Two Hall of Famers, one of which is HUGE!!
Poison-Ok, I was never a big fan of these guys. I really can't even pick a fave song. And the hair band era is laughable now. But you gotta admit, for the time, these guys were huge, eclipsing Motley Crue for a time. Lots hits, but to me, they were more for the chicks. (My wife and her friends liked them at the time). Faves-(If I have to) Talk Dirty to Me, Nothin' But a Good Time, Unskinny Bop.
Police-Another group I don't always think about. Also another group that is hit or miss with me, where either I really like the song, or I hate it. You can retire Roxanne as far as I am concerned. Stick Every Breath You Take in there too. Sort of like Cream in that they made some big albums, and broke up before declining into medocracy. (Yeah, I know, also the power trio thing.) Faves-When the World is Running Down, You Make the Best of What's Still Around (LOVE it), Every Little Thing She Does is Magic, Invisible Sun.
Power Station-I actually liked (and bought) Get it On, but then again, I don't think I knew the original at the time. They rocked pretty hard, considering they were all popsters before this. Tony Tompson POUNDED those drums, didn't he? Faves-Get it On, Some Like it Hot.
Elvis Presley-Ok, here we go. The undisputed KING of rock-n-roll. I understand the arguments for Chuck Berry, inventing THE rock guitar riff, and for Little Richard having the wild rock and roll attitude to him, but sorry, no one had the voice, style and staying power that Elvis did. Plus he was a white guy who could do justice to black songs unlike others (PAT BOONE). Forget the bad 60's movies, the fried peanut butter and banana sandwhiches, the white jumpsuits, the karate kicks, the drugs and the big gut. It seems to be people's argument against him. Yet there is a picture of Mick Jagger in bed with David Bowie and no one seems to have a problem with them. Let's remember the guy could SING and had such a presence about him. He was cool as sh!t. Of course the original 50s stuff is great, but there is also great stuff in the 60s (especially later in the decade) and even the 70s. Ok, Do the Vega won't make the world forget all the British Invasion stuff that was out at the time, but you get the point. He is, was, and always will be the KING. Faves-If Every Day Was Like Christmas, You Gave Me a Mountain (Live), Marie's the Name (His Latest Flame), Viva Las Vegas, American Trilogy (Live), I'm Leavin', Kentucky Rain, The Wonder of You (Live), C'mon Everybody, Mean Woman Blues (Prefer the movie version), Lonesome Cowboy, Party, I Wanna Be Free, If I Can Dream, Santa Claus is Back in Town. (That is just a sampling, I am sure there are others I like more.)
Billy Preston-The 5th Beatle? Well, the only person to share billing on a Beatles single (ok, other than Tony Sheridan!). Honestly, I only know his two number ones, and those are just average funk to me. No one I'd buy a compilation of. Faves-Will it Go Round in Circles, Nothing From Nothing.
And you?

Poison-From the era after I stopped caring. I know I've heard a bunch of their songs, but the only one I'm really familiar with is Every Rose Has Its Thorn. Lukewarm on it. Police- I don't go crazy over them, but I do like a few of their songs, including the ones you got tired of, Sat. (just said that so I could use the icon. ) Faves: Roxane, Every Breath You Take, Don't Stand So Close To Me, Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic Power Station- Only song I know is Get It On. It's pretty good, but I like the T Rex version better. Elvis Presley- I think one thing we can say about Elvis is: if there were no Elvis, we wouldn't be posting on MC. He was the catalyst for all of it. Not Chuck or Bill Haley or Little Richard. Not even the Beatles. If there were no Elvis, there'd be no Beatles. - Not as we know them anyway. That said, I have to do a brief spiel on the two Elvises. I hear what you said about not judging him on the fried nanner sandwiches and white jumpsuits. But it was more than that. In a lot of his music in his later years, I just didn't feel that he was trying. Yeah, he did the big production numbers with the big sound and all the sweat, but, IMO, the MUSIC wasn't there; it was all production. There was no edge. Early Elvis was a different guy. THIS is the man who brought Rock N Roll to the masses. THIS is the reason we're on MC today. Faves: (with the exception of a couple, they're all Skinny Elvis.) Don't (all time top 100), When My Blue Moon Turns To Gold Again (all time top 200) Anyway You Want Me (all time top 200), I Want You I Need You I Love You (all time top 250) Now and Then There's a Fool Such As I, Playing For Keeps Too Much, All Shook Up, Hound Dog, Heartbreak Hotel, Don't Be Cruel, Love Me Tender Teddy Bear, I Don't Care If the Sun Don't Shine Trying To Get To You Love Me One Night With You Loving You Marie's The Name Follow That Dream Little Sister Surrender Are You Lonesome Tonite Good Luck Charm It's Now Or Never I Feel So Bad Can't Help Falling In Love Rock-a-Hula Baby She's Not You In The Ghetto Suspicious Minds Kentucky Rain Billy Preston- Beatle connection or not, a fine keyboardist. Always thought he'd have more success than he did. Faves: Will It Go Round In Circles, Outa Space, Nothing From Nothing, I Wrote A Simple Song

