Gotta do this early since I am leaving work early. Why? Because I am going to see MARTINA tonight!!!! YAY!!! You'd know this if anyone checked the concert board!! This is our first live non-Christmas concert, so we are jacked! Check for a report tomorrow on the CONCERT board! Here we go again: Quicksilver Messenger Service-McDornan wanted this band listed. I only know Fresh Air, which is a GREAT tune. I know What About Me & Who Do You Love by title, but never heard them. Band contained David Freidberg, later of Jefferson Starship and John Cipollina, older brother of Mario of Huey Lewis & the News. Fave-Fresh Air. Rare Earth-Love these guys. Love Pete Rivera's voice. They are always listed as the "most successful white act on Motown." WERE there other white acts on Motown?? Just like Charlie Pride is listed as the most successful black country artist. Anyway, I gotta get my hands on the 10 minute version of (I Know) I'm Losing You! Faves-(I Know) I'm Losing You, Get Ready, I Just Want to Celebrate, Born to Wander, Hey Big Brother. Rascals-Went into the Hall as blue-eye soulstirs, deservedly so. But before the Righteous Brothers? Still, I like em, got a greatest hits. Much covered band. Actually heard Angel's cover of I Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Out Anymore first. Faves-A Beautiful Morning, You Better Run, How Can I Be Sure. Raspberries-Ok, I need to pick up a compilation so I can hear more stuff by them! I only know 2 hits, but they both rock! Their name actually sounds bubblegum, surprised it didn't do damage! My dad has 1 or 2 of their other hits, I should listen. Faves-Go All the Way, I Wanna Be With You. Ratt-I like Ratt. I don't know what it is, but they have held up for me over similar bands of the time, including Def Leppard. I know they are laughable now, but I don't care. Took me awhile to realize how much I liked them until I sat down and made a list of songs I like. I like a lot of them! Faves-Giving Yourself Away, Lay it Down, Dance, Round and Round, You're in Love. Otis Redding-Ok, I know the big hit, and at some point have heard Try a Little Tenderness, but that's it! He only had the one song hit the top 20. But it was his influence and potential that got him in the Hall. Another early loss. Fave-(Sittin' on) The Dock of the Bay. And you?

Rascals - I only know It's a Beautiful Morning. Good tune, pleasant sound. I should probably check out more of their stuff.
Otis Redding - Other than Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay, I know nothing. But he's a legend. Gotta respect that.
I know nothing about any of these other acts. Sorry.

Sounds like a red-letter day for you! Enjoy the concert. If you keep promoting her I'm going to have to cave in and give Martina a listen (seriously). Quicksilver Messenger Service : I'm familiar with the name and their influence in the mid 60's roots of psychedelia and the Bay Area sound but I have never heard any songs by them. Drawing a blank. No faves Rare Earth : As my Dad has told me several times, they were THE party band of the early 70's. Powerful and infectious jams. Holy cow does Pete Rivera have some strong lungs! Love 'em...would have liked to have been able to see them in concert in their prime if I'd been older. Favorites = Get Ready, I Just Want to Celebrate, (I Know) I'm Losing You Rascals : R.I.P. Felix Cavaliere. This band was known for their free and easy feelgood music. Nice to listen to. Unfortunately oldies radio overplays the daylights out of the hits. Favorites = Groovin', A Beautiful Morning, How Can I Be Sure Raspberries : I generally like what I've heard from this group. They are underrated and underplayed. Oddly enough I detest every solo record Eric Carmen has put out. He's so dull without the raging guitars. Favorites = Go All the Way Ratt : One of my favorite mid 80's psuedo-metal bands. They simply kicked a$$, no other way to put it. The video for "Round and Round" with Milton Berle was quite funny too. Stephen Searcy led this group, not sure what he or the band members are up to now. A guilty pleasure to some but no guilt here. I love it! Favorites = Round and Round, Lay it Down, Dance, Giving Yourself Away Otis Redding : Extremely talented singer who we lost way too soon. Another member of the Plane Crash Posse, unfortunately. Am I imaging it or didn't he record a version of Aretha Franklin's "Respect" that was awfully good? Favorites = (Sitting On the) Dock of the Bay, Respect???

