Ok, I'm back. Wasn't really sick yesterday, just sorta feeling BLAH. Feeling a little better today. Just wasn't in the best mood the past few days.
Anyway....
Pretenders-Good band. Sort of part of the new wave of rock that came out in the late 70s, with groups like the Cars and Talking Heads, when rock became very basic again. I tend to just prefer the songs from the original lineup. Back on the Chain Gang was ok, but too mellow for me. Wish Farndon and Honeyman-Scott weren't more interested in drugs than in music. Faves-Message of Love (great lead in), Day After Day, Talk of the Town, Brass in Pocket, Tattooed Love Boys.
Prince-Prince is someone I always liked when he was at his peak, but it was very UNCOOL for me to like him. All my friends liked hard rock, so Prince was not cool. Plus he was too fruity for their taste. But I couldn't deny I liked his stuff. One single after another was good. My dad had the 1999 single, and I bought the two follow up singles. I think most people tend to overlook Delirious. Purple Rain was great as well. Pretty much everything up to and including the duet with Sheena. Don't even talk to me about the "symbol" years. Faves-Delirious, Little Red Corvette, Pop Life, Moutains, When Doves Cry.
Procol Harum-I only know the two biggies that still get radio play. I'd like to invest in one of those A&M collections and hear what other stuff is like, such as A Salty Dog. Faves-A Whiter Shade of Pale, Conquistador.
Psychedelic Furs-One of the 80s-MTV-punk bands I don't mind. I know their 4 Hot 100 hits, all good. MTV used to play the crap out of Love My Way. The lead singer always reminded me of Mick Jagger, in terms of looks and movements. Faves-The Ghost in You (Counting Crows cover sucked), Love My Way, Heartbreak Beat, Pretty in Pink.
Gary Puckett & Union Gap-Lightweight pop that came out in the wake of the British Invasion. Wouldn't mind having a Greatest Hits, but all the best stuff gets regular play on the oldies station anyway. Faves-Woman, Woman, Young Girl, Over You, Lady Willpower.
And you?

Pretenders- never clicked with 'em as a group, tho they had several songs I like a lot. Faves- "Thin Line Between Love & Hate", and "My City Was Gone", and "Middle of the Road".
Prince- had a few songs I like a lot,but... (sorta like the Pretenders above). My faves "When Doves Cry", "Let's Go Crazy", and "Delirious". Don't like "Purple Rain".
Procol Harum- I think about the first rock group to record an album with a symphony orchestra. I suggest listening to the LP "Grand Hotel" for some nice and unplayed songs. "Whiter Shade of Pale"- one of the absolute classics of 60s music.Never get tired of hearing it!
Psychedelic Furs- only know the two songs "Prety in Pink" and "Love My Way" but I like them.
Gary Puckett & Union Gap- only like their first song "Woman Woman". Puckett had a great solo voice. They started off a kind of novelty act-in their first photos, they're all dressed in Union Civil War uniforms. (Like early Paul Revere & the Raiders)

Glad to see you're back, Adam. Pretenders--A favorite band of mine. Love Chrissie's voice and attitude, and the rest of the group is great as well. Lots of tragedy in the band, though. Faves: My City Was Gone, Back on the Chain Gang, Brass in Pocket, I'll Stand By You, 2000 Miles, Talk of the Town, Time the Avenger, Night in My Veins, I'm Not in Love, Stop Your Sobbing, Kid, Show Me, Hymn to Her, Don't Get Me Wrong, many more... Prince--Great party music. Lots of memories of dancing around to Let's Go Crazy, Delirious, When Doves Cry, and many more. I was a big fan. Then, when he changed his name to a symbol, he just lost me. I stopped caring about his music. Anyway...Other faves: Raspberry Beret, Pop Life, U Got the Look, I Wanna Be Your Lover (first song I ever heard by him--I thought it was a girl singing. LOL), 1999, Little Red Corvette, I Would Die 4 U, Purple Rain, a few more... Procol Harum--I can't stand the two songs I know by them. They're just so long and drawn out. I get bored listening to them. I don't think I want to know anything else by them. Psychedelic Furs--I only know the name. I know nothing by them. Never saw Pretty in Pink, so the title song escapes me. Gary Puckett/Union Gap--Never was a big fan. All their songs sounded the same to me. Interchangable.