Today you have one of my favorite 80's bands, and one of my least favorite 80's bands......
Poison-I totally gave up on metal when these guys came out. Of course, they were never really metal to begin with, but I just didn't get into them. For a shy, awkward, acne-faced 16 year-old kid who couldn't get a date, this music did NOT speak to me.
Police-.....and one of my favorites! I own all 5 of their albums, and I love them all! I actually bought a bass guitar after I heard the Zenyatta Mondatta album. Synchronicity was one of those albums in junior high that everybody had to have. Sting today is NOTHING like the Sting that made these records!
Power Station-Made one GREAT album back in '85! One of the best of the year. Their '97 follow-up album "Living In Fear" was not very good, but I did get to see them in concert that year. Tony DID pound the drums, he broke several stucks and even a snare drum head that night! Faves: Go To Zero, Lonely Tonight, Some Like It Hot, Murderess, Harvest For The World.......... the whole '85 album, more or less!
Elvis-I was never a fan of him until recently. While I always respected his accomplishments, I never really liked 50's rock. Then I heard a CD of his material from '68-'77. Man, those are some GOOD songs!! Faves: Kentucky Rain, If You Talk In Your Sleep, I'm Leavin', Moody Blue, Clean Up Your Own Back Yard......
Billy Preston-Good keyboard player. Had a few big hits, some instrumental, some vocal. Fave: Outa Space

I learned them both at once, and for whatever reason, I listed the wrong one, even though I've listened to I'm Leavin' a billion times more! I'm so pissed I'm gonna go modify it! LOL!

Poison - They were harmless I guess. Even though I dug a lot of the cheesy metal that was out at that time I never really liked these guys that much. CC Deville makes me laugh. Anyway, I guess my fave from them would be Nothin' But A Good Time. Police - I absolutely adore them. Even when they made questionable music choices, I appreciated the effort. I have all of their albums. My mom introduced me to this band. She saw them play at some random club in 1978 and was hooked. Their music was played a lot in my house in the early 80s. I had the biggest crush on Stewart Copeland when I was 12. He's still one of my favorite drummers! Faves: Walking On The Moon Bring On The Night Message In A Bottle On Any Other Day So Lonely Can't Stand Losing You Roxanne When The World Is Running Down, You Make The Best Of What's Still Around De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da Don't Stand So Close To Me Listen Listen Driven To Tears Murder By Numbers Wrapped Around Your Finger Spirits In The Material World Power Station - Love them too! Any group that has Robert Palmer and my boyfriend John Taylor in it is going to be SUPER in my book. Faves: Some Like It Hot, Lonely Tonight, Communication, Go To Zero Elvis - I have to say that I think he's been put up on a higher musical pedestal than he should, BUT I do think he was talented. Hey, and I actually like all the cheese that he's criticized for. Give me the cardboard plot movies, and the jumpsuits and the strange food habits. Anyway my faves from him are: That's All Right Viva Las Vegas Suspicious Minds Heartbreak Hotel Never Been To Spain (live 1972 - although 3 Dog's version is better) Can't Help Falling In Love A Little Less Conversation (the original) Return To Sender It's Now or Never Are You Lonsesome Tonight Billy Preston - I like his two hits, plus his duet with Syretta which is one of the prettiest love songs ever recorded. I also like his Beatles covers. Faves: With You I'm Born Again, Nothing from Nothing, Will It Go Round In Circles, Get Back, I Wrote A Simple Song, Blackbird

