Some more R's!
Helen Reddy-Lightweight country-pop singer of the early 70s. Can't hold a candle to Olivia, but not bad. I pretty much know three songs. I guess I sorta know Angie Baby too. Nice stuff, nothing I go out of my way to listen to. Faves-I Am Woman, Delta Dawn, Ain't No Way to Treat a Lady.
R.E.M.-Sorry, I know they were a big college band for many people in my age range, but Michael Stipe's voice is right up there with the dude from Midnight Oil for most annoying! Having said that, I was exposed to a lot of their music for awhile, so a few songs stand out as being not too bad. Shouldn't be a surprise I like the songs Mike Mills sings lead on (Superman, Shiny Happy People, which would be a runner up below). I actually like the album Green, but the stuff after that is ICK. Faves-Orange Crush, Superman, Fall on Me.
REO Speedwagon-I don't know, but they probably get less respect than even Journey these days. I don't care, I still like em. I remember in 87 when I thought all good music was dead, I bought Big Life by Night Ranger and Life as We Know it by REO, hoping for some salvation. Bad idea. By 88 I moved from top 40 to classic rock. Yes, they made tons of ballads, but let's not forget when they rocked, they rocked HARD. Faves-Keep Pushin', Back on the Road Again (Bruce Hall should have sung more), Like You Do (Live), Keep the Fire Burnin', Roll With the Changes.
Paul Revere & the Raiders-Man, I was sitting on so many good songs on my original 2 LP vinyl collection, that I didn't discover til I got a different 2 disc set! My fave has always been Too Much Talk, but other songs from around that later period are great as well! I like their sound, glad they are getting play on our Timeless rock station. Hey, how about a Hall nomination for first major act to be first on a TV show?? Faves-Too Much Talk, Him or Me-What's it Gonna Be?, Hungry, Don't Take it So Hard, Just Like Me.
Charlie Rich-Only know 2 songs from this country-pop artist. One was a number one 70s hit, the other a classic I first heard from my dad that has been covered many times. Faves-Lonely Weekends, The Most Beautiful Girl in the World.
And you?

Helen Reddy-"Angie Baby" is great! My sister had the "Leave Me Alone" 45. Definately not in Olivia's league.. Anne Murray's, maybe?
R.E.M.-One thing I can pride myself on is that I got my DAD into them! I gave him the "Eponymous" album on vinyl, and he liked it. I liked their early stuff on the I.R.S. label the best. Thought "Green" was so-so, HATED "Out Of Time", and L-O-V-E-D "Automatic For The People"!!
REO Speedwagon-Never did much for me. I liked Styx and Foreigner, but never thought much about "the wagon"...
Paul Revere & The Raiders-I have the 2 disc collection as well. The sound on some of the early cuts isn't that great (they couldn't edit out the "pops" on "Like, Long Hair"??).. The end of the first disc and the first half of the second is the best stuff (all the hits, basically). "Too Much Talk" is a great one, so is "I Had A Dream" and "Birds Of A Feather".
Charlie Rich-My dad, ever the Country fan, had 8-tracks of him. I liked "Behind Closed Doors" and "Most Beautiful Girl"...

Helen Reddy : I can take her or leave her. There's no denying her talent however. Not my cup of tea. Favorites = Delta Dawn, I Am Woman R.E.M. : This band OWNED college radio in the 80's. They hail from Athens, GA which is about an hour from here. Never saw them live for some strange reason. They were much, much better prior to Green. Seems like they sold out and started making more radio-friendly feelgood pop songs. Good thing I like this band because you couldn't attend a party at my alma mater without hearing them. I do have to agree with you though, Michael Stipe's voice IS annoying. Favorites include: Radio Free Europe Fall On Me Rockville (It's The) End of the World As We Know It Orange Crush Crush With Eyeliner Everybody Hurts Losing My Religion (great video..took me nearly 10 years to understand what it was REALLY about) Drive REO Speedwagon : Speaking of annoying voices...how about Kevin Cronin's. Despite that I liked several of their tracks. Faceless arena rock that will forever languish in anomynity. They rocked harder in the 70's. Have one of the coolest album titles of all time: "You Can Tune a Piano But You Can't Tuna Fish" Favorites = Time For Me To Fly, Keep On Loving You, Keep the Fire Burning, Take It On the Run, Don't Let Go, In Your Letter Paul Revere & the Raiders : I guess by now it's become obvious that my weakest area of musical knowledge is mid-60's bands. I don't listen to much oldies radio either so my exposure to Paul Revere & co. is limited. "Indian Reservation" is a winner though! Favorites = Indian Reservation Charlie Rich : Pleasant voice...very smooth like a finely aged scotch. If I must listen to country this is the type that I prefer. Old school, if you will...him, Freddie Fender, Marty Robbins, Johnny Cash, etc. Charlie Rich had some crossover success in the mid 70's and deservedly so. Favorites = The Most Beautiful Girl In the World, Behind Closed Doors