Pretenders-Love the first album the most. Subsequent singles like "Chain Gang" and "Middle Of The Road" were OK, but I HATED "Don't Get Me Wrong"! VH1 did a Legends special on them. I only saw it once, but Chrissie said that James Honeyman-Scott was a huge fan of The Beach Boys! They even showed a picture of him on stage with Dennis and Carl! Best line EVER sung by a female rocker: "I shot my mouth off and you showed me what that hole was FOR!"
Prince-I like a lot of his hits, but I never really saw what the big deal was. I like the Purple Rain album the most.
Procol Harem-EEEH, so-so.. I only know the two hits, so I can't say much.
Psychedelic Furs- AAAH, The Furs! Love them, I have most of their albums on CD, the first three were the best. I totally agree about the Counting Crows cover. AWFUL! I also like Richard Butler's later band, Love Spit Love. Faves-Heartbeat, India, All That Money Wants, Heartbreak Beat, Love My Way, President Gas, Pretty In Pink.
Gary Pucket & The Union Gap-My mom loved them and had a few of their albums back in the 60's. I have a greatest hits CD, but I can't help thinking he looks like Doc from "The Love Boat". Faves-Over You, Lady Wilpower, all the hits, basically..

With all the new icons, I can use them to rate the artists. Hehe, I'm having TOO much fun! Pretenders : Good band from the heartland. Chrissie Hynde has a rather unique voice and you could always know right away that it was a Pretenders song you were listening to. Honestly, I wouldn't be upset to see them get into the Hall, but that would be a longshot. It might take a few years. Favorites = Brass in Pocket, Middle of the Road, Back on the Chain Gang, Back to Ohio Prince : Easily my favorite today! His ego is gigantic and his creative output fell off dramatically after 1987's "Sign O' the Times" LP. On the plus side, can play virtually any instrument, is a very clever songwriter (despite his affinity for using "U" for you and "4" instead of for) and revolutionized funk for the 80's generation giving it more keyboard and drums. Extremely prolific songwriter during the 80's which led to his name change in protest of his record company, which refused to release more than one album per calendar year. The whole symbol thing hurt his career, as did his embarassing forays into acting (Under the Cherry Moon? Yikes!). Despite that, produced some of the best r&b albums of the 80's. "Dirty Mind" is excellent, "1999" is arguably his best and unquestionably a masterpiece, "Purple Rain" was overexposed but is also excellent. "Paisley Park"....eh, not up to par nor was 1986's release. "Sign O' the Times" was yet another near masterpiece. After that it was hit or miss...a shoo-in for H.O.F. in 2004. Superior to Michael Jackson in my opinion. Favorites include (long): I Wanna Be Your Lover Controversy Sex U Up Do Me Baby Nothing Compares 2 U Little Red Corvette D.M.S.R. Let's Pretend We're Married Delerious When Doves Cry I Would Die 4 U Darling Nikki Baby I'm a Star Take Me With U The Beautiful Ones Pop Life Kiss Housequake U Got the Look Hot Thing Partyman Cream Gett Off My Name Is Prince Procol Harem : I only know "Whiter Shade of Pale". It is an excellent song and is often one of the top rated oldies in the annual survey here. Favorites = A Whiter Shade of Pale Psychedelic Furs : Not one of my favorites of the 80's by any stretch of the imagination. I'm mostly neutral to these guys. They were more popular with the goth wannabes in my high school. Favorites = Pretty in Pink, Love My Way Gary Puckett & the Union Gap : Torturous and overly dramatic wailing. Every song sounds the same and they all make my dogs howl. I recall they wore those silly uniforms to make them look like Union soldiers from the Civil War. That didn't fly to well with the rednecks around here in Georgia (jeez, I'm perpetuating the stereotype). Anyways, I don't care too much for them. "Young Girl" makes me want to smash my stereo and have my eardrums surgically removed. No favorites...lol