Yeahhhh! Great list today...this will be a hoot! ;D Poison: Hoo boy, why on earth did I like them so much back in the 80's? Even saw them in concert with Warrant. "Look What the Cat Dragged In" was a fun album during my freshman year of college and many a party was attended with this playing in the cassette deck. I don't get the whole eye shadow and lipstick thing but whatever floats your boat I guess. Talent? Nah...not really. It was more about the attitude...the partying...the girls... When I was 19 those were my priorities so that's how I was once a fan. Favorites = Talk Dirty to Me, I Won't Forget You, Every Rose Has Its Thorn, Nothing But a Good Time The Police: Excellent band. One of my favorites from my high school years. Sting, Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers produced some of the better music 1979-1983. Deep lyrics, great drumming, fine guitar work and Sting's passionate vocal style make this band a real winner. Favorites = Roxanne, Don't Stand So Close To Me, De Do Do Do De Da Da Da, Every Breath You Take, King of Pain, Wrapped Around Your Finger, Synchronisity II Power Station: Let's see, there was Robert Palmer, Nile Rodgers, John Taylor and Andy Taylor? One of a handful of supergroups formed during the first half of the eighties (Asia, Arcadia, The Firm) though this one was strictly a one album deal. Saw them in concert also. It was a good show from what I remember of it . I had nosebleed seats in a closed arena and all the smoke from negligibly illegal substances rose to my level, leaving me slightly less than lucid. But anyway...fun band. Bang a Gong was nice but Marc Bolan and T.Rex did it right the first time. Favorites = Some Like it Hot, Bang a Gong (Get It On) Elvis Presley: Won't bother to critique him because we all know of his legend. Like many, I have an MAJOR preference for early slim Elvis than late bloated Elvis. Col. Tom Parker and his Svengali-like influence over the King stifled Elvis' creativity...leading to less-than-exciting recordings, concerts and movies as time passed. Great voice. Could have exceeded The Beatle's chart success had he not been managed by a jackass. Favorites = Hound Dog, Jailhouse Rock, Teddy Bear, Love Me Tender, That's Alright Mama, Don't Be Cruel, Crying in the Chapel, Burning Love, Blue Christmas, It's Now or Never, Wear My Ring Around Your Neck, Blue Hawaii, Amazing Grace, The Battle Hymn of the Republic, I Can't Help Falling in Love, many more Billy Preston: The Beatle's session keyboardist of the late 60's and one of the first signed to their Apple label. Can really pound the ivories! The thing I remember most, besides his songs, is his humongous Afro. It must have been a foot high in every direction! Thumbs up. Favorites = Will It Go 'Round in Circles, Nothing From Nothing

Poison - I never really got into them much, but their music isn't bad - I think I like it more now than I did then! Favorite: Every Rose Has Its Thorn.
Police - Oh yes! Somehow I missed hearing 'Roxanne' when it was current, but I was really taken with ' De Doo Doo Doo, De Da Da Da' when it first came out, and I've been a fan of theirs ever since. Great junior high and high school memories! Favorites: Spirits in the Material World, Synchronicity II, King of Pain, Don't Stand So Close to Me, Message in a Bottle, Invisible Sun, Wrapped Around Your Finger, Every Little Thing She Does is Magic, Driven to Tears, De Doo Doo Doo.
Power Station - I'm only familiar with 'Get It On' and 'Some Like It Hot' - both are great!
Elvis Presley - Unquestionably, one of the most influential artists in music history. My dad has always been a big fan of his, and I can remember him playing the Aloha from Hawaii LP many times when I was growing up. Like Pete, I tend to lean more toward his later material, although his earlier songs were wonderful also. Favorites: Burning Love, Memories, Suspicious Minds, Kentucky Rain, In the Ghetto, Way Down, Can't Help Falling in Love, Don't Cry Daddy, Heartbreak Hotel, Don't Be Cruel, Good Luck Charm, Are You Lonesome Tonight?, and many more.
Billy Preston - His work with the Beatles was outstanding, and I also love his solo work. He is a tremendously talented keyboardist. 'Space Race' is a superb track, in my personal top 50 songs of all time. Other favorites: Outa-Space, Struttin', Will It Go Round in Circles, Nothing from Nothing, With You I'm Born Again.