Got a pretty bad case of Fridayitis (a condition occuring on the final day of the workweek characterized by an unwillingness to concentrate on matters pertaining to revenue generation and general productivity) so a few more thoughts popped into my head. Re: Rare Earth being the most successful "white" act on Motown. The only other one I can think of is Teena Marie. I'm sure there were a handful of others but nobody significant. Back to Ratt. I remember having a concert T-shirt from the "Out of the Cellar" tour that was grey and had a large silk-screen graphic on the front of a very large rat being electrocuted on a mixing board. I wore it to school one day (11th grade year) and was almost immediately sent home by the assistant principal because he deemed my shirt "inappropriate and offensive". And people wonder why I have a negative attitude towards authority figures. Buncha fascists, lol (Sitting On) The Dock of the Bay was number one the day I was born, March 21st, 1968. Okay, darnit, I guess I should go do what they pay me to do here in this corporate dungeon (sigh)

Well, then you better give her a listen, because I ain't gonna shut up about her! All I ask is you get recommendations from me first. My luck you'll end up listening to some song that doesn't showcase her voice! LOL!

Enjoy the concert! Quicksilver! Pretty big ion the late 60s,but faded fast. Cipollina was an amazing guitarist;the group has some wonderful jams like "Who Do You Love" and "GOld and Silver". "Gone Again"- a long and very lovely ballad. "What About Me"- one of the most radical songs of the 60s,along with the Airplane's "We Can Be Together". And "Fresh Air", "The Cobra", "The Hat" "Mona". On fo my fave bands! Rare Earth- like "Get Ready" and "Losing You" a lot, don't like the others. Rascals (or Young Rascals). Of course the classic "Good Lovin"! And "How Can I Be Sure" (sounds like a song in a French cafe), "A Girl LIke You", "It's Wonderful" (touch of pstchedelia), and "Ain't Gonna Eat My Heart Out Anymore". And "Groovin". The soft side of the 60s. Raspberries- only know "Go All the Way", but I love that song. Otis Redding- never liked "Dock of the Bay"- everyone else seems to. But there it is. His performance of "Shake" in the Monterey Pop movie is really great.

Keep a comin'!
Quicksilver Messenger Service--One band I don't think too much about. Likewise, I'm only familiar with "Fresh Air". Have heard of other tunes, but nothing I'm crazy for. Fresh Air's good, but I don't own it.
Rare Earth--Almost a 3-way tie for my today's fave! Probably 2nd place. I have their first album on vinyl, with the 21 minute version of "Get Ready" on one side. And I have a CD of their best, all single versions. Besides RE and Teena, other white acts on Motown include Charlene (Prodigal subsidiary);D, R. Dean Taylor (Rare Earth subsidiary), and a couple others I'm drawing a blank on, but I think they were specifically on Prodigal or Rare Earth. Anyway, a great band indeed! RIP to 2 or 3 members. Faves: Get ready Warm ride (Great disco-ish tune written by the Gibbs) I just want to celebrate (I know) I'm losing you (best version of all) Hey big brother Born to wander Good time Sally We're gonna have a good time And others...
Rascals--My fave today. And no matter what anyone else may say, I LOVE their biggest hits! In fact,I like all their top 40 hits, and then some! Felix died, Boogie? News to me. Anyway, a SUPER voice. Faves: Good lovin' (FOREVER top 500) People got to be free (also top 500) Groovin' How can I be sure (love the accordion) I've been lonely too long A girl like you It's wonderful You better run I ain't gonna eat out my heart anymore Carry me back See A ray of hope Heaven
Raspberries--WOO HOO! Some of the best in-your-face rock directly after the Beatles' breakup. I like Eric's solo stuff a lot too, but this band had LOTS of "substance"! Too bad they had no more than 4 albums. Have their stuff on Eric's compilation CD, so I know nothing beyond the singles. Faves: GO ALL THE WAY!!! WOOOOWEEEEE! (FOREVER top 500!) I wanna be with you (It only gets better every listen, top 5000 in 1987, now it's at least in my top 2000) Let's pretend (Arguably, the best Beatles' influenced ballad ever) Tonight (Crank it!) Overnight sensation (Hit record) I'm a rocker Don't wanna say goodbye
Ratt--Liked them considerably from 1984 till I finished college in 1994. A less nonsensical hard rock sound than Sister or Riot. They simply packed a good punch. Even have the "8191" cassette. Boogie, it's Pearcy, not Searcy. And RIP Robin Crosby (I think he's the one who passed on). Faves: Round and round Way Cool Jr. (played this at least 5 times in college) Lay it down Dance I want a woman You're in love Givin' yourself away Wanted man What's it gonna be
Otis Redding--Much respect, but I listen to him FAR less than most other 60's soul singers. His tragic plane crash also killed 4 of the BarKays' 6 members. Maybe some stuff's a little mellow, but he had talent. Could have had a career well into the 1970's. Faves: (Sittin' on) The dock of the bay Satisfaction Respect Try a little tenderness Happy song (Dum dum) Shake Papa's got a brand new bag Fa fa fa fa fa (Sad song)
Enjoy the concert!