Pretenders - They were pretty good. I wasn't around during their heyday, so the song I'm most familiar with is I'll Stand By You. That's a great, classic love song. Beautiful.
Prince - Poor guy. So ugly. But what lungs! Great songwriter, also. I call him TAFKAP - The Artist Formerly Known As Prince. TAFKAP's what Rosie O called him too. Faves - Little Red Corvette, When Doves Cry, 1999, Raspberry Beret, Let's Go Crazy
Not very familiar with the rest.

It's good to see you back! Pretenders - Great group with a very distinctive sound. I've enjoyed their music for many years. Favorites: Mystery Achievement, Brass in Pocket, Show Me, Middle of the Road, Back on the Chain Gang, Time the Avenger. Prince - Boy, does his music ever bring back memories of high school! I remember the Purple Rain soundtrack was huge back then. Very talented musician and songwriter. Favorites: 1999, Little Red Corvette, Raspberry Beret, Let's Go Crazy, I Wanna Be Your Lover, Pop Life. Procol Harum - I'm only familiar with the two hits plus 'Whiskey Train', a great album cut. 'Conquistador' is my favorite of theirs - love it! Psychedelic Furs - I haven't heard very much of their music, but most of what I've heard, I like. Favorites: The Ghost in You, Pretty in Pink. Gary Puckett & the Union Gap - I'd like to get his greatest hits CD myself. Nice 60's pop that's enjoyable to listen to, although it's true that many of his songs are very similar in style. Favorites: Over You, Lady Willpower, Young Girl, Woman, Woman, This Girl is a Woman Now.

Good list. Pretenders--great rock band; somehow I feel they'll get into the Hall before Prince. Like most of their hita and several album cuts. Chrissie, Joan Jett, Elvira, and others--they confused me throughout the 80's in looks. Absolutely LOVE their first album. And PLEASE, PLEASE make "I'll stand by you" STOP!!! Faves: Back on the chain gang Brass in pocket Middle of the road (ROCKS!) Don't get me wrong Precious (Man, does this COOK! My first college wouldn't even let me play this! ) Talk of the town My baby Night in my veins Never do that (very overlooked) Kid Time, the avenger Message of love Day after day The wait (Oddly, thought this was the Band tune at first, LOL) Show me 2000 miles Hymn to her Thin line between love and hate Private life Stop your sobbing Phone call Prince--one of my fave 80's performers. A modern day Mozart. Still have yet to get anything on CD by him, but it'll be soon. Some of his tunes still get overplayed, but he's simply wonderful; up there with MJ among my fave pop/R & B performers of all time. I guess still my fave today here. Faves: (longer list than Boogie's! ;D) Cream (absolutely love it) Delirious Pop life (LOVED this from minute 1) Let's go crazy The most beautiful girl in the world (one of the 90's best chilling love songs) Alphabet St. I would die 4 U Purple rain 7 (I kid you not, a woman DJ--prerecorded in Aladdin's Castle arcade as I played Klax in early '93--called this song "7 inch"--I still LMAO everytime I think about it) Diamonds and pearls Kiss I wanna be your lover Money don't matter 2night Batdance (no wonder this #1 tune is obscure--it's not on his '93 greatest hits releases) Gett off Mountains Sign o' the times (probably the biggest hit with the word "Crack" (the drug) in its lyrics--BADLY wished this song had a video) Pink cashmere (VERY overlooked ballad) Take me with U U got the look (MA book!) America 1999 (long version only! Party!) Baby I'm a star When doves cry (This, 1999, and Little red Corvette STILL are overplayed! I never went wild for this upon release, and it's NEVER been in my top 3 fave tunes from "Purple Rain". Still, a high position on my CRAZY list, "old-style".) Thieves in the temple Partyman Raspberry beret (wouldn't mind if I never heard it again) Letitgo I could never take the place of your man Darling Nikki Erotic city The morning papers Adore Little red Corvette (still overplayed; euphemism for a male rubbery object) I wish U heaven Scandalous! Around the world in a day My name is Prince Computer blue I hate U Anotherloverholeinyohead The arms of Orion Girls & boys The ladder Insatiable Hot thing New power generation Uptown Let's pretend we're married Soft and wet (Man, what a weird title for a debut single) Controversy All the critics love U in New York Head If I was your girlfriend Sexy Mf Dirty mind Procol Harum--based on how much I LOVE their 2 big hits, I should investigate further. The type of progressive rock I would crave, based on looking at their album output--all available on CD too! A whiter shade of plae's FOREVER in my top 1000, with Conquistador hovering in the top 5000. Psychedelic furs--never followed them much, but I like their hits--amazingly, I've hardly ever heard "The Ghost in you"! Faves: Love my way Heartbreak beat Pretty in pink (both 1981 and 1986 versions) All that money wants Gary Puckett--proud to own his original 1970 Greatest hits album. Such emotional music. Just my style of soft rock oldies. Faves: Young girl (another forever in my top 1000) Woman woman This girl is a woman now Over you Lady willpower Don't give into him Let's give Adam and Eve another chance Don't make promises Reverend Posey The beggar Home Keep the customer staisfied I just don't know what to do with myself My guesses for tomorrow: A Cincinnati country rock outfit who had some early 80's "mellow" hits. A sort-of forgotten 80's pop rock band led by a husband and wife, the latter who plays the sax. An American punk girl who had bigger success in Europe. A 2001 Rock Hall addition. Several rock classics. At least one of two hard rock groups; one still putting out albums after 20 years, the other's a hair band who died off fast. "Q" you up enough? Feel free to have anyone's additions or anyone who you like that I forgot.

