare me Sexual power Twist my arm What a surprise (This, not "Should I do it" was the follow-up to "Slow Hand", it very unjustly failed to chart, and even failed to make their Planet Greatest Hits (1978-1982.) Baby come and get it How long (Chick on the side) All I know is the way I feel Fairytale Happiness Sleeping alone He turned me out Wang dang doodle Could I be dreaming Steam heat Going down slowly That's a plenty Freedom Black coffee Someday we'll be together Having a party Mercury rising Take my heart, take my soul Hot together You gotta believe If you wanna get back your lady Salt peanuts Who do you love Special things Friend's advice (Don't take it) Sugar Easy days Blind faith Love too good to last Jada Cloudburst Shaky flat blues

Gene Pitney - Some of his songs are staples on the oldies stations here, but I never grow tired of hearing them. As H2 pointed out, he has a unique voice. Great songs! Favorites: Only Love Can Break a Heart, It Hurts to Be in Love, A Town Without Pity, Liberty Valance.
Robert Plant - I'm not too familiar with a lot of his solo work, but most of what I've heard, I like. I should probably investigate his music more closely someday. Favorites: Big Log, In the Mood.
Platters - Wonderful vocal group - so many of their songs are classics. Favorites: Only You, With This Ring, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, The Great Pretender, Twilight Time, My Prayer.
Poco - I've always loved the hits that got radio play, but wasn't familiar with any of their other songs until this past year. Even then, most of what I know are their later hits - I really need to check out their earlier material. Favorites: Heart of the Night, Crazy Love, Shoot for the Moon, Indian Summer, Rose of Cimarron, You Better Think Twice.
Pointer Sisters - Their songs bring back SO many memories for me! Good vocals and catchy melodies!Favorites: American Music, I'm So Excited, Slow Hand, Automatic, He's So Shy, Fire, Dare Me, Neutron Dance, Jump (For My Love).

That is if you like the early country Eagles, not the Walsh, bombastic, guitar era Eagles (not that there is anything wrong with that!). And I have read that at first, the Eagles were POCO wannabes!!

Again, I gotta recommend that 2 disc Forgotten Trail album by Poco!