Quicksilver Messenger Service - I only know Fresh Air also. Kept hearing about them in the late '60s, but never investigated. Rare Earth- Great white soul group. I love Get Ready, and I Just Want To Celebrate. FANTASTIC cover of I Know I'm Losing You, but still not the Temps. The only other white Motown singer I remember is (gulp) Charlene. Who (unfortunately) had a hit with I've Never Been To Me. Rascals - One of the top 60s groups. Many great songs. They didn't fall into the "every song sounds the same" trap. Very versatile. Faves: Good Lovin' (Nope! Not tired of it), How Can I Be Sure (sniffin around my all time top 250), Groovin', Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore, I've Been Lonely Too Long, A Girl Like You, Carry Me Back. (Got tired of People got to Be free) Raspberries- Love these guys. Go All The Way is in my all time top 100, also love Let's Pretend, I wanna Be With You. Eric Carmen has one of the top ten male voices of the Rock genre. (Pretty amazing for a little kid from Colorado who wears a ski cap and talks funny.) sorry about thatRatt - Heard of them, don't know their music. Otis Redding- It took his tragic death to get him recognized by the masses. Dock of the Bay is an all time classic. Try a Little Tenderness is very good (although, this one time, I prefer the cover by 3DN) Also liike the Sad Song (Fa Fa Fa) and the Happy Song (Dum Dum), and a couple of others that I can't think of right now.

They opened for Badfinger a few times back in the early 70's - now how cool is that!! Adam you have to pick up a compilation - you'll love it Faves - this is going to be a long one! Go All The Way - one of the best intro's ever Going Nowhere Tonight I'm a Rocker - LOVE Jim's drumming on this - a little bit of Keith Moon's influence on this) If You Change Your Mind Hard To Get Over a Heartbreak Overnight Sensation(Hit Record) Come Around and See Me Let's Pretend Money Down Should I Wait Reach For The Light Drivin' Around Crusin' Music - VERY Beach Boy sounding All Through The Night I Don't Know What I Want Making it Easy Every Way I Can Might as Well It Seemed So Easy Starting Over Tonight Hands On You Last Dance Nobody Knows Ratt - The only tune I know is Round and Round I don't remember hearing anything else Faves - Round and Round Otis Redding - He left us waaaaay to soon . First of all, have fun tonight!
Today's list is pretty good, I own full CD's by all but two.
Quicksilver Messenger Service-I have a compilation that has "Fresh Air", that's all I know. Kinda boring, but they probably did better songs..
Rare Earth-YAAAYYY! AWESOME group! As far as white artists on Motown, there were quite a few, actually, but Rare Earth and R. Dean Taylor were the only ones to have chart success. I think Motown had Chris Clark, a white female singer, in the 60's, and in the 70's & 80's they had Charlene and Teena Marie. Also, Meatloaf, Lesley Gore, and The Four Seasons briefly recorded on Motown subsidiaries in the early 70's, with no success. Also worthy of note is that Motown ALMOST signed The Mynah Birds, a band featuring Neil Young, Rick James, and future members of Steppenwolf! Anyway, back to Rare Earth, I remember the "Get Ready" album from childhood. I have a best of CD, a Two-fer CD of "Get Ready" and "Ecology", as well as two later vinyl albums on the Prodogal label. All great stuff! Fave: WARM RIDE!
Rascals-As far as I know, Felix Cavaliere is alive and well, it's Felix Papalardi of Mountain who has died. Another great 60's band that churned out great song after great song. I have the single disc "Ultimate Rascals", but eventually should check out the Rhino 2 disc set. Faves: Groovin', A Girl Like You, See (maybe it's just me, but this one sounds a little like Three Dog Night), A Ray Of Hope, A Beautiful Morning, It's wonderful, How Can I Be Sure.
Raspberries-I have the Capitol Collectors Series CD. Not sure if it's still in print. Good 70's power pop.
Ratt-I liked them better than Quiet Riot and Twisted Sister. In my 8th grade Metal phase, I bought "Out Of The Cellar" and "Invasion Of Your Privacy" on vinyl. Both are OK albums, the only other song I know by them is "Way Cool jr." (LOVED the video!)
Otis Redding-I have 2 CD's, one is "The Very Best Of", the other is a live at the Whisky A Go-Go CD. Not what I usually listen to, but they were $5 each, and he IS a legend!

As Pete pointed out it was another Felix who passed away a couple of years ago. Mr. Cavaliere is still kickin' it in oldies revival concerts most summers. Oops