(Can't stand it, BTW! ) Actually, P.Revere & the Raiders were American! And their first chart hit was BEFORE the Invasion! Did Rich do a version of Somebody Done Somebody Wrong? The hit version was BJ Thomas.

This is what happens when you try to cram too much information into a pea-sized brain, hahaha. Anyway, yeah the video was run into the ground by MTV/VH1 and I'm sick to death of it. The song and video deal with Michael Stipe's coming to grips with his bisexuality (or homosexuality, depending upon the source) and his protest of the historical religious persecution of those who deviate from the traditional male-female sexual relationship. I'm neither gay nor religious...I just think too much. Now on to less controversial topics

Helen Reddy - not really much of a fan although we also had the 45 of "Leave Me Alone" in the house. Remember seeing her in the film Airport ' 75. Faves - Leave Me Alone REM - I remember being with a buddy of mine buying albums and he picked up the GREEN album - it had just come out and he was stunned that I had never heard of them - LOL so he would play their stuff whenever I was at his house. Although I don't like everything they've done I have a few faves: Orange Crush , Stand , Fall on Me , The One I Love , All The Right Friends , Man on The Moon , Imitation of Life(sorry Adam , Find The River , Everybody Hurts , Shiny Happy People and Losing My Religion. REO Speedwagon - Yeah I have to agree that they sure don't any respect . My oldest brother had (has) their first couple of albums . So I remember hearing the studio version of Ridin' The Storm Out at a very young age. CRANK IT! - I have the Hits CD Hi -Infidelity on LP and bought the 45's of One Lonely Night and Keep on Loving You when they were released. Faves - Ridin' The Storm Out , Roll With The Changes , Keep The Fire Burnin' , One Lonely Night , Keep On Loving You , Take It On The Run , Can't Fight This Feeling and Time for Me to Fly. Paul Revere & The Raiders - Loved them at an early age - we had the Spirit of '67 LP in the house - my fave of their 60's albums. I have a few LP's 45's The Legend CD and The Essential Ride Collection on disc as well. Faves - Just Like Me, Good Thing , In My Community , Louise , Hungry , Don't Take It So Hard , Frankfort Sidestreet , The Great Airplane Strike , Louie Louie , Him or Me What's it Gonna Be? , I Had a Dream , Too Much Talk , Indian Reservation , Cinderella Sunshine , Mr.Sun , Mr. Moon, Let Me , Powder Blue Mercedes Queen Charlie Rich - The Silver Fox , I only knew him as a country artist until the late 80's when I found out he started out doing rockabilly. Good artist, heard The Most Beautiful Girl alot as a kid. Faves - Lonely Weekend (Yeah!) , The Most Beautiful Girl in The World and Behind Closed Doors