Glad you're feeling better. I've had those blah days. Had one today...
The Pretenders: Really like them. Chrissie Hynde rocks. Favorites: Brass In Pocket, Message Of Love, Stop Your Sobbing, Talk Of The Town, Back On The Chain Bang, Middle Of The Road, Don't Get Me Wrong
Prince: liked him up until the whole symbol ordeal. Purple Rain proved to be prophetic with the line "Man nobody digs your music anymore but you". Favorites: Wanna Be Ur Lover, Why U Wanna Treat Me So Bad, Pop Life, Delerious, Raspberry Beret, Nothing Compares To U, Kiss, U Got The Look, 1999, Little Red Corvette, Baby I'm A Star, When Doves Cry, Take Me With U - BRING BACK THE REVOLUTION
Procul Harum: Only familiar with Whiter Shade Of Pale - great song - VH1 Classic plays a very confusing video featuring an actor that I can't remember the name of right now, but he was the detective in Steven King's Christine
Psychedelic Furs: I enjoy them. Favorites: Love My Way, Heartbreak Beat, Pretty In Pink
Gary Puckett: Mom swoons for him - way embarassed me at a concert - screamed like a little girl. I'm not a real big fan - all his stuff sounds the same

Pretenders--Thin line between love and hate Luv that one! Annie Lennox's version is great too! (quote) Procol Harum--A whiter shade of plae's FOREVER in my top 1000, with Conquistador hovering in the top 5000. I like both of those, but "A Whiter Shade of Pale" was kinda' ruined for me by the movie "New York Stories". If you've seen the movie, you know what I mean: In the first part of the trilogy (the movie has 3 parts), they play that song in the background about every 5 minutes! I REALLY got tired of hearing it! Gary Puckett-- Let's give Adam and Eve another chance Reverend Posey I don't recognize either of those titles--but put 'em together and it sounds like the part of a church bulletin where they list the sermon: "'Let's Give Adam and Eve Another Chance'-Rev. Posey." ;D Keep the customer staisfied Is this the same one Simon & Garfunkel did? I've never heard Gary Puckett's version. BTW, I saw Puckett live as part of an oldies show back in about 1996. He sounded great--had a little trouble with some of the higher notes, but for the most part, he still sounded like he did on the original recordings!