On target today! The 5 I predicted for today--here they are! Poison--Great gigh school and college memories for me. A little overhyped, and their ballads were quite "fluffy". Knew "Thorn" would hit #1 the moment I first heard the album in July '88--almost 3 months before the single release. Seemed like later 80's charts were so easy to predict. Anyway, some great rockers! Faves: Nothin' but a good time Unskinny bop Talk diirty to me Your mama don't dance (blows Loggins and Messina's version away! sorry... ;D ) Fallen angel Ride like the wind Love on the rocks (didn't make the Hits CD ) I want action Police--seemed like everyone in my middle school classes liked them a LOT. Couldn't understand it fully, but their tunes were all right. Their lesser remembered hits I actually like the most today. And Sting Solo? Doesn't compare. Faves: De do do do de da da da Roxanne Spirits in the material world Don't stand so close to me Synchronicity II When the world is running down... Invisible sun Message in a bottle Synchronicity I Can't stand losing you King of pain Every little thing she does is magic Walking on the moon Canary in a coalmine Bed's too big without you Friends (a B-side--Love its unusuality) Tea in the Sahara So lonely Bring on the night Wrapped around your finger Hole in my life Behind my camel O my God Walking in your footsteps I'm sure many people noticed I deliberately forgot one. In fact, I'll say it's in my top 100 of my CRAZY list--simply because it was HUGE. And it's STILL played to the ground 20 years later! I can gladly do without it, and life would have been better if I never heard it--better yet, never recorded. Power Station--with the "KLF", my fave one album act ever. What a combo--the album's easily in my top 500! Forget their 1997 album ever existed. This was pure DYNAMITE. Faves-- Get it on (Bang a gong) (Will always like it better than T. Rex! ;D) Some like it hot Communication Harvest for the world (In a perfect world, this, not Communication, should've been the 3rd single) Go to zero Murderess Lonely tonight Still in your heart Elvis Presley--my fave today--obviously. But it was his earliest hits, and I do mean HITS I still enjoy the most after all these years. I could never warm up to his later stuff and many of his movie tunes. And I'm TIRED of 50-something women who INSIST his later hits were his best--thank the LORD "the younger Elvis" outvoted "Fat Elvis" on the postage stamp a decade ago. And oldies stations that think "Suspicious Minds" is his all time best, like that was his biggest hit, have another thing coming! And not surprisingly, it's my mom's least fave Elvis #1! As a teen scream, those girls knew best. Those RCA hits from the start till his Army induction were so top-notch. And indeed, a true legend that won't soon be forgotten. Forget those "alive" rumors--enough is ENOUGH! RIP Elvis Aron Presly 1935-1977. Faves: A little less conversation (JXL mix ;D) Hound dog Don't be cruel All shook up Teddy bear I got stung Little sister It's now or never Viva Las Vegas (one of Billboard chart's biggest mysteries--how the B-SIDE "What'd I say" got higher on the chart is way beyond me) Follow that dream Return to sender Jailhouse rock Heartbreak hotel Stuck on you Hard headed woman Good luck charm Bossa nova baby I want you I need you I love you Burning love Are you lonesome tonight She's not you A big hunk o' love I need your love tonight Devil in disguise Don't A fool such as I Wear my ring around your neck I feel so bad Too much Guitar man Kissin' cousins Love me tender One broken heart for sale I beg of you Can't help falling in love In the ghetto Rock-a-hula baby Way down Did a HORRIBLE job covering "You don't have to say you love me" Only Dusty's song, thank YOU! Billy Preston--VERY understated keyboardist--of course, coming from the Click's most avid keyboard fan! SUPER job on Moogs and Clavinets on many early 70's tunes. And a pretty good singer too. Faves: Will it go round in circles Space race Nothing from nothing Outa-space With you I'm born again That's how God planned it I wrote a simple song Struttin' Slaughter You're so unique You are so beautiful (just as good as Joe C*cker's remake) Get back (from the unfairly misjudged "Sgt. Pepper's soundtrack") Wow! Catch my breath for the weekend!