Yay! It's Charlie Rich day. Helen Reddy - Her stuff is soooo dated but still fun to listen to occasionally. She's not that bad an actress, at least the few times she was on Love Boat and Fantasy Island in the early 80s. Faves: I Am Woman, Delta Dawn, Angie Baby REM - I am very hot and cold on this band. On the one hand I've always thought that they were overated and every recording of Shiny Happy People should be destroyed. On the other hand, they've recorded some songs that I think are great. Michael Stipe seems a bit much y'know? Faves: Radio Free Europe, Strange Currencies, One I Love, Daysleeper REO Speedwagon - I kind of have a weakness for their songs. I hate to admit it but whenever I hear an REO track I can't help but sing a long. Especially Roll With The Changes. Their VH-1 BTM was actually really fascinating. Kevin Cronin looks great for his age by the way! Anyway, my faves: Roll With The Changes, Take It On The Run, Time For Me To Fly Paul Revere & The Raiders - I never remember which songs they recorded. I always get them mixed up with other bands from the era. Anyway I guess I like Don't Take It So Hard and Just Like Me Charlie Rich - I'm so glad you listed him, I was afraid that you wouldn't. My grandmother was his #1 fan and for the longest time I denied my love of his music. Then about 5 years ago I was on a road trip with my boyfriend and best friend and we bought a greatest hits cassette at a rest stop as a joke for 99 cents! The joke was on us though because the 3 of us found ourselves loving his songs and singing them at the top of our lungs for the rest of the trip. I've been an unashamed fan ever since. Faves: Most Beautiful Girl, Behind Closed Doors, Very Special Love Song, There's Another Place I Can't Go, Lonely Weekend, Who Will The Next Fool Be If you like Elvis then give Charlie Rich a chance - he had better sideburns!

Helen Reddy - I very seldom hear her songs on the radio, which is a shame, because she recorded some really good songs back in the 70's. Lots of memories associated with her music. Favorites: Leave Me Alone (Ruby Red Dress), Angie Baby, I Am Woman, Delta Dawn, You and Me Against the World, Ain't No Way to Treat a Lady, Keep on Singing, Peaceful.
R.E.M. - I never really got into them in a big way, but some of their songs were pretty good. Favorite: The One I Love.
REO Speedwagon - One of my favorite arena bands. I loved the songs from Hi Infidelity, and when I heard some of their earlier material a few years later, I was really impressed! 'Ridin' the Storm Out' is one of my very favorite songs of all time - I love cranking up that rockin' live version! Other favorites: Keep on Loving You, Take It On the Run, In Your Letter, Don't Let Him Go, Time for Me to Fly.
Paul Revere & the Raiders - Another group I really enjoy. I saw them in concert back in July 1990, and they put on a great show! Not long after that, I got the Legend of Paul Revere compilation, and loved it. I wish the oldies stations played more of their lesser-known songs. Favorites: Love Music (another all-time favorite!), Kicks, Hungry, Just Like Me, It's Happening, Good Thing, Let Me, Him or Me - What's It Gonna Be?, Indian Reservation.
Charlie Rich - My parents had several albums of his, so I heard a lot of his music when I was growing up. Wonderful vocalist, and a very talented piano player as well. Favorites: Rollin' With the Flow, Behind Closed Doors, The Most Beautiful Girl, A Very Special Love Song, I Love My Friend, Every Time You Touch Me.

Let's see...
Helen Reddy--Nice, pleasant singer. Hardly ever considered her country, but she was big on easier AM stations in the 70's. Have her "Hits" album on vinyl. A fine actress in "Pete's Dragon", too. Faves: I am woman Angie baby Leave me alone (Ruby red dress) You and me against the world (I almost cry when I hear this--it almost sound like my own mom and myself back in the 70's!) Ain't no way to treat a lady Delta dawn Keep on singing Peaceful I don't know how to love him Candle on the water Emotion You're my world
R.E.M.--I like a few songs, but I'm not with most of the Click here--LOVE "Out of time", DETEST "Automatic" with a PASSION! WAY too acoustic! Plus some good earlier ones too. Not surprisingly, played them a lot in college. Faves: Shiny happy people (Great co-vocal by Kate Pierson!) Losing my religion Stand The one I love It's the end of the world as we know it Radio song (VERY overlooked) Fall on me What's the Frequency Kenneth Orange crush Radio free Europe Pop song '89 E-bow the letter Can't get there from here Rockville Driver 8 Just a touch Half a world away so. central rain Finest worksong Belong How I had "Drive" hit #6 on my personal lists seems unbelievable to me.
REO Speedwagon--Yeah! My fave today, just beating out Paul Revere. One of the 80's best rock bands, bar NONE--always love playing "Infidelity" and "Wheels..."!. Enjoy their earlier stuff as well--Gary Richrath is truly one of the unsung guitar heroes ever! Also love Neal Doughty's KILLER organ on some tunes! Except for "In my dreams", an absolute solid winner! Faves: (Long list!) Keep on loving you (eternally in my top 1000) Keep the fire burnin' (have this on 2 various artists compilations-how did this get left off their "Hits" album?) Take it on the run One lonely night Can't fight this feeling (Even though it was 1985's most overplayed song) Live every moment In your letter Tough guys (I'm sorry, Spanky) That ain't love (Their only GREAT post 1985 song) Roll with the changes (If released in 1981-85 instead of 1978, this would have DEFINITELY hit top 40) I do'wanna know Don't let him go Ridin' the storm out (both studio and live versions) Keep pushin' Gotta feel more Shakin' it loose Sweet time Only the strong survive Here with me Time for me to fly (above 2 are virtually identical) Wheels are turnin' Reelin' Back on the road again Follow my heart Live it up Rock 'n roll star Little queenie Variety tonight (They jumped the shark when this failed to hit top 40) Our time is gonna come I don't want to lose you Out of season Love is a rock Flying turkey trot Break his spell Lightning Like you do Thru the window Son of a poor man Good trouble Summer love Unidentified tuna trot Breakaway Lost in a dream Someone tonight (the only one from Infidelity I usually don't play) Say you love me or say goodnight Let's be-bop Music man Golden country 157 Riverside avenue Enough? ;D
Paul Revere & the Raiders--Boy, did they ROCK in the 60's! Indeed, more of their hits should be played on radio, but I can play them on my computer anyway! At least it's their lesser known earlier tunes I copied. Don't know their 1968-1972 hits a bunch, save a few. And I saw them live around 1996, they've got it still! Faves: Kicks Just like me Hungry (1966 was their year!) Indian reservation Steppin' out Him or me... Good thing Louie Louie Ups and downs Mr. Sun, Mr. Moon Action Too much talk Louie go home Don't take it so hard The great airplane strike (strange intro) Peace of mind Birds of a feather We gotta all get together Let me (This is cacophony vs. their other catchy hit tunes)
Charlie Rich--While I like most older country artists, this is not a fave of mine. Too much like a straight, ungimmicky singer like Roger Whittaker. You could have done Jim Reeves instead! ;D I do like his 2 earliest hits though. Faves: Mohair Sam (almost sounds like Chubby Checker with a twang!) Lonely weekends The most beautiful girl (passable, but clearly in my top 25 least liked #1's from 1940-1999)

Red Hot Chili Peppers? Lou Reed? Helen Reddy--She had some pretty good songs, now that I think about it. I'd like to get a Greatest Hits CD sometime. R.E.M.--A favorite of mine. There's just something about Michael Stipe that I find appealing. Don't know why. I enjoy the group as a whole, too. Faves: Orange Crush, Radio Free Europe, End of the World, So. Central Rain THe One I Love, Daysleeper, Everybody Hurts (LOVE it), Bang and Blame, Man on the Moon, Stand, Shiny Happy People, Get Up, and on and on... REO--Love 'em. Saw them a few times in the '80's, and the last time in 2002. They still put on a great show. They were in concert here last night with Journey and Styx. Wish I woulda had tickets. Faves: Here With Me (Love it), Time for Me to Fly, Roll with the Changes, In Your Letter, Someone Tonight, Keep Pushin', Take it on the Run, Keep On Loving You, Don't Let Go, Shakin' it Loose, Ridin' the Storm Out, Golden Country (LOVE it), Out of Season, more... Paul Revere/Raiders--I'm not sure I know a whole lot of songs by them. The ones I do know I like very much. I'll have to check them out a little more thoroughly some day. Faves: Indian Reservation, Birds of a Feather, Hungry, Kicks, Just Like Me Charlie Rich--Don't much care about him one way or the other. He had some ok songs I suppose, but he's nobody I'd seek out. BTW--I was watching a documentary about John Denver not too long ago--sometime back in the 70's, John was up for a music award--Best Male Country Artist (not sure if it was the CMA's, or what). They showed the clip of Charlie Rich reading the nominees, and when he opened the envelope, and saw that John was the winner, he took out his lighter and set the card on fire. He obviously didn't agree that John should have won the award. LOL! John wasn't at the Awards show, but he was live via satellite from wherever he was, and he had no clue that Charlie Rich did that. John went on to thank "his friend" Charlie for presenting the award to him. Yeah, right.