I can gladly do without it, and life would have been better if I never heard it--better yet, never recorded. Actually, no, I hadn't noticed until you said that. It must be "Every Breath You Take", and yes, that HAS been overplayed. I really liked it at first, but I remember it came out before I had cable, and every time I got a chance to watch MTV at someone's house, or to watch any music video program, that was ALWAYS on! I didn't even have MTV and I got sick of that darn video! It's too bad, because it is a good video... (quoting again) Harvest for the world (In a perfect world, this, not Communication, should've been the 3rd single) Absolutely yes! That's a great song! ("Harvest for the World", that is--I don't even remember "Communication")

Poison--Probably my favorite "hair metal" band. I liked them a lot. Brett Michaels was awful cute, and I thought he had a lot of charisma. And he looked pretty good in that spandex. I enjoyed the band's energy, and their songs. Police--I've never been a fan of Sting's voice. There are a couple of this group's songs that I can tolerate, but I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to them. Power Station--Not bad. I was never into them much, but I do remember a controversy about the video for Some Like it Hot. The woman that was featured in the video dancing and prancing around, was really a man. Don't ask me why I remember that. LOL! Elvis Presley--A legend. A classic. Influenced and paved the way for a lot of artists. Such great contributions to the music world. I saw him in concert when I was 10 years old, and even though I was so young, I knew I was seeing a legendary performer. A truly great artist that the world lost too soon. Billy Preston--A guy I tend to forget about these days, but I really liked him back in the day. I think I have all his 45's. I used to play them all the time when I was a kid. I can remember playing either Space Race or Outta Space one time REALLY loud, and my dad screaming at me to turn that crap down or he'd come up to my room and break the damn record. LOL!

[glow=red,2,300]Poison- I've never much cared for their music myself. They are going to have a concert here in town this weekend, though.
Police- Their song Every Breath You Take was the top song in the U.K. on the day I was born. I like that song and Roxanne, but I don't really care for anything else.
Power Station- Haven't heard any of their music. I did have to play Get it On for band a few times though and it is one of my favorite numbers.
Elvis Presley- I like Kentucky Rain, Suspicious Minds, and In the Ghetto the best out of all of his. Jailhouse Rock is good too. I'm not really a big fan of his though. [/glow]

Poison - Only song I really know is Talk Dirty to Me.
Police - I remember when Roxanne came out, I thought these guys were pretty good. As they continued to crank out the hits, they just got better. Kind of hard to thing of them as classic rockers, but they are. In my top 60 all time. Favorites: Message in a Bottle, Can't Stand Losing You, Every Breath You Take, Synchronicity II.
Power Station - Did songs in 1985 (not a good year for me, the radio, & top 40). I'll have to check them out.
Elvis - The king. Nuff said. Favorites: Heartbreak Hotel, Don't Be Cruel, Love Me Tender, Jailhouse Rock, It's Now or Never, Can't Help Falling in Love, In The Ghetto, Suspicious Minds, Kentucy Rain, Burning Love, Promised Land.
Billy Preston - Pretty good funk. Guess you have to be good to play for the Beatles. Good stuff though. Favorites: Outa-Space, Will it go Round in Circles, Nothing from Nothing.
